YASD: DsFi of Ash

I managed to get a DsFi of Ashenzari off the ground. Cleared Lair and Orc, and with the Orc:4 shops explored I figured it was about time to plan some equipment changes, which with Ash take a little more planning than usual. In case it matters, this will be a 3-runer and I'd like to play a melee/magic hybrid, since so far I've only won with either pure melee or pure magic.

Body armor options:

My current plan was to switch the rF scale mail for the rPois chain mail, the axe of freezing for the vampiric one, to keep on the useless clarity for the skill boosts since I don't have any curse jewellery scrolls and to switch the rPois/MR++/SInv ring for the slaying one once I can afford it. Is this a reasonable idea or would you guys suggest something different?
Also, I can learn Spectral Weapon. Would that be a good idea with this build or would it just open me up to a bunch of AC- bypassing damage? If I'm using the vampiric axe, do I get additional healing from the spectral one?

Naturally, any other tips are welcome as well.

Man, those are some nice jewelry choices..

Except for snake and spider (and Mennas), rPois is just a waste of time, especially if you are running around with a vampiric battleaxe. Its a hassle if you are running with Ash, but still it would be better to hope for a ring of rPois and switch it out when needed (can always leave a ring slot uncursed). You can put off snake/spider or you could use the rPois chainmail for those and then switch again once you are out.

I would switch the clarity amulet out immediately for the rCorr rF++ amulet, regardless of whether or not you can curse it just yet. Remove curse scrolls are all over the place, eventually Ash will corrupt one correctly for you. rF++ is going to save your life. EDIT: just saw this is in a shop, how much is it?

Definitely nice rings, also very nice that one of them has MR.

Since you are missing 1 point of str, plate is out and chainmail is what you have, I would go for the MR++ as you would then be rF++ MR+++ and that is pretty solid for a lot of nasty attacks, and your +12 slaying and freezing battle axe means you wont have to worry for long about melee brutes. Eventually tho you are going to find some runed plate, for which you are going to want 1 more point of str..

How does it work in trunk, or better is there a current running changelist from 0.12.

I'm playing a DsFi right now as well though I'm a bit behind you (on Lair:7), but looking at all that sweet stuff it seems like my gear is so much worse. If you want to do hybrid then plate is out, right? I mean you can't really cast in that without a serious investment in skills, can you?

This recent YAVP was casting Haste in plate despite starting out as a Troggie. 11.2 Spellcasting, 14.9 Charms, 17 Int.

In trunk you get a continuous logarithmic mitigation of your armour penalty from your strength. So rather than there being some specific exact "cut off" where you've eliminated all the penalties you can from a given bit of armour (That being 3* the evasion penalty in .12) you have a smooth curve of penalty-vs-strength, being short one point of the old value isn't a big deal, and having one point *more* strength than the old cut off value actually does give you some additional benefit.

Also even under the old .12 system, being 1 point shy of the maximum strength cut-off required wasn't a death sentence for a given bit of armour, that particular mythical min-maxing point was one of those over-hyped points that made it into common lore. Yes, it was a good idea to get your 18 strength if you were going to use plate armour, no it was not "completely out of the question" with only 17 strength.

Perhaps, but I always find poisoning annoying enough to try to have rPois up if at all possible. Besides, I have Swamp this run and as far as I know rPois helps prevent confusion from swamp drakes, which actually could be a problem.

That amulet costs 779 gold, which would significantly delay getting the second slaying ring. Granted, it might help a bit with the centaur packs I'll be encountering in the near future when clearing D down to the Vault entrance, but neither of the two lair branches features any fire damage, save for uniques, which means slaying will be a lot more useful in the short to medium term. Which of the two would you guys recommend?

You can check the wiki article for a more detailed description of the new mechanic. As for a list of all the changes, there's a changelog.txt in the docs folder when you download a trunk build that features most of the highlights. For all the nitty gritty details you can check the git changelog, but it's very long and full of incredibly minor changes like fixes for individual vaults and spelling corrections and such.

That's what I used to think too, but from what I've heard this is not true and casting in plate mail is in fact very common. Sure, it requires a bit more skill investment but it's apparently not that hard. I'm hoping to see for myself whether this is true in this run.

