CIP: DsFi of Ash

All of the demonspawn warpers I'd been killing off were starting to clog up the translocational highway, so I decided to try a fighter instead, to hopefully survive past Temple. He's at Lair now, though he of course just ran into an 8-headed hydra. In past runs with melee characters I've either been using blunt weapons or had a blunt weapon I could switch to for hydras. What I've found with Ash, though, is that you can't rely on swapping things out quite as easily, since you generally want to keep things cursed when possible. I like keeping my weapon cursed in particular for the skill bonus. In general, I'm enjoying Ash (knowing what's around the corner is really, really useful), but it does create some additional challenges.

So, do I just run from all hydras for now? I'm pretty sure stepping up and slashing it with my sword is a bad idea.

Yes, you should run from them for now. Once you find a good wand or other ranged attack, you can use that to kill them assuming you have room. They have pretty bad MR so your scroll of fear should work if you somehow end up next to one.

And finally once you get to about 35ish AC, you can just kill them with whatever since they can't really punch through that level of AC. You might take some damage here and there, but it should be rare.

Every time a head grows Hydra is healed somewhat so fighting it with a low damage weapon like Short Sword is not a good idea no matter how high your AC is.

If you're using a sblade with low damage you likely have some way to stab it so that doesn't stop working later down the road for some reason, if you have a sabre (which is the only sbl that cuts heads) you probably do more than enough damage to kill the hydra too by then.

Found a wand of cold, which lets me soften up the hydras, then I can kill them quickly up close (even if it does spawn a few heads in the process.)

Just cleared out a small vault on Lair:8 and found something interesting:

This sounds really good, but it makes me wonder if there's a downside. The description makes it sound like it might increase hunger, though I did also find an amulet of the Gourmand in the same vault, which I could potentially swap out for my current guardian spirit amulet.

On a side note: rank 3 powered by death is really, really fun, especially when slaughtering a herd of death yaks.

Cool, sounds like the ring is definitely better than the ring of flight. Changing jewelry is awkward because of having to do the whole curse dance (uncurse gloves, uncurse ring, remove ring, place ring, uncurse amulet, put on amulet of gourmand.) I think I might leave my jewelry slots uncursed for a while, since I don't benefit all that much from those particular skill boosts at the moment.

It is usually a good idea to leave gloves and 1 ring uncursed, it will allow you to swap a ring while still having Ash boost because you have 3 armour and 2 jewelry items cursed.

Well, YASD. First time visting the Snake Pit and had never met Lamia before. The rest of the nagas were pretty easy (had rPois and the regeneration ring pretty much counteracted what poison did make it through.) When I saw Lamia, she hit me with a poison arrow for a fair chunk of damage, so I figured she was a mage type and stepped around a corner to lure her into melee range. After hitting her a few times, I notice she's killing me faster than I'm killing her. I pop teleport at about 50% HP left and try to chug curing potions until it kicks in, but it wasn't enough.

In retrospect, I probably should've ignored the poison status and used heal wounds potions instead. If I see her again, I'll be sure to be better prepared before engaging. It's always tricky knowing which uniques are the really dangerous ones.

Consider using knowledge bot and/or wiki. If you knew her stats, you'd probably avoid her until XL 27 or even forever depending on your character.

Just to add to the confusion, spears/tridents/dtridents don't cut hydra heads, but halberds/glaives/bardiches do. Is it obvious to everyone that bardiches have edged blades but tridents don't? It wasn't to me anyway. Oh and staves/qstaves don't, while lajatangs do, but this one's a bit more obvious.

I've died to Lamia too so I feel your pain. Avoid!

I went back and read the weapon descriptions, and it turns out that halberd, glaive, and bardiche all have the word "blade" embedded in the descriptions, while spear, trident, and demon trident don't. So I guess I just wasn't paying enough attention. Still seems spoilery to me.

Yeah, there's definitely some assumption that people know the difference between "Poke-y weapon on a stick" and "Slash-y weapon on a stick" (Though halberds were technically both slashing and poking weapons) which could be spoilery (Personally I find the distinction between "quick blade" and "short sword" more spoilery for hydra-head-hacking))
