Tengu Reaver on D:13, seriously who thought this was good?

I wasn't scumming on the level for a long time, it was just a really tough vault. I had already beaten up a storm dragon and got stupid since the reaver hadn't seen me yet. And even if it had, I was blocked by yaks and could have ran. And I know how difficult tengu reavers are, so there were multiple levels of stupidity on my part, to be sure.

But seriously, that vault was grade-A BS, especially since it was not behind a runed door. And D:13 is far too early for anything of the danger level of a tengu reaver to be showing. I mean who can't survive a fast moving, hard hitting enemy that is dangerous at D:27 level?

I think that storm dragon you killed was possibly even scarier. How did you kill it? Did you try just leaving the level and trying your luck in Mines?
This does seem harsh though.

That vault is complete bs. There was actually probably a bunch more crazy stuff there (I've seen shadow dragons and titans). This is the zig zag stone wall 3wide vault right?

Tengu reaver does seem pretty nasty for D13, but in all fairness, you definitely could have escaped from it: you had potion of speed in your inventory, and you could have had swiftness as well. Also, two scrolls of fog. And you could have read the scroll of teleport sooner.

I actually don't think it's a bad thing to have seriously OOD monsters in vaults, even w/o runed doors, though I certainly would prefer that those monsters be on patrol. That's the sort of thing that really hammers home to players, "just because you see it now doesn't mean you can safely fight it now".

Seconded. I feel like DCSS is largely a game about adapting to what the rng throws at you - making the best possible use of what you pick up, and taking every advantage you can find, and also, critically, knowing when to fight and when to run. If it never threw anything hopelessly OOD at you, anything that was just plain impossible to beat, then that decision would have a lot less meaning.

Re: Tengu Reaver on D:13, seriously who thought this was goo

@Sar: I took it out with a bunch of mushrooms and shooting at it from far away. Even then I almost died. You'd think that I would have learned my lesson and just left the vault for later but I'm a bad goodplayer.

@Lasty, I'm not denying the bad decisions I made to even engage it. It was a terrible idea. That doesn't change the fact that there is no reason to have a tengu reaver, ogre mage and storm dragon all roaming free in a giant vault without a runed door. Now is it possible I still would have made the terrible decision to go in there? Definitely. At the same time, I wouldn't have gone "Oh, I've already killed an OM and Storm Dragon along with other difficult monsters, how much more can there be?"
