I like:
1) Vampires. I enjoy the extra strategy of satiation control.
2) Formicids. Fun drawback, fun benefits.
3) Nagas. Fun drawback, fun benefits.
Honourable mention: Octopode. I must like them, they account for 35% of my games.

I dislike:
1) Humans. Boring as hell.
2) Felids. Equipment roulette is fun. Permadeath is exciting. Felids don't have these things.
3) Tengu. 'cos they suck.
Dishonourable mention: Octopode. They account for only 4% of my wins.

The rest I am indifferent towards. Humans are by far m least favorite with hill orcs being a close second. My favorite species is definitely Demonspawns.

My favorite are demonspawn and draconians; in both cases, I think it's because of the fun of the unknown (mutations and, for draconians, surviving until you get your color/breath.) Of course, I also like ecumenical altars.

My least favorite is probably Felid.

Favorites:

Ogres - I like the lots of damage out, lots of damage in balance.
Octopode - Like ogres, but even more-so.
Draconian - Nicely balanced, doesn't railroad you into one sepcific playstyle, and fun to see what sub-species you are!

Runner up: Halfling before the last round of changes, vampires if they didn't have God and transmutation/berserk restrictions for (as far as I can see) absolutely no reason other than "flavor."

Least Favorite:

Ghouls - The rotting mechanic is negligible most of the time up to extended, where undead resistances basically cancel it out. The rest of the time it makes random difficulty spikes more difficult. If there's a level where you have to go slow and can't hang around to eat corpses playing a ghoul just makes it - 20% Hit Points harder. That seems like bad design.
Gargoyle - Obnoxious difficulty swings. Hard to get off the ground because of low hit points, but you end up tabbing through lair and most of orc. I like the idea, but the execution is boring a lot of the time.
Deep Dwarf - I like 'em in theory - I don't have design problems with them like the other two - but in practice I like getting something for nothing, and DD is the only race that doesn't give you that. Spending HP and MP gives me the stress in my tummy.

I like Nagas just cause I tend to do weirdly well with them relatively speaking, Demonspawn, and Draconians.
Least favorites that I'll even try are probably Tengu, Kobolds, and Mummies.

I won't even touch Centaurs, Spriggans, Halflings (are they even still around?) or Felids.

imho it isn't even weird to do well with nagas. They have +20% hp, bonus armor, and some convenience resists like rPois and Sinv, making it harder to mess up early on. Sure, they're slow, but you're always thinking about that and it isn't too hard to mitigate.

I wouldn't have expected octopodes to be so high, but I included them as well, so glad to see I'm not alone

I dunno, Nagas are extremely easy to mess up early on in my experience. I mean you have no AC or EV and your movespeed is horrible. Nagas get really tanky around the time you complete Lair/Dungeon though, and newer players often have trouble in the midgame, plus they don't really value the ability to run away anyway, so that's probably why Nagas feel easy for them. After all, with enough tries getting to Lair isn't that hard.

While it's certainly possible to get into an impossible situation with Na in the early game, I find having +5 stealth is very helpful for avoiding those situations. Plus rPois helps against adders/ants/bees, big HP helps (a little) against orc priests, and poison spit is a pretty potent ability to have straight from level 1.

Plus, Na seems to do a good job of balancing being weak early with being strong later, so there's that relatively unique feel of enduring a tougher start in order to develop into a tanky juggernaut, while most other species are either strong throughout or weak throughout.

they get rid of a helmet slot for fucking nothing, it's gross and awful when your helmet falls away and all of a sudden you can kinda know where some things are sometimes out of los
