Is it just me or is Crawl wiki offline

If it doesn't fit anywhere else, it belongs here. Also, come here if you just need to get hammered.

Is it just me or is Crawl wiki offline

Is it just me or has the crawl wiki been taken offline (looks like suspended for some reason).

I know it's not perfect ... but it's useful for some things, like reminding me of min delay values etc.

So it's hosted by BlueHost, not some decades-old broken down laptop plugged in under a table stealing Starbucks wifi. Unless they're the same thing...

Likely they see it as a way of putting their name behind their post or something. Like perhaps in this case 'acknowledgement' that he noted something of merit.

I talked to Kornel (who hosts the wiki) and he said the host shut down the site because of performance issues. Kornel said he might only be able to upgrade and host the wiki on his dedicated server in January.

It's us "older folks" that just can't get used to not putting our name at the end of a letter / email / forum post. I consider it "retro" :D

Re: Is it just me or is Crawl wiki offline

Heh. I guess me not posting anything for a month was a good idea.

I have removed the overtly long message text: pardon me for overusing the counter-example.

And, just in case that was the final straw for somebody: this forum has an integrated friend-and-foe system with post notification and removal system for the corresponding groups. Basically, if you add me to your foe list, you can easily ignore my messages -- though I try to do my best for you to not make such a step.

I would like to apologize for me going over the top with ridiculous in respond to Grimm going over the top with what I,personally, have considered too uninteresting without thinking about the possible difficulties for the uninvolved.
Responding with chaos to order sometimes, indeed, is harmful and irritating, and I am glad the harm I did is somewhat easy to revert, which I have just done.
However, please keep in mind that iterating over the same jokes is lethal to them: mental food, just as the physical one, is much tastier in variety.

I will also not hide that fact that I have been under some stress during the past weeks, and that might have influenced me going berserk because a man decided to wear a polka-dot tie, which (me going berserk), certainly, is not something a truly wise and intelligent man would do.
Again, I would like to apologize to you, dear fellow forum members.

No seriously though (sort of), is the wiki really that bad? I try to avoid strategy advice but I sort of like knowing the mechanics.

I avoid strategy advice because I want to figure it out, not because of any judgement of the qulity of the advice.

The problem with the wiki is that as versions change it gets out of date, and needs to be updated. Anything in there may not apply to your game and as such you should take everything with a grain of salt and try testing the information first.

Eh, the real problem with the wiki is that it's locked down and harder to edit than the knowledge bot is. I understand why it's locked down but that is already a "big" hurdle to get over before anyone edits anything. Then when some of the better players go over and edit articles to correct misinformation (cf. cerebovsquire/Elynae), they are reprimanded by other users and have their changes reverted.

My overuse of the Soviet Russia joke is itself the joke. Beating a joke to death has an irony-flavoured comedy parfum all its own, a scent made sweeter by someone (i.e. you) expressing irritation at it. The best way to make Soviet Russia jokes stop is not to respond to them. Then, as in Soviet Russia, Soviet Russia jokes will not respond to YOU!

I will also not hide that fact that I have been under some stress during the past weeks, and that might have influenced me going berserk because a man decided to wear a polka-dot tie, which (me going berserk), certainly, is not something a truly wise and intelligent man would do.

I apologize if I've added any stress to your life. Please consider this forum, and CYC especially, as a home away from home. You might consider having a special .sig to indicate when your feelings are tender so that we can avoid ragging you.

thejasper, I recommend the Tavern over the wiki. It has better advice, plus jokes.

The old wiki is back up, and we will be moving articles to a new upgraded wiki. In the meantime, you can access the old wiki at http://old-crawl.chaosforge.org, user: old_crawl, password: dungeon.

I agree that manual registration is a big hurdle to get over. We finally might be going somewhere with fixing this, now that Kornel has got around to making changes. Kornel has promised that in January he will install some spam protection which would allow us to enable auto registration again.

As for being reprimanded for correcting misinformation, I would like to clarify some things: First, if these corrections occur on a factual article, they will stick. There's no reason not to keep corrected misinformation. If something does gets unjustly reverted, I will personally make sure that the right information gets on the article, in addition to asking on IRC or on the forums for input if there is a real debate on the matter. Typically, however, very few reverts ever happen.

Second, the cerebovsquire/MuWz guide fiasco was an anomaly in that the whole previous MuWz guide was deleted and replaced with Elynae's. What happened next was that an editor reverted that edit, and Elynae's guide was moved to another location. In the end both guides were allowed to exist. Sure, Elynae's guide is much better than the old one, and the old guide might very well merit deletion (it may likely be 'accidentally forgotten' in the migration to the new wiki). But at that time, the old guide did not merit wanton deletion and replacement without some discussion on whether it could be improved or not.

Finally, the particular editor who was overly hostile to Elynae no longer edits the wiki. I hope that I can improve the reputation of the wiki and not let a few bad apples spoil the whole thing.

Does anyone know how the mantis tracker login system works and if it is possible to link that with editing the crawl wiki? Who might I be able to talk to about this?
