Found leather armour {rPois+} for Lair branches.
This is the most promising generalist-style character I've had in a while -- my most successful builds tend to be somewhat overfocused. The practice of instantly grabbing a floor-drop weapon on all caster backgrounds has helped a lot. I've been experimenting with training early Dodging with good results. Developing good EV seems to kick up my initial survivability a lot more than marginally reducing spell failure or rushing to remove those last few deci-ticks of weapon delay. It's also been sinking in more and more that training magic schools after spell success is decent can be a pretty bad investment, despite the bump in spellpower. Just like training weapon skills past your starting weapon's mindelay, training higher spell skills is a pursuit best delayed until after more advanced books are found.
In this case, I trained magic just enough to get the Minor Magic spells castable, then went all in for Polearms, Dodging, and later Fighting. Save for a few close scrapes, Meph + Spear got me down through Lair:4 without much trouble. Now I'm not sure where to go. Thanks to a lack of higher-tier weapons, I don't see many ways to expand melee-wise save Shields or more Dodging. This would no doubt provide me with excellent defenses, but I'd fear my +2,+4 spear (pierce) and Magic Missile would fall short of an ideal midgame offense. Alternately, I could go hard Conj/Elemental in pursuit of Fireball or Iron Shot, but with so much of my damage coming from melee now, it seems like retracing my steps. I'd expect to invest considerable XP before surpassing the damage output of my trusty spear, and until then my expenditures would be useless. The indecisive route would be to train Charms and get Haste, which I'm going to get it eventually anyway, and hope that better equipment shows up in the meantime. My only worry here is that Haste by itself might not be enough if my other abilities are still lacking.
