CiP: TeAE of Vehumet

I'm infatuated with Tengu and TeAE in particular. I'm killing them in the hundreds, probably. The thing is: I really enjoy their early game and it feels very controlled to me -- in 99% of all cases I know with any death before Lair that it was my fault and I know what was my fault.

But at around the time where I'm with this char, now, I'rm running out of steam. I'm unsure, how to proceed from here, both in this particular case and in general.

What I'd like to do: Raise weapon skill and armour, and develop my melee. Unfortunately no good medium armour (ring or scale) has shown up that would make raising armour rewarding. And weapons? Meh. The best one is the flail I'm having in inventory. Would it be worth to switch?

Failing that, should I get a more powerful lightening bolt and use that as my main method of killing? Right now I'm trying to make do with a mix of melee, Static Discharge, and LB.

How do the other spells fit in, tactically? I hear that Airstrike is good, but I've hardly used it so far. I figured that Dazzling Spray would be nice befor melee, but I find the results underwhelming, though that is probably due to low spellpower ...?

I would expect a mage with conjurations to have his magic skills at least not lower than his defensive and weapon skills. Airstrike is quite weak unless you attack flying monsters and you have a high spellpower or if you want to attack something that's behind something else.

Re: CiP: TeAE of Vehumet

Airstrike is weak-ish for it's level, but it does have a long way it can be raised spell-power wise. It's main advantage though is definitely the smite targeting, killing that boggart or orc priest behind a pack of stuff is very helpful (It's going to take a bunch of hits at high spell power if you hope to kill that convoker before he can get his spell off, and of course tormentors are good targets)

Dazzling spray hits three targets, and can blind them, which is very helpful. It doesn't do lots of damage though (I mean it does ok for it's spell level, but it's just not that high level of a spell) It's good to keep things from hitting *you* while you pound them with higher-powered spells (or weapons)

Re: CiP: TeAE of Vehumet

Yes, having progressed a little further, I'm noticing the difference. Airstrike is nice against flying targets, Dazzling Spray is nice before going into melee or as a finisher to pArrow. Melee is okayish even with my crappy +2 quarter staff of freezing. Groups I kill by filling the dungeon with Poisonous Clouds, which I'm possibly going to replace with Freezing Clouds later.

The RNG has been tempting me with a demon trident of pain, but I withstood that temptation.

I learned Blink and Butterflies for escape. What I'm wondering now is: Vehumet is offering Chain Lightning. Is there a point to learning it, or is that nieche already covered by pArrow?

I think Chain Lightning can be useful to high EV character with rElec when it must fight a group of high AC monsters in the open. Not sure how often it happens.

Why? Your staves skill cross-trains with pole-arms, and you have a +1 aptitude to start so it will become usable from weapon skill very fast. (You will effectively have a +5 aptitude for your first 12.2 levels of pole arms, which will make the d. trident plenty effective and is actually almost enough to get it to min delay.) Unless you really don't want to branch into Necromancy at all, getting the demon trident of pain online is a very good option. Don't immediately switch, obviously, but it would be worth considering branch out in another direction for that weapon, given that you've kind of been playing this guy as a hybrid. Innate reaching of pole arms is good on Tengu in particular because you get a speed boost while flying, stacking with swiftness and haste.

Yep, a DT(I like to abbreviate everything) of pain could be a really good weapon for a hybrid, you could also animate some deadies and reach from behind them.

Uh, okay, well, it's not too late, but ...

Aren't my skills already starting to get spread somewhat thinly? I figured, I'd be better off making pArrow stronger, reducing the hunger cost of my spells, so I can ditch "Gourmand, raising fighting, dodging and hopefully armour, and maybe working towards Chain Lightning.

I also thought that enemies vulnerable to pain also mostly overlap with those I can deal with through pArrow and pCloud.

I must admit, I'm a little bit confused now.

Hunger cost is seldom a problem, so long as it is not like ration-level, or *high*-honeycomb level for stuff you are *spamming*, and I mean if you've been running gourmand for a while you've probably saved up a ton of permafood, yes? If you don't want to go the whole "melee and spellcasting" hybrid thing that's totally your call, but if you are going to, that d. trident is a really crazy good drop and you should consider taking advantage of it. Raising fighting and dodging is a good idea, and if you want to focus spell casting a bit more it is your call. I was just pointing out that if you *do* want more of a hybrid, switching to that may be worthwhile, though you will have to raise necromancy. (But necromancy is good, especially for hybrids and gives you a lot of other options.) These are just things you can do, your character can be viable doing any of them, or something else entirely.

