They know the truth. All the orcs, the goblins, the kobolds and draconians and merfolk and ogres and nagas, they know it's all a fake. They all know it's a fake, and they seek a release. They seek an end in the only way the cruel laws of the dungeon will allow -- on the weapons and wizardry of outsiders.

Re: Odd things sighted in dungeon.

So the entire dungeon doesn't really exist, the monsters are aware of this, but the player isn't. Presumably winning- the ending of the game- is also the end of the illusion. Or, in reverse, the dream world that is the dungeon only exist so long as the player is kept from accomplishing his or her victory condition.

Congrats, guys. We just proved that the Orb of Zot is the Wind Fish's Egg.

You should have eaten it and seen what happened.

If you overeat the food now gets sent to the Abyss. Excellent weight control strategy.

I was once in a hurry and ate the Glaive of Prunes. Now that was a stomach ache.

I've heard the Glaive of Prunes can do wonders for the ageing warrior's digestion.

However the fact that the Abyss is a gigantic toilet is news to me. Startling news.

Not a toilet, merely a repository of lost things and wayward souls. Though if you find yourself there you may well conclude that you have been emmerded, to misuse a French term.

Do you know anything about a man going around playing a harmonica? He’s someone you’d remember. Instead of talking, he plays. And when he better play, he talks.

It's just graphical abyss wackiness though. Doesn't give you sanctuary to stand in.

I like that vault, it creates a scary but survivable situation very quickly.

Have you been wondering what a regular room grid level looks like after three boring beetles have had free rein for a couple thousand turns? You can stop now:

Two ghosts, side by side, in Lair.

I've only ever encountered ghosts singly before. They were probably just hanging out having a picnic and waiting for me to come along so they could kick my ass; which they did.

Past a certain depth, the one-ghost-per-level restriction is lifted.

Single ghosts only in D:2-8, Lair:1, Orc:1 and non-dungeon areas at these depths (i.e. portal vaults) I don't think ghosts are allowed on D:1. There's a limit of 10 ghosts per level below that.

Since when? Thought the rule was you could pretty much annihilate Sonja by confusing her into unwielding her dagger.

It's a entrance vault with a whole bunch of different monsters which you find in Zot behind glass. Perfectly harmless and good xp for later if you find airstrike.

Not anymore. Smite targeting no longer works through glass walls (definitely in 0.11 trunk, and maybe since 0.10).

That just made me wonder how your character always knows what's at the bottom of a branch stair just by looking at the staircase. I'm picturing signs like you see at the gates to theme park rides...and then you realize that the stair mimics are taking the trouble to duplicate these.
