Hi everyone,

I've only been playing for a few weeks, but have been steadily improving (I've reached Lair about 5 times now, but haven't been able to get past L:4 yet). Anyway, as my first post, I had to share this Stupid Death, because it was totally pointless and avoidable, and I was actually doing quite well (for me).

I had just escaped from two Hydras (one of which I tried and was unable to damage) and Gastronok on Lair:4, and fled to my stash on L:2, deciding to leave the Lair completely for now. But before I left, I thought I might as well quaff-id some potions, even though I already had Healing and Heal Wounds identified (though none in my inventory). The first one was a potion of strong poison, which I didn't know even existed until now, and despite being at full health and 75 hp, it was enough to kill me.

I really didn't know what else I could have done at that point, after drinking it. The only thing I can think of would be to drink the rest of my unidentified potions, hoping that something would cure it. I see I had a mutation potion, maybe I would have lucked out and gotten poison resistance. Is there such a thing as a cure poison potion (aside from heal wounds)? I assume not.

No, there wasn't much you could have done at that point. If you don't have a way of healing it, it's all up to luck as to whether you'll survive for the poison to time out. Strong poison won't generate in the first few dungeon levels for that very reason. Mutation wouldn't have worked; even if you got poison resistance it won't do anything about poison already in your system. The potion of berserk rage is the only outside chance, because the extra hit points might have caused the poison to time out before you ran out of hit points, but the duration is pretty short so there's no guarantee it would have helped.

Thanks for your response. I didn't know that mutation wouldn't work, that's good to know. I also hadn't thought of berserk rage in that way, that's a great idea. I suppose I would have had to chug it once I got very low on hp (I am assuming the extra hp are based on max hp and not current hp), but still would have had to cross my fingers that I would outlast the potion. Oh well, lesson learned: Don't quaff-id potions past the first few dungeon levels!

Two lessons I guess:

1 is that there are a few safety precautions you should take when quaff-IDing: do it in a safe place (Temple is good) in case of confusion or paralysis. The other is always have a potion of healing (not heal wounds) in your inventory in case it's something particularly bad (degeneration, strong poison...). Early on I also keep going until I hit Cure Mutation - generally there's only one of those, and you want to hold off until finding another in case of a bad roll ruining your day with an un-identified potion of mutation. Obviously the opposite is true if you drink an early potion of mutation and get Slow Metabolism, +10%MP and Fast Movement :P This last is just me though, other people do it differently.

2 you kind of touched on already - squishy caster-types get powerful less quickly than the Lair gets difficult. After losing a few EEs in a row in Lair 5-7, I forced myself to stop at Lair 4 and go back to the main dungeon for a while, and it worked very well.

Well, that's not the precise definition of suicide I think. You didn't knew that it will kill you, therefore it's more like "accident".

Once I suicided my character in a quite spectacular way. Was somewhere in 5-10% HP with no means of healing and/or escaping and some nasty OOD monster few tiles away. I just pointed disintegration wand at myself and shot it. That was a quick death...and a messy one. Chunks allover the dungeon.
In highscore table was marked "killed with a bad targeting"
Thought to myself - "Heck, more like, killed with a good targeting" =)

@joellercoaster, thanks for those tips, I understand better now just how foolish I was. I love how much there is to think about in this game! :D As far as Lair... all of my top 6 characters died there, mostly to hydras, but for other reasons too. It has definitely been my first major wall that I'm trying to get past (though I can only even get to the Lair about 1 in 10 games, it seems).

@Curio, yes that's true, it is more of an "accident", but I felt that "suicide" was more dramatic for the headline. :)

No you can Quaff Id potions whenever you want.... just make sure you have a Potion of healing before doing so.
