varsovie - based on that feedback, seeing how it is identical to what I said when I posted Meat Boy (late), it might be a good idea to rename this thread to "Win a Humble Bundle".

Re: Humble bundle to give

The reason why I do a little contest, it's only because I don't like the "first arrived get lucky" idea.

Anyway tanks both of contestants. The winner is... XuaXua, because both is suggestion were formidably well detailed. The humble bundle link is send by MP. ;)

Thank you (again!). I'm thinking a rename to "Humble Bundle Crawl Design Challenges" or something might draw more attention (and additional competition!) to the thread, especially since it's in Crazy Yiuf's Corner. :)

I like the incentive for designing.

Guys, I have a gift code for Humble Bundle for Android 2 (without the "donate more" game)!

Draw a nice Dungeon Crawl-related picture, and you will get the code!
If you find any mistakes or typos in my post, feel free to PM me about it. Thanks in advance!

What's the due date, or is it the first image submitter automatically wins?

You've asked for art, which limits by creativity, time and technical resources.

Prior contests have requested ideas and concepts, which are text that anyone can do.

I can describe what I'd draw, but I don't have the talent to draw it properly.

(shudders)

Okay-okay...

Here.
Execute a six-element combo attack with a successful kill in the game and attach the screenshot(s) and the savefile just after the successful combo. You can use more than six elements. Remember to name them!
The most interesting combo attack wins!

A combo attack? What is a combo attack?

Rather than a simple combination of attacks (a regular combo in a game), a combo attack is a combination of elements used to achieve the target.
Remember that the simple "FIRE STORM OOD FIRE STORM OOD FIRE STORM OOD" does not count as a combo: there must be as few direct-damage "links" as possible!

Direct-damage links are:
  • Summoning spells except Summon Butterflies;
  • raising-the-dead spells or spells that grant you an ally, like Tukima's Dance, and abilities/invocations that summon allies for you (except Enslavement and high-power Crusade card effect!);
  • Conjurations that deal direct damage, and also melee and ranged attacks, that are directed right at the enemy or include him in the area of effect. If you deliberately attack an allied/neutral creature and the explosion caused by the attack/conjuration itself (Fireball, exploding dart, Draconian breath) does not catches the targeted enemy, it is not a direct-damage link.

Only active abilities are counted towards the combo! This means that quirks that do not require activation like support given by Vehumet or walk-through-plants abilities given by Fedhas Madash cannot be counted towards the combo attack. They simply make it easier.
__

A few examples of "combo attacks":

MyOtheHedgeFox wrote:An example of a traditional combo is Imps + Mephitic Cloud; another good combo is Petrify + Rapid Deconstruction (Shatterflesh) or Petrify + Inner Flame + Rapid Deconstruction.
Imps + Meph. Cloud == dam+dam 2-element combo attack (Meph. Cloud deals minor damage!);
Petrify + LRD == 1dam 2-element combo attack;
Petrify + Inner Flame + LRD == 1-dam 3-element combo attack

__

MyOtheHedgeFox wrote:Polymorph an armed enemy, make him move away from his items, pick up his weapon and make it Dance.
Polymorph Other + Tukima's Dance == 1-dam 2-element combo attack;
__

mageykun wrote:Passwall, Dig, Ash and stabbing make for an unbelievably awesome combination.
Scrying + Passwall/Dig + Stabbing == 1-dam 3-element combo attack
__

mageykun wrote:

The purple draconian knight casts a spell and a mottled draconian corpse floats close.
The purple draconian knight picks up the mottled draconian corpse and starts butchering it.
[...]
The purple draconian knight is severely wounded.
The purple draconian knight mumbles some strange words.
The purple draconian knight holds a chunk of flesh high, and a cloud of icy vapour forms.
The vapour coalesces into ice likenesses of mottled draconians.
Apportation + Simulacrum == 1-dam 2-element combo attack

Can you execute a six-step combo attack with using as few means of dealing damage directly as possible?

Probably not.

edit I've re-read your rules and have some ideas.

I still don't quite get the concept; are these all done in one turn or are these 6 subsequent actions?

Subsequent actions.

It's like the famous "kill a golden dragon with Yred's ability active, get a spectral dragon, cast Raise Skeleton on the corpse, then cast Simulacrum on the chunks, and then Petrify the Lernaean Hydra and order all the golden dragons to deal with her".
In this part, the combo elements are:
  • killing a golden dragon with Enslave Soul ability active (direct-damage attack, gives you an ally);
  • obtaining a corpse of golden dragon (not a direct-damage attack, included here because the subsequent spells depend on it);
  • Raise Skeleton (direct-damage);
  • Simulacrum (direct-damage);
  • Petrify (not direct-damage).

As a result, we have a 3-dam 5-element combo attack that kills the Lernaean Hydra.

Try minimizing the amount of direct-damage attacks (use Enslavement, Imprison, Liquefaction, Inner Flame, throw-a-cursed-weapon-to-the-enemy-so-he-wields-it-and-becomes-weaker...) for an awesome combo attack!

Actually, I think I can stretch that one out a little. :p

Yeah, kinda rounding up there. :lol: Aside from that, best I can come up with is a 3 chain fireball, inner flame, giant spore explosion.

No saves for any of those though. I'll post again if I pull off anything cooler.

Mageykun:
I think your first combo is only a four-element one at its best (let's say you used Scrying). The steps five and six are not counted, since you are not using them to kill Kirke. =)
A good one, nevertheless.

