Ragequit much?

Ragequit much?

So I was merrily going along a few games ago with a SpBe and got to a point where quaff-ID'ing potions would be wise.

I draw mutation. It happens.

I get berserkitis (or as I call it, 'roid rage).

Normally this isn't a huge problem for a Be, as all it does is take away some control of when you go berserk. But for an herbivore, it sucks big time.

I slogged on for a few more levels, going crazy with darts and stones and needles (no sling had been generated in the first 10 levels), and found myself out of permafood, running out of ammo, and few prospects for getting more of either quickly.

I quit the game.

As I was rolling a new character it occurred to me that I don't ragequit often. Usually I take a bad draw from the RNG as an opportunity to figure out how to survive under lousy conditions. The few exceptions for me are:

1) Early cursed weapon on melee characters. Never mind that as of 0.7 you can get some cursed weapons that aren't all bad (I've gotten a +1, +1 cursed weapon before). I don't wield-test blunt weapons at all until I have some scrolls, but even an ordinary -1,+0 cursed blade can put a bad dent in early game survivability.

2) Truly horrid roll on a mutation potion, after I've tried all my other un-ID'ed potions. (See the lead-in.)

And that's really about it for me. Others?

Re: Ragequit much?

Notable only once.
Played Orc Hunter untill XL 12 or so when my ammo ended. Without bowa he sucked ass so I just went to exit of a dungeon. More like a "calmquit" but it still was very dissapointing.
One of the reasons why I play hunters not very often - not much ammo without Trog or Okawaru to find. I think we need a good hunter God concept so that ammo would not be a problem.

Re: Ragequit much?

Last time I got berserkitis on a SpBe, I dragged him all the way to Zot before getting him killed. :)
Wore stasis almost the whole way, after the initial 'zerk and starve bit. Never found clarity, or a cure mutation.

I don't tend to quit. If I get a character I'm bored with, I just play sloppier and sloppier until I die. Rage quit for me is more when my rage forces me to stop playing for a while after the game kills me. :p

Re: Ragequit much?

Nope. Though I understand the impulse, for sure.

A couple of Earth Elementalists ago, I got a cursed dagger on DL1 as my first butchering tool. And low-level EEs need their hands a lot!

Managed to make it to XL5 or so, trying every scroll I found, but eventually got behind the power curve and died with that damn dagger still stuck to my hand.
I am sure I played flawflessly. This was an utmost unfair death. -- gorbeh

Re: Ragequit much?

I don't ragequit (nothing in crawl really makes me mad) but if I find I don't like a character I have, I'll definitely quit. This usually is because I get bored, which pretty much makes the game unwinnable for me anyway.

I agree with the calmquit.

If my Tm's chunkin' dagger or knife is cursed, i head for the exit.

Re: Ragequit much?

I would, but the only time I want to rage quit is when I die (mainly frequent, early deaths that will not let my characters get off the ground). So, it wouldn't do any good.
The best strategy most frequently overlooked by new players for surviving: not starting a fight to begin with.

Re: Ragequit much?

Yes, I suppose "ragequit" is the wrong term, even for me -- I don't get mad at roguelikes, I just sigh and roll another character. The game that prompted this was definitely a case of raging character, resigned player.

Re: Ragequit much?

yeah, bad mutation lottery ticket makes me quit a character (or suicide by reckless behaviour). I once abandoned a midgame conjurer after getting double deterioration from a mutation potion and no sustain abilities. I just didn't want to bother with Str reduced to crap.

I prefer to join Xom rather than abandon characters or play sloppy. Fundie > ragequit.

Re: Ragequit much?

It's not suicide, just making a boring character interesting.

I mean, I've never won this game. Every character is suicide.
