This is probably better known, so maybe not a protip, but I'll throw it out there:

When you search for something and click on the thread, all the words are highlighted in red, and will also be for anyone else who goes to that exact URL if you copy/paste. Whenever this happens there will be a sequence at the end of the URL that reads &hilit=......... except with the search terms and some other stuff instead of those dots. Delete everything to the right of the & in &hilit, including the ampersand. Click on the address bar and hit enter to reload. Voila, no more highlights.