The three-element combo aimed at the jackal is also a nice one!
(Inner Flame somebody else + Fireball at the selfdestructor + make a giant spore explode)

Do we have to do this in an actual game, or can we play around with combos in wizmode?

I ask because most of my ideas would be impractical for a real dude but very fun nonetheless.

Blade wrote:Do we have to do this in an actual game, or can we play around with combos in wizmode?

No Wizmode, please. Or I'd totally do a 17-hit combo attack involving neatly-placed Ball Lightning (with Passages of Golubria I managed to place while Hasted) on a paralyzed stoned polymorphed scared berserked sleepy slow hastened healed tormented hydra with half its heads cut off that is standing on a liquefied ground in a circle of plants it landed on after I blinked it with a dart of dispersal thrown using Portal Projectile after it Teleport Othered next to me and I used Confusing Touch on it while having Blade Hands and Berserk at the same time.

However, you can use save-scumming (I am not asking you to do this in WebTiles or SSH).

Let me just remind you that save-scumming a 10-element combo would cost you much more than I spent on the gift code! ;)
Use small things like exploding darts or cursed weapons and begin as a Stalker, for example. Make a disposable character to the Lair, back up its file and start experimenting!
And do not use the Demonspawn or Chaos Knights: their passive abilities might interfere with your experiments.

If you cannot make a six-element combo, try to do four- or five-element one. Nice ones will still count, just like Mageykun's would have counted.

for a few hours in a desperate attempt to find ANYTHING with f'n LEVITATION so I could quaff a bunch of deadly potions then remove the item of lev over some lava, causing death, but f'n LOUISE banished me to the Abyss before I could find any levitation beyond a potion, which would be unreliable to use because it has to be 6 actions in succession.

Scroll of torment, poison, degen, miscasts of a spell, scroll of immolation, wand of cold on self, wand of slow on self, wand of drain on self, wand of disintegration on self, then unwield levitation. Maybe throw in a spell miscast or two.

You never said suicide wasn't an option.

Good luck to others.

Erm... Xua, please, do not get berserked over it.

I openly told you, friends: you can save-scum if repeated attempts make you too angry to continue.
The idea of the contest is to make people try "low-tier" spells like Liquefaction and rarely-chosen items and tricks like darts of exploding and Fedhas' abilities.
Not to ruin their character I Wanna Be The Guy way while trying to punch that pixel on Mike Tyson's right ear.

And: please, no combo-suicides.
If you find any mistakes or typos in my post, feel free to PM me about it. Thanks in advance!

I never even thought to save-scum.

I was going to reserve a copy of the file right before the last action, but save scum up to the point of doing it, or even scumming to the point of being able to do any of the above actions, simply never came to mind.

Now I kind of want to go find an old .cs file of a level 27 character with all spells memorized.

Heck, I'm sure I can just pull one off of a bug from Mantis.

Then-again, are the games in this bundle worth it?

That would be my first question after seeing that Wizmode is not allowed. =)

Re: Humble bundle to give

If you have doubts about this bundle, I can send you (or anyone else who wins the contest) a gift code for the next one.

One of the games from this bundle, "Zen Bound 2", is a commercial remix of "Zen Bondage", a fairly interesting game in which your target is to bind a wooden figure with paint-covered rope so that the whole figure is covered with paint.
It is more interesting than I have described. =)

"Snuggle Truck" is not too interesting, but it might be a nice game to play with kids.

"Cogs" is a nice game indeed! But it was in one of the previous Bundles.

"Avadon" seems to be one of the RPG-s I liked. Something like "Evil Islands" or "Allods"/"Rage of Mages", in my opinion -- though I have not touched the game yet because I am writing my B.Sc. graduation thesis now.

I'm just wondering what the practical differnces between wizmode and savescumming are, besides that wizmode is less tedious.

Re: Humble bundle to give

Well, I think that the best choice would be waiting for the opportunity to come (and gathering the resources for it), then getting to the opportunity closer, saving the file, and tryng the opportunity until you succeed.
I think it would be the best to experiment in the Lair of Beasts.

You should make combos in naturally occuring situations.
In Wizmode, you can simulate the conditions, and it is not quite like it.

Robo Battle Pigs style: you plan a few actions in a row (each takes a few pips of arbitrary units of time akin to Fallout system), and then see how it acts out -- and all the actions are taken simultaneously.

Sudeki style: fighters get third-person view, ranged fighters / wizards / artificers get first-point view.

A mode where you program your character's possible actions (e.g. if Sigmund then ctrl+Q), Snake Battle-style.
Basically, an exercise in bot-making.

No, Robo Battle Pigs! Click the link.

And, if you played Monty Python And The Quest For The Holy Grail: a bit like Knights (In) Kombat from the Black Knight's point of view. Whenever they do damage to you or whenever you get good equipment, you get panic and hubris points that degrade over time. The more panic or hubris points you have, the less action slots or choices you get.

So I have one more humble bundle to give.

I'm gonna give it to the first cheap bastard or broke chap that post a nice Crawl related acrostic with my pseudonym (VARSOVIE).

Game in the bundle, available for Android, Linux, Mac and Windows:

- Eufloria
- Waking Mars
- Crayon Physics Deluxe
- Sword & Sworcery
(Bonus)
- Avadon: The Black Fortress
- Canabalt
- Cogs
- Swords & Soldiers
- Zen Bound 2
Nearly all with soundtrack and separate Steam key.

Very tired,
After countless deaths,
Redemption.
Saving the world, by grabbing the
Orb, the mystical artifact,
Vengeful of being left
In the Caverns of Zot, which are
Entered by many, left by few.

Does that count?
