YAVP (DrFE -> EE)

How do you dump morgues in .12? I am used to a button in tiles, but I cannot find it in this version.

Ok this is the situation, I started as an DrFE, but found an early book of earth and turned gray, so I went EE. Currently XL 14.

On the short term, After clearing most of Lair 8 and down to D13 I decided to clear Orc 1-3. After doing Orc 1, I went down the stairs to Orc 2 and saw two orc sorcerers next to me, an orc knight (with a polearm) 1 square away, and various popcorn orcs. After looking at it for a while I decided the best choice was to just go right back up the stairs. This would leave the orc knight and most of the popcorn behind, leaving me with the two wizards only. Naturally one of the orc wizards paralyzed me on the way up, so that by the time I made it back up I was at 52/107 (I do like having 27 AC as a caster). Not ideal, but better IMO than blindly blinking/teleporting in an unexplored level.

At this point I am debating drinking one of my potions of speed, then (perhaps) my one potion of invis, and then going to town with iron shot on the two casters. I have mana enough for 6-7 casts plus various wands.

I also have the aforementioned scrolls of blink, teleport, and also fog. I could blink away, fog, and almost certainly make it to the stairs out.

Re: Short term and long term advice

The '#' key creates a character dump. (Press '??' in game to see all the key commands.)

Are you still only facing two orc wizards? If so, a post-Lair elementalist with 52 HP and 27 AC should be able to take them down without resorting to consumables.

Note that orc wizards do not have Paralyze on their spell list, so if one of them paralyzed you, it has a wand. See if the game identifies which one of them is carrying the wand and prioritize him.

For this message the author BlackSheep has received thanks:

Re: Short term and long term advice

Thanks for the advice.

Correction, they are sorcerers, not wizards (edited the original post). One of them definitely has paralyze

also here is the dump/.

Question for you. Given the stats/apts would you go for Bolt of Magama, or Fire? How about Fireball vs LRD?

Re: How do you draw a card? (CIP)

Ok, I beat the previous two orc sorcerers by popping a teleport and spamming iron shot while paranoid visions of paralysis and draining bolt when through my head.

Guy is now on Zot3, and although I KNOW I should have left the mass of doors alone, I opened them...and unleased hell.

Fortunatly, I have been keeping a legendary potion card for just this reason, and the deck is in hand. The problem is that I can't fumble the draw or I'll probably die.

Also, I am at a bit of a loss on what to train. Earth is for the title, and spellcraft is free up room for LCS (I will probably forget stone arrow). I realize that LCS gives me 3 single target spells, but in this case Iron Shot is my bread and butter, OOD is my long range spell (dang earth ranges), and LCS would be the "big gun".

Suggestions?

My question is, why do you want to draw a card when you're not even following Nemelex? Using your magic spells would be so much better than blindly drawing a card.

You are probably going to be disappointed with that potion card. You can press v to evoke the deck and use it, but the best result you could possibly get from it is worse than using heal wounds.

Re: How do you draw a card? (CIP)

Wow, I thought that a potion card from a legendary deck was always a full heal. If I had know that I would not have bothered and used the Fog instead. Now I fear that Fog may be too little, too late. I suppose this guy is going to die then. Any tips?

Later edit: Fog and a short teleport timer (I had already zapped myself) kept me alive.

Re: How do you draw a card? (CIP)

You were no doubt thinking of Elixir, and legendary decks don't guarantee highest level card power (though they do make it substantially more likely.)

It is hard to give concrete tips because your dump, as included, does not appear to show the actual situation. But yes, 18 hps in a door vault in Zot:3 is kinda bad news.

YAVP (DrFE -> EE)

Well this is the first caster I have ascended. I had a lot of fun with this guy, and I did not want to get him splatted in extended. I never found a resist mutation amulet, but I only saw 2 orbs of fire , and LCS took care of them pretty quickly; they never got a mutation off (shining stars in the abyss OTH :roll: ). Otherwise the floor gods were not very kind, but the shopkeepers were nice, selling me both the amulet of warding and ring of robustness.

Thoughts on this win. The first is that I REALLY liked having Plate level AC on a caster (AC 40). However, the second most important thing is that made a point to play in spurts and stop playing when I was in a dangerous situation, I think it was the latter instead of the former that kept me from getting distracted and killed.

I love the untyped damage of earth magic, but the range was sucky. I would not do it now without Vehemut. Despite using shatter (a bit), my bread and butter was Ironshot. An early ++stealth item was surprisingly useful. Not only was I able to close the range enough to get off the first shot despite a shorter range, but when I did start blasting, I was able to slink off and not get chased by the angry mobs; it also kept be from being bothered while I rested up (usually).

Although I went earth because of my scales and an early book drop, I think the Dragonian is especially strong candidate for fire elementalist. Unlike many other casters (cough, deep elves), they seem to have both the AC and HPs to be able stand toe to toe with a mob....at least long enough to drop a sticky flame and then back off :) When it comes to colors, I think gray is probably my new favorite. The extra AC alone is better than a situational breath weapon IMO; the unbreathing and waterwalking felt like gravy. Between the lack of armor (mid-late game) and vehemut meant that I never really had a problem with spell failure. I could cast shatter by the end of lair (with a ring of wizardy), but did not bother because of noise and spell slot limitations.

I probably could have gone to extended, but after going to tomb (and irritating the first floor with shatter) I nearly died twice and decided not to risk it. Also, I pretty much had all the skills I wanted, so I figured, why not win.

Re: YAVP (DrFE -> EE)

Being stealthy really helps in Tomb. Ideally you want to fight 3~4 mummies at a time (1~2 for greater and priest mummies).

Return to YASD! YAVP! and characters in progress too
