Re: Mines and mining

If I had to venture a guess, I would say that based on the randomness of the layout, and the armoring, that the orcs are mining with explosives. You arrive dramatically just after the explosives have stopped exploding, so there's still all the gold they blew out of the rocks all over the floor. The armoring, why it was originally just to protect them from the blasts, how convenient that it protects them from you as well.

This would be well supplemented if an orc would occasionally throw an explosive at you.
The above post is for entertainment purposes only. If you think anything I ever say is backed by fact, or if you cite things I've said in any argument ever, you are insane.

And if the gold they blew out wasn't in the form of identically weightless coins.

Re: Mines and mining

mind: blown. Seriously, why did it take so long for us to figure out? Of course Crawl money is bitcoins. How else would you be paying for all the drugs and weapons in the shops.

There are, now I come to consider it, a lot of references to drugs in Crawl.

We should rename gold to AUC (arbitrary units of currency).

Re: Mines and mining

A land mine is an explosive device, concealed under or on the ground and designed to destroy or disable enemy targets as they pass over or near the device. Such devices are typically detonated automatically by way of pressure from the target stepping or driving on it, though other detonation mechanisms may be possible.[1] The device may cause damage either by a direct blast or by fragments that are thrown by the blast.

The name originates from the ancient practice of military mining, where tunnels were dug under enemy fortifications or troop formations by sappers. These killing tunnels ("mines") were at first collapsed to destroy targets located above, but they were later filled with explosives and detonated in order to cause even greater devastation.

And there you have it.

So the Orcs are trying to blow the Dungeon up - maybe to prevent you from reaching the orb?

...and have brought lots of gold coins with them to scatter round on the floor. And built some altars and shops. Now it all makes sense...

They probably gave up halfway through and decided to just live there. Slacker orcs. Slorcs.
