CIP: HOFi of Beogh

Had a relatively easy time so far. I found some decent gear over the first few floors (+0, +1 flail, boots, etc.). I was finally going to try a hill orc WITHOUT Beogh as my god, but I almost got murdered by a group of orcs, so I had to join Beogh again. I need help deciding on buying a new mace. There is a +13, +9 mace of Variability for sale in the shop, and also a +6, +1 mace of draining. I have a 7.6 in maces & flails, and a 9.1 in shields. My current weapon is a +0, +2 orcish flail. What should I use? I've been training shields this whole time, but the mace of Variability seems really strong. Then again, I don't know how bad the random effects it gives could be.

The Mace of Variability is strong and fun and rare so I would use that. If you don't want to use that, I would still not train shields so as to use an orcish great mace of anything. (still use your shield until you find a two-hander you like).

Speaking of training, training only maces for some time would be good.

I bought the mace, and increased training on mace's & flails. I was a bit disappointed, as a few turns after, it dropped from its incredibly high enchantment to +8, +3. Going into a section of the previous floor that was only enterable via staircase now, hope I don't die from eeeeeeevil vaults.

Edit: Ahhh! Cyclops on D: 7 flanking me with a goliath beetle. Luckily the mace went uber high enchantment again, so I killed it in like 2 hits.

EditEdit: Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh!!! Yakataur with rockworm and yak simulacrum! On D:7!!! Mace of variability to the rescue!

I have to be honest, I have no idea. This mace is like Xom ina box. First its awesome, now I smash a bush so my allies can get near me, and one of the bushes runs up and attacks! I hit it this weird bush, and it explodes into fire, putting me in penace under Beogh. Any recommendations on how to get out of penance? Just murder more stuff?

I finish that, go down, sweep up floor 8, go to floor nine, and get shafted to D:12! I use a fear scroll to chase off the horde of frogs, ogre's, and orcs. I kill some necrophages, and I'm looking for the stairs down, trying to avoid some of the stronger enemies.


(Also, spell check thinks troll, ogre, elf, and dwarf are all words? But not orc? What's up with that?)

Oh, yeah, that's what I ment. Came acrossed the lair entrance vault, and 5 headed hydra splatted me. I almost had it killed, then an orc wizard blinked in and lowered my health enough with its dagger swipes.

That's why it's a bad idea to fight a dangerous monster if the fight would bring you to really low HP even in case of success. I am doing the same mistake sometimes though.
