YASD: DsWr

Once more into the meat gri...err, dungeon. This character has been having better luck with drops so far. In particular, I found an interesting +6, +8 hand axe of Governance {chop, +Blink, Int-1} on D:4. I've been investing in long swords, but I'm wondering if it might be worth training axes instead to use this? I already have Blink in spell form, but +6, +8 seems really nice for the early game.

As far as general strategy, I'm not sure what to make of two of my early mutations being claws and talons, as eventually that's going to prevent me from using gloves and boots. I also haven't decided on a god yet; I found an early altar to Sif Muna, but I'm thinking spells are going to be more of a support role for this character. I'm hoping to find a decent ranged weapon at some point to use with portal projectile. That would suggest maybe Okawaru (for ammo), though I've also been wanting to give Ashenzari a try.

For skills, I'm allocating 66% to get a weapon up to min delay asap, but I'm also putting 33% into Translocations to try to get Shroud and Blink reliable. My long-term goal is to have lots of escape tools and use ranged with portal projectile to take out annoying casters/ranged, followed up with melee enhanced with various buff spells. Any suggestions?

You will lose 3 armour slots and will get 3 aux attacks instead, those will be ok with your ring of slaying. Oka will disable your Demonic Guardian mutation. Perhaps Trog is the best choice but I am not sure you want to play with him.

Ash may be a good choice, as you want to go for an hybrid (the skill bonus is better when you have more skills that can benefit from it).

Very true. Also there will be no typical problem with cursing armour.

Was just reading about Ash; I didn't realize you get an ability to transfer skill points. In that case, I think it makes sense to train Axes now, as I can always move weapon skill points around later once I find a good weapon.

Ugh, was going so well. I stepped out of the temple and in the next room was an orc priest, a ton of nasty zombies and other fun things. I pull back to fight at a corridor, then a cyclops comes in from the other side. I start a desperate teleport and try to blink away, but the cyclops hits me with a large rock and squashes me. I had found a ton of curse-related scrolls, too, so I was on track to earn piety fast. Not sure why there were so many tough foes on D:6, but I probably should've gone back to hide in the temple and rest as soon as I was first smited.

I had just left the temple (the square area to the north with a single door on the east side) and visited the room to the east, with the many zombies and orc priest. You can see a zombie standing on the door to the temple at the point I died, ironically enough. I decided a retreat was in order so I went back to the temple area, as it had a nice narrow corridor to fight in. I think the noise attracted the cyclops from the south though (even though the area was partially explored.) I immediately stopped slashing at the zombies and blinked away (Cyclops? No thanks); there wasn't much room to work with though. I popped a teleport and tried to reposition so I could blink back south to run to the stairs to the northwest, but the cyclops got a swing at me while I tried to position for the blink. I finally blinked to the south, but I was still in his LOS, so he chucked that large rock at me, which I really wasn't prepared to handle. It probably would've been safer, oddly enough, to blink to the northeast behind the zombies and run to the corner until the teleport to kicked in, since they would've provided cover from the large rocks and most likely wouldn't claw me to death first. The teleport was already pretty risky, though, since the majority of the level was unexplored.

In general, I haven't been able to keep my Warpers alive very long. They don't have direct damage spells, so they rely on ranged/melee, but their relatively low AC makes them vulnerable once I hit the D:3-D:4 range. I wind up running from most uniques and D:1 or D:2 gnoll packs, setting exclusions. This particular run I was able to take more of them on, thanks to the nice randart axe. Lately I've been investing in early Stealth, which seems to help pick my fights better, but I still tend to get killed once I run into tougher monsters, like orc priests or even lucky hits from iguanas sometimes. The Shroud helps a little, but never seems to last very long. I've been trying High Elf Warpers too (they get skills a lot faster), but they don't seem to fare much better. I got some lucky early armor with my most recent attempt, but an orc wizard surprised him while he was resting from a nasty iguana bite on D:4.

This is not uncommon, I do it with every character except Tr.

Had you closed the door instead of reading teleport, you probably would have survived and been able to run away, everything you were fighting except the orc priest was slower than you, so you could have blinked to the corridor you're in, closed the door and then gone around the corner up the stairs to rest and regroup.

Also note that you had 12 turns prior to dying in order to escape and you died with several blinking scrolls in your inventory.

I actually never realized I could close an open door, but that makes sense. I'll have to keep that in mind when I'm running away from monsters with dangerous ranged attacks.

One challenge here was that the cyclops from approaching from the south and the zombies were approaching from the east, with me caught in the room with the temple. I didn't really want to open the other doors and head into unexplored territory, but that would've probably been a better idea than trying to wait for the cyclops to enter the room and then blink past him to the corridor. I really need to remember that this a turn-based game and slow down when something stressful happens instead of reacting quickly. There's a deep-seated instinct to react, but that's exactly the wrong idea when you have the freedom to weigh your options when things get tricky.

Had another fun moment with a new character: opened the only door out of the entrance vault on D:1 and there was a gnoll standing on the other side. That character set a new record for me for fewest turns.

At least you got a gnoll. When this happened to me, it was a hobgoblin with a club whose first attack did 8 damage. (I only had 8....)
