In this context an observational study, though it would likely not be called that, might refer to recording details and reflections after the event. See, for example, writings on autoethnography.

they are: time, position, partner, ambient, speed, frequency... am I missing any?

6 weeks ago, I was drunk out of my mind in the Berlin tram at about 12:30 AM on a weekday. I had went straight to the bar from university, so I had a lab coat in my bag. There were about 10 other people in the tram. With a stupid grin on my face, I put on my lab coat and just sat there for 10 minutes in the coat. Then I got out of the tram and walked through the centre of Berlin to my apartment, still with that stupid lab coat on. A police car passed me and I was kind of anxious about that, but luckily they didn't really care. I got into the lift at my apartment complex and this girl about my age comes in and says hi (I'm still in the lab coat). I am completely silent and keep a straight face as the lift takes me up to the right floor and then get out.

It perhaps involves two things: forethought (to avoid doing things you might subsequently regret) and self-reflection (from which you can resolve to learn from what has happened and to move on, rather than to dwell on it and indulge in self-pitying feelings of regret).

no amount of forethought can avoid every mistake, and no amount of self-reflection can erase that bitter feeling of "i could have done it better."
The mind goes to strange and sad places sometimes. takes a lot of self discipline to entirely avoid dwelling in regret. but maybe that is something you get as you age, you just have to distribute your experience points right. hmmm.
but I agree that those are great ways of reducing the time spent regretting.
