ADOM Crowdfunding

If it doesn't fit anywhere else, it belongs here. Also, come here if you just need to get hammered.

ADOM Crowdfunding

I wasn't quite sure where to put this on the The Tavern, and if this doesn't belong here or violates the rules just let me know and I'll take it down.

Anyone who knows roguelikes knows ADOM. In fact, it was my first roguelike, and while playing newer ones (and especially DCSS) has made clear that it's a flawed game, it's one that I think has resonated with a lot of people (and regardless of what you might think of its creator).

Thomas Biskup is trying to crowdsource further work on the game. I feel a bit torn about it, but I figure there's no harm in spreading the word throughout the community. Of course, if you're opposed to TB, crowdfunding, or the role of money in roguelike development, I don't think that's an unreasonable position.

But yeah, it would be nice to see ADOM get the polish it needs..

Unfortunately that's a stretch goal, which I believe means if he radically surpasses his goal he might consider it, but I think TB won't be releasing that code unless someone rolls up to his house with a dumptruck full of money.

Considering he said on reddit that if someone were to give him 500K for the source, he wouldn't give it, I wouldn't count on it even if someone did roll up to his house with a dumptruck full of money. There are many ways for him to turn ADOM into a community driven project that don't require him fully opening up the source. The fact that he hasn't pursued any of them (retaining the copyright and requiring any devs to sign NDAs comes immediately to mind) should indicate the likelihood of this ever happening.

On the topic of funding: I've often wondered who pays for Crawl. Presuming that hosting, etc., cost money - how is that paid for?

But mostly Zin. I mean, what did you think he was doing with all that gold he takes from followers?
The best strategy most frequently overlooked by new players for surviving: not starting a fight to begin with.

The ADOM campaign has reached it's goal of 48 K! And still counting. Pretty amazing.

I'm glad to hear that. ADOM's the only RL without tiles I've ever gotten into. It's an impressive world, and I'd like to see it really get polished.

This thing just broke $65,000. I don't get it.

All volunteer work, but product placement and targeted ads are going to be included in version .27. And commercialbots for ##crawl.
