tbh even if your FeWm had one of those totally not melee "level 0 spell" attacks, you probably wouldn't want to use them on anything that exists in Zot except maybe for weaker dragons because you had barely over a hundred HP and no AC at all

You're right about that. Once again, the sole reason I brought up the FeWn was to show how difficult things can be without melee, to refute duvessa's assertion that mages shouldn't train melee. Level 0 spells would not make the FeWn's life easier.

I think it's more like "things can get difficult if you have 100 HP and 36 AC as your only defences", except well, it's a cat so it has excellent stealth and good movespeed, so it's more like "things can get tedious" in the end. I guess what I'm saying is that this probably isn't the best example?

Well, that's a fair point, but still, mages should generally train some melee.

1. Most casters already start with an offensive spell memorized (flame tongue, throw frost, magic dart, beastly appendages, etc..), so making cantrips is pointless redundancy.
2. "Flame Strike" is a 5th circle cleric spell. You have to be level 9 to cast it (7 if you are druid). Thats obviously not a 0th level spell.

Those spells cost 1 mp to cast, rather than 0 mp, and also don't scale throughout the game like UC does, so it's not really redundant, although the level 0 would have to start pretty weak for the level 1 spells to be worth using ever.
