Found early Jiyva altar and immediately followed it. Got the Slime rune, sadly I couldn't salvage most of the items..

Now that I have the rune, I'm thinking maybe I should switch to Makhleb since this character can really benefit from hp gain on killing. Though if I do that now I would probably get killed by hostile slimes.

When should I switch gods?

Also I'm training EV because I tend to get low hp really quickly when fighting monsters. Would training EV up to 30 before training UC be any good?

Can you find a 1 tile place, closing with doors ?
As the punishment effects are either irresistible (polymorph & mutat) or ennemy spawning, getting in a very small place preventing ennemy spawn with a lot of food (and maybe some rings of sustenance) can help you.
There are rare vaults with tiles bordered only by walls and doors... maybe (MAYBE) the jellies can't spawn and eat those doors ?

Got killed later :( Don't know how should I play melee with this meager AC...perhaps starting as Tm wasn't the right choice.

If you like to try the hybrid route with an Octopode with a different background, I personally like OpEE the most (AC via stoneskin, LRD kills and statue form is an option for an Op melee if you find in time). OpIE is also pretty cool [/pun] and probably stronger than OpEE, freeze kills, ozo's gives AC and the Book of Frost is just pretty darn good overall.

From my experience, Jiyva is best played as a late-game god, after completing everything except Pan, Hells, Abyss, Tomb and Slime obviously.
If you switch early, you will basically lose a lot of spell books, consumables and other items.

The one YAVP I have posted here with an Octopode and late-game Jiyva, pure melee though:
