You died because of zero INT. It's called stat death. When any of your attributes (STR, INT, DEX) gets decreased to zero or less, you will die just like when your HP hits zero.

EDIT: But I don't get the "unknown source" part.

I'm guessing his INT deteriorated due to hunger, since he is a Ghoul.

When you die from lack of INT it says you forget how to breathe. But Ghouls don't need to breathe since they are undead. Thus the "you cease to exist" bit.
