Orb of Oddities

So Orbs of Destruction are powerful enough to destroy walls and explodimicate stone giants into a bajillion gory chunks of flesh. Why is it then that you can completely negate the destructive power of an Orb of Destruction with a puny little wooden buckler?

It's magic. All shields in Crawl are magical.

You can't actually blow up stone walls with it, only rock and doors (not sure about crystal though, I think you can't).

But the orbs can disintegrate doors and rock walls and yet my wooden dinner plate can take a hit from an orb like it's nothing?

(Also, I said stone giant, not stone wall.)

That's a bit like asking how the shields can block other sources of physical impact without breaking - clubs, giant clubs, warhammers, battleaxes etc.

The last time I checked clubs, giant clubs, and battleaxes are incapable of destroying walls or blowing stone giants into blood and fleshy chunks all over the room, and warhammers don't exist.

Damaging melee hits actually produce can quite a lot of blood.

Re: Orb of Oddities

Because it's fucking bad-ass to hurl away an Orb of Destruction at a fearsome and deadly Ancient Lich like you're some sort of god damn hero and not an elfcannibal

Only if you aren't an Elf. Otherwise youd be a Lannister.

Wood is the natural enemy of the orb of destruction. The orbs are powerless against wood. Of course, in Crawl, doors are made of stone, not wood. Other things that you might think are made of wood but are not: trees, shambling mangroves, Fedhas, wood, Woody Allen.

I understood the Dowan/Duvessa relation to be implied, as well as an alternate definition of "eating".
