YASD: HuGl of Makhleb, a fun and intense party

This dude was the one I posted on this thread: viewtopic.php?f=8&p=120192#top

So yeah, humans are lots of fun. With this guy, it all began with him on D:1 as a falchion-wielding gladiator... but man, an early sling and bullets? Why not! I then got slings trained to 5, but soon after, a centaur popped out from nowhere and decided to ruin my life with flaming arrows. And so after I turned the poor thing into chunks of yummy raw flesh, I ditched my sling for it's sweet, sweet flame bow. And so I trained bows to 8 (enough to obliterate early orc and even YAK packs)... but of course after I got my long blades to 12 first (for min delay with scimitars). And I hadn't even seen the entrance to Lair yet! I was still on D:9.

Things started to get hairy after I met Erica and Erolcha on D:10. I tried to escape to D:11, but a nasty welcoming committee (centaur pack, cyclops, hydra, etc... apparently there was some vault with green walls not far from the stairs) forced me to go back upstairs. After some time, I managed to find the entrance to Lair, made a stash on Lair:2, but then bailed after I saw my first elephants pack (I doubted if my +1 flame bow would cut it). I then decided to continue diving down the main dungeon (managed to kill both Erica and Erolcha with a bit of luck, zero see invisible, and pathetic MR). The nasty dudes on D:11 were no more after some tough fights, and I managed to get my bow to min delay. I didn't waste any time and started training Invo afterwards. By D:14 my Greater Servant ability was in perfect 1% failure condition. This whole thing somehow made me more confident, a little bit too confident perhaps....

And so it began, the beginning of the end of Paiman bin Paiman (which means "Paiman the son of Paiman" or Paiman Jr. if you like, since my previous human was named Paiman so this one was like his son or something, you know, and Paiman is a Javanese name btw, lol). Just a few steps from the stair, I met some... can't remember now, but they were nasty and forced me to run back to the stair... which somehow got blocked by several white ugly things that weren't there before. So, sh*t, I thought. I ran to a nearby corridor... and by some cruel RNG humour it got me sandwiched between the ugly things and some other monsters instead. I read a tele scroll in panic, landed near, guess who... Aizul. And so I read another tele scroll because I liked this character. This time it got me in between some creatures that weren't supposed to be too dangerous for me now, but they were since they surrounded me. And so... I don't know, maybe because I wasn't familiar with Makhleb (been playing too many Trog and Oka games), it just occurred to me that I had the FRIKKIN GREATER SERVANT PANIC BUTTON ready to be pressed. And so I pressed it, which sent a FRIENDLY EXECUTIONER. Thank God! The demon then destroyed the monsters in full angry haste mode. Whew!

Just a moment after the tension had been released, there came Aizul. I was like, holy frikkin hell. My executioner pummeled her, all the while Paiman bin Paiman drowsed off since his MR was pathetic. I watched in terror as he woke up; the executioner wasn't there anymore, apparently Aizul was still too tough for him. But hey, Aizul was almost dead too! Hey, if I could just kill her myself... and so I proceeded to shoot with my bow INSTEAD OF PRESSING THE FRIKKIN PANIC BUTTON AGAIN since I STILL GOT THE PIETY (yeah, I wasn't too experienced with Makhleb). Aizul, even in her badly wounded state, laughed at my petty shower of flaming arrows. One poison arrow later, and here I am, typing this YASD post.

Oh well, it was fun, really. :D

Uniques like Aizul or Lamia reminds me that even a monster with a red health bar can sometimes definitely kill you in 1~2 shot.

Yeah, it was definitely a lesson: don't screw around with uniques no matter what. :D

Don't feel sorry about forgetting to call another executioner. It easily could be hostile ;)
I believe it is not last panic button, it is more "Can I kill them or should I just run?" button. If you get a friendly summon, you use it to win the fight. If not, you just escape as you wanted to.

I think you overtrained Fighting. Dodging could be more useful at that point.

I would have been using Wands to finish off Aizul. Your +1+1 Bow wouldn't have cut it. You couldn't have enchanted it at all? I guess some games you don't get lucky with enchant scrolls...

Summoning another Greater Servant might have also worked but then again I like to finish off uniques myself to get the full XP, instead of just half. And Aizul's worth a lot. Perhaps a Lesser Servant could have sufficed, just to distract him for a while so you could land a killing blow more easily. Smoke Demon allies are pretty excellent.

In addition, did you remember to quaff Agility? The +5 to EV always makes me feel a lot safer against hard-and-fast-hitting foes like Aizul, or any uniques really.

lol thanks, and is it really 14? My scimitar was hitting "quite fast" at 12.

Well, I was saving my enchant scrolls for a future longbow, lol. I thought it wouldn't be long until I got one from a centaur warrior or something.

I was really not in the right state to think clearly; I completely forgot about potions, all I could think was going Rambo mode against Aizul, haha. Yeah, an agility potion would be great, sadly. (A more foolproof plan might be to use the tele wand, I dunno. I'm not sure summoning a lesser servant would be helpful, since AFAIK enemies tend to keep focusing on your character unless they are getting some really heavy opposition from some powerful ally of yours (and lesser servants aren't powerful enough); and Aizul was very close to my character (melee range), so she was very likely to keep hammering me no matter what.)

Rambo == Rambo (Note that you didn't have the explosive tipped arrows at this point), Aizul == Predator

Rambo + "almost dead" Predator = face chewing.

Re: YASD: HuGl of Makhleb, a fun and intense party

Unless the second greater demon you should have summoned arrived both friendly and in the line of fire between you and Aizul, he probably would have still poison arrow'ed you to the face. So you'd probably not make it. Being at 8 health really your only option is a heal wounds potion/wand or blinking to someplace that is out of his LOS. In certain specific situations with enough walls and distance, fog may work.

Makhleb summons cost HP to use also, so you didn't even have enough health to summon another demon. Greater demon is 10 hp if I recall, and you'd be prevented from casting it.