Man, +6 slaying with an executioners axe is more than enough for quite the long haul, especially if the axe is healing you at the same time. You would be better off getting the rCorr and rF++ now, by the time you really need (want) the extra damage, the gold will be flowing again.

+12 slaying isnt going to do anything if you walk around a corner just to get hosed by some fire breathing monstrosity from across LOS.

Meh. Kirke is only threatening if she porkolates you with other monsters around. Erolcha, I'll grant you, can vary between pushover and severely annoying. In this game I killed him in 6 turns before I had either of my MR rings. Sentinel's Mark has never been much of a problem for me (granted, I've only gotten about three or four characters up to that point since the Vaults overhaul). I just waited out the effect. Personally, I'm vastly more concerned when I see a convoker, because those have nearly killed me several times. Monsters with confuse aren't too common. The most common (swamp drake) can be solved with rPois. And I can't say I've ever even remotely cared about MR when clearing Orc. The only really dangerous enemies there are high priests; sorcerors are just slightly harder wizards.

Of course, I'm not saying I'll go out of my way to avoid MR because obviously the more, the better, but outside of Elf you can survive just fine without it. Clearing Elf without MR, however, should only be done if you wish to get intimately familiar with the Abyss, since you'll be visiting there frequently.

If you're wanting to hybrid the randart chainmail is a possibility but a dragon armour is the way to go imo. Normally I'd recommend going for ice dragon armour since you've got that sweet rF++ ammy in the shop (which you should buy now) but since you only plan on a 3-rune game rC is not that important (you can just pop on a cold resist ring when necessary). Either mottled or storm would be the best, mottled if you don't want to invest as heavily into magic, storm if you want beefier defences (rElec is nice for zot as well). You could also consider fire if you find a way to compensate for the cold vulnerablility (already got a rC ammy in shop so another source of rC and you're good to go).

Also would not buy the slaying ring since you've already got a better one and you'll usually be wanting the other ring slot for something more important.

You should probably check out the sorceror's spellset next time before you meet them with low magic resistance.

Every species gets magic resistance when they level up so being "without it" is pretty difficult. If you mean being without additional sources, then you should know that many people consider MR to be the generally most useful resistance (well, if not fighting something like an orb of fire). Fire resistance ring is usually pretty easy to put on when you meet that fire giant. However, you can't switch rings if you are already paralyzed.

Well, that ended quickly. Everything was going fine: I had some pretty nice gear and had just gotten the Snake rune. On a side note, vampiric batteleaxes are awesome, since I could pretty much tank the rune vault. A few steps into Swamp:5, I see Mara. Okay, let's see... rF+++? Check. Abjuration? Check. Let's do this, I've spent enough time running away from this guy in other games. I use a scroll to blink next to him, prepared to start with the hitting. Having landed in my new location, I can now see Mennas. This, of course, should have been my clue to get the hell out of there. Instead, I figured Mennas' silence would more or less neutralize Mara. I think you can guess how that worked out. I could barely hurt Mennas and he was damaging me just fine. Thanks to the silence, I had no escape options aside from trying to throw dispersal darts at Mennas, which failed completely. Oh well.

I guess Crawl has been kind to me so far. Looking through the logs of my four wins it seems I've only encountered him once, and in that case I defeated him pretty quickly (probably with summons). Don't worry, he is now on my list of 'things to run way from really fast', particularly when partnered with other uniques.

Yeah, "Holy blade vs demonspawn" is nasty enough, then adding "using vampiric" against an angel who isn't effected by vampirism, and "no non-silenced escape mechanisms" vs "angel who casts silence" and you've got a whole lot of "Nope"

Also using dispersal darts with 0 throwing against a creature with high EV *and* a good shield is as close to useless as one could ask for :)

For future info, you did survive long enough for Mennas's silence to wear out, you could've read a teleport scroll when his aura of silence retracted down to one square (There's always at least one turn in which his silence aura prevents him from re-casting it, but you can still take some un-silenced action)

I'm not sure you'd have survived long enough for the TP to work, but if you'd read it when you had your opportunity, and then retreated you might have avoided dying long enough to TP away.
