If that's all true, and much of it is true from what I've seen, am seeing, and will see, I'm glad I'm just north of the 45th, rather than south.

I'd do a little more fact checking if I were you. That piece contains some howlers, such as the assertion that Reagan met with the Taliban ten years before the Taliban came into existence.

Perfectly correct, but weren't they the Mujahedin who later became the Taliban? Regardless, the point made was that yesterdays friend is suddenly todays enemy, and the public's memory is so short and easily led by the media that they don't tend to notice.

It's always wise to read everything with a critical eye, good catch Grimm.

Ninjorp wrote:Perfectly correct, but weren't they the Mujahedin who later became the Taliban?

If you're asking, as your grammar connotes, whether the specific mujahideen in that photo later became Taliban, I don't know. But if you're suggesting that the mujahideen in general later became the Taliban, the answer is No, that's a dreadful oversimplification. Some did, some didn't. It's roughly analogous to saying "Didn't the American Revolutionaries later become Confederates?"

Regardless, the point made was that yesterdays friend is suddenly todays enemy, and the public's memory is so short and easily led by the media that they don't tend to notice.

I don't mean to be rude but it's a bit rich for you to refer to the public's poor understanding when you yourself aren't quite sure of the difference between the mujahideen and the Taliban, and seem unaware of the larger context of the Afghan situation, preferring instead the, I'm sorry but sweetly naïve American notion that a group of "friends" suddenly, mysteriously - mirabile dictu - became "enemies" while we weren't looking. And after all we did for them!

I agree that the author was trying to make the point that people should pay much closer attention to what their governments are doing. This is a worthy sentiment. But the fact that not a single one of his commenters, busy posting their ΜΟΛΩΝ ΛΑΒΕ .jpgs, caught the Taliban goof, and the fact that to a man they are overfull with praise for a blog posting which is itself as chockablock with clumsy distortions, leaps and lacunae of logic, and crass emotional manipulativeness as any of the campaigns of Bernays and Big Brother which it purports to expose, tells me that that crowd is not one that will be paying the requisite attention.

I feel I have already said too much because the last thing I want is to have political discussions anywhere in the Tavern. If it turns out this posting sets off an exchange, I will delete it and everything that follows.

Re: I think I found something worth checking out today.

If I may throw in my opinion on this article, pathos works. Not everything has to be true, and much propaganda certainly isn't true, but that doesn't make it any less effective. While the article makes gaffs, it certainly has a worthy sentiment. Of course when it gets out of hand you have "Big Brother" distorting facts about how "evil" "Big Sister" is, and "Big Sister" distorting facts about how "evil" "Big Brother" is until no one can tell what's true, as was happening to a certain extent in this article.
In any case, it's good to read with a critical eye, and since I was tired and not paying full attention to the article, some things may have crept by. Anyways, off to bed.

No it doesn't. The sentiment of the article as a whole is "Everyone else but you and I is blind and stupid and doomed." This is a bad, i.e. fruitless, thought.

Re: I think I found something worth checking out today.

This time, I made something worth checking out. =)

While I was ill (from the last Friday before New Year until, hm, the fourteenth of January), I made a set of blank-and-white cards for a little dice game called "Weilong".
It is something akin to Pirate Poker (Yahtzee), but with more simplified rules and with special tasks and abilities for each player (designated by the cards).

The cards are black-and-white, and printer-friendly (I designed them to be printed at home without any special equipment).

Here are my cards -- printed on Whatman paper, scribbled over with a marker, and laminated:

They have seen the play when I got better. Do check out the session review, please. =)

Interesting take - I always presumed she was referring to Crawl but perhaps she is, indeed, referring to life.
