Okawaru bug? What just happened?

I'm an Okawaru worshipper fighting an orc wizard that's isolated from me by stone walls and a single square of deep water. I decide to burn a wand of random effects to get rid of the wizard, since that's one of the least valuable consumables I have. It is invisible, so I'm targetting an empty looking space. I've already killed a Jellyfish in the water, so there's nothing else to hit.

Here are the last few message lines:

You hear some strange, mumbled words.
_The puff of frost hits you!
_Nothing appears to happen.
_Nothing appears to happen.
The bolt of negative energy hits something.
Reactivating autopickup.
You feel a bit more experienced.
_Okawaru forgives your inadvertent attack on an ally, just this once.

Was there some ally that I didn't know about? I haven't cast stick to snakes in several dungeon levels, and I don't have any other means of summoning.

Is Okawaru upset about the negative energy, and just using the wrong warning message?

I'm playing on CAO, 0.8.0-3-g99ea1d1, a troll transmuter on D:8 if that helps.

I'm guessing one of the random effects was enslavement, but since he was invisible you didn't realize it. "Nothing appears to happen" doesn't mean that nothing actually happened. His attacks stopped after those messages, then you killed him.

Gods are pretty forgiving about you doing things they don't like unknowingly (Chei doesn't mind you quaff-ID'ing a potion of speed, for example).

Maybe one of the previous effects when 'nothing seemed to happen' it had an enslavement effect but you didn't know because the orc was invisible. Then when you hit it with draining, it counted as a (temporary) ally, so Okawaru didn't like it.