Seriouly? I have much too learn about nutrition management, then. I mean, four hashes are okay for me. But at six or so, I'm getting hungry too fast; and as a rule, the RNG sends only non-edible foes for a while, when I'm hungry. How do you cope with up to eight?

Players aren't allowed to see these anymore. Spell hunger is just expressed in hashes now. In general, if there are less than 8 hashes of hunger, you shouldn't worry about it.

Thanks man, running 10.2 on my crappy old computer at the moment (long story) so I forget these things.

In general, raise spell casting when you need to memorize more spells, 9 times out of 10 that keeps hunger costs for spells reasonable, the other 1 out of 10 times will be some edge case and in such cases it will probably be obvious that getting more spell casting is necessary.

Re: CiP: TeAE of Vehumet

I don't get it. I mean, I'm not debating that this is possible -- you guys are far better at the game than I am. I just don't understand it.

If I have my major damage dealer at a high hunger cost (more than four "####"), I will inevitably run into a situation where I have to cast it repeatedly and without occasion to feed on chunks. I will eventually burn through all my permafood; in fact, I have lost two or so (I think) promising chars to starvation around lower Lair, because I didn't get the hunger cost of that major damage dealer down. Even four "####" is okay only, if it's damage output is really effective. Part of this is that the more dangerous opponents, uniques for instance, often require a) several shots and b) often enough multiple rounds of disengaging, traveling, encountering again, fighting again under hopefully more favourable circumstances and/or more love from the RNG. Add to that the requirement of resting up spent MP, and all too often HP.

I'm aware that it's probably impossible to explain how you deal with high hunger spells, since that probably involves strategy of dungeon exploration, tactics and the precise moments of when you butcher and feed. But anything that helps to enlighten me would be appreciated.

***

Perhaps ... a thought: Are we talking about different usage scenarios? The way I'm using spells vs. melee right now: Opponents are falling basically into two categories: Those that I'm fighting with spells and easier foes that I'm fighting with melee. How many types of opponents fall into the "melee" category depends in part on how much I have developed melee. Those may be most of what I encounter in a typical level. But basically I'm always working with the distinction "foes that need spells" and "easier foes that I can attack with a weapon".

So, always, like here with this char, I'm concerned about a) getting more powerful damage spells, so I can deal effectively with increasingly dangerous foes. And b) developing melee, so that more foes fall into the "popcorn" category.

Are you perhaps using melee more consistently, against almost all opponents, with damage spells more or less as a "softener"? I could imagine how to manage the hunger cost in that case, provided it is an effective strategy.

Or maybe I just suck at this game.

Re: CiP: TeAE of Vehumet

Well you're definitely not the worst player in this thread. Your goals are for the most part practical and have good reasons behind them. You do seem to have some uncertainty about them, though. Basically, to plan a character like this out, you only have to set some goals, think about how much xp you're likely to get during your game, and imagine allocating it. Given what your character looks like now, what would be the best way it could look after, say, 3 runes? In what order should you get there?

On this character, I would want something like this: staff of air and buckler of cold resistance; robe or that leather armour, w/e; haste/parrow/tornado/chain lightning; 20 fighting, 18 dodging, 12 staves, 5 shields, 16 spellcasting, 10 charms, 12 conjurations, 12 poison, 1 summoning, 1 tloc, 27 air. That would be a really solid looking character with a lot of options.

I would want to get there first by training fighting to 12 (if you look at your skills in terms of their current level and how important each of them is, this is the one you need the most right now. You needed this in the first dump you posted, in fact) and poison magic to 12.

You may not want the same things I would, but I hope this is at least illustrative about how to keep going.

Re: CiP: TeAE of Vehumet

Thanks a lot! That is really very helpful to me, not just for this char, but also in general. The questions "How much xp do I need to make something usable? How much can I reasonably get before the end game?" and "How much must my character be developed to be able to tackle Zot?" -- those have indeed been sitting uneasily in my mind. Your advice and skill suggestions are a good guideline that I can adjust depending on the situation and the experience I make in the dungeon. If not with this char, then with the next.
