If it doesn't fit anywhere else, it belongs here. Also, come here if you just need to get hammered.

This would be a hilarious idea for a vault though.

D:1 orb mimic vault, but one in ten thousand times, it's actually the Orb.

Even better if it happens right by the stairs in with all the runes lying next too it.
It will be fun to have a thirty rune, two orb ascension.

It looks cool and there for the entire dungeon should consist of things like that.

In my current game, the staircase for the Hall of Blades was a stair mimic. It definitely caught me by surprise, but then again mimics are pretty wimpy.

You mean to say there was a dancing staircase leading to the room of dancing weapons?

This image is of interest to those curious about what's really going on with the dungeon. What is the Orb of Zot and why is it so important? What is the player actually doing? Every once in a while, just after you come down stairs, you'll get a glimpse behind the curtain:

Image

Only monsters, no floor or walls. The dungeon is fake. It appears that monsters sleep suspended in a void until you arrive, then the "dungeon" is quickly generated and the monsters provoked to attack you immediately. The whole thing's a setup.

Lava and Ice Cave are neighbors! They've quelled their differences and decided to get along! :) Never would have expected.

Sadly this means I'm only allowed to pick one, and the other will vanish. Hilariously I have Ring of Fire Res AND Ring of Cold Res on when I encountered this, so that does absolutely nothing to weight my decision in one direction. Which one should I pick?

Oh, and check it out, the swamp is also neighbors to the lava and ice caves. It's like the dungeon itself is giving itself a group hug! Yaaay~

You might be able to do both. I managed a Labyrinth and Ice Cave on one level once.

I'm guessing the Volcano would be faster so I'd pick that.

I did so, as per your advice.

The Ice Cave closed by the time I finished, sure enough. But, I got two Flaming Ankuses, a +2 Animal Skin of Fire Resistance, and a couple of other nice goodies, as well as killing several Lava Fish and racking up nice Exp! I think I'm fine with that much. :)

This would be the first Volcano I've ever beaten! But I have one question. What does it mean when "the air gets thick with sulphur" and "you hear the volcano erupt in the distance"? I didn't notice any changes...

The sulphur message means that the lava in certain areas of the volcano is about to send out huge gouts of flame, potentially hitting you. The erupt message means it's happening now. If you're not in an eruption area of the volcano you won't see anything.

Re: Odd things sighted in dungeon.

That Kraken opening was an extremely blatant sign of things to come, by the way. I'm currently XL 11 and am getting CHASED BY EVERYTHING EVER. Including an Anaconda due to a Hydra polymorph gone bad, and an Eye of Devestation due to another on a Hill Giant. (I beat them both, though, and for the Anaconda I used two Scrolls of Summoning back to back to fend off my own Ghost, and a Steam Dragon and fight the Anaconda at the same time. It was a fight that made the Spartans nod and grin in approval.) I mean I know this kind of craziness isn't unusual for Crawl, this one's just one of those games. I wish a freaking Spellbook would turn up soon though; they're all hiding in the Lair probably but the Lair is infested with Electric Eels and I'm scarrrrrred D:

Of course, that was part of the point :) A kraken obliterating a group of player monsters is a much better memento mori than a boring old skull, I think.

Dude, you rock at level design and you get an A+ in Theory of Crawl. :D Make even more for us, I'm almost begging!

Most of my recent vaults haven't been so horrific as the Kraken Death Aquarium, though there's a couple of Spider's Nest ones that might turn up in this thread.

I hope you'll never do stuff like that little vault were a centaur is hidding behind a bush. I totally hate that one :)

I think this... counts as an "odd thing".

Holy motherf*cking sh*t. Was my nonstop reaction as I trudged through this ludicrously awesome dungeon. Whoever designed this place is a genius and this is my all-time favorite thing I have ever discovered in Crawl, and always will be. Props.

The boss killed me big-time, too. Five hits of Constriction and I was out of Blink scrolls. Swift Game Over. I had him down to thiiiiiiiiiiiiiiis much HP, but ran out of Mana and just couldn't keep kiting it with Haste long enough.

Just, wow. I love this game so much. Even when it's evil.

(Man, I feel so inspired now and want to try my hand at this level designing thing some time, but I haven't even scored one win yet so maybe I'm not qualified the way "pros" here are... x.x ehhh)

(Also, perhaps I'm a freak, but this is totally a place I would love to live if it were real. Minus the killing and suffering. ^^ The embrace of pulsating warm flesh and the sound and vibrations of a beating heart all around me, see, it's a very soothing image for me. I imagine it would feel like a womb. Or the inside of a Zerg Hatchery. Peaceful.)

Don't forget the screams of the tortured things.
What made you happy today?

I've never gotten a rune, or even been to a Wizlab, so you don't need to be a pro to make vaults. It helps to have a little bit of programming experience, but other than that all you need is some free time and the inclination to make levels. That, and a text editor with a monowidth font.

*Keanu voice* Whoa.

Just realized there's another piece of evidence proving it's a fake: The monsters don't fight to their full capacity. They wander straight into your guns like zombies, or robots.

It's like we're trapped inside some sort of game, man. One that's being played for someone else's amusement.
