CIP (now YAVP): HOBe 3-runer (first melee win)

Well, it took me long enough but I've finally managed to get a melee build to the point where he has a chance of winning. All that's left to do is to get the silver rune and go do Zot. And maybe forest, but from what I've read and from the bit of it I've seen with this character so far it's rather annoying to do as a melee char, so I'm planning on skipping that. Getting the silver rune, of course, involves going to V:5, which leads me to my question. What would be a good way of handling it for this character? I can see a few options:

1) Use stairs to bring 9 vault guards up with me at a time.
2) The usual 'blink to one of the hallways, run away from the center and slowly clear the level' approach
3) Use evokables to create an army of my own (before or after going down the stairs?)
4) Do Forest first to buff up a bit more, though I doubt the extra XP will matter and the chance of better loot than what I currently have is pretty small. Also, not doing it means I get to leave Boris there to rot.

Alternative suggestions, as well as any other tips regarding this character are of course welcome.

Vault entrance is pretty easy for this type of character.

Pull up guards from the entrance a group at a time, ideally less than 9, but however many are next to you in each group.

Your axe will let you hit all of them at once, make sure you aim at a guy who doesn't have someone opposite them.

If you're concerned about taking that many hits at once, summon some critters before you go down the stairs, they'll stagger the number of guards you get at a time, so you only have to fight 2-3 instead of 7-8.

Rest before you go back down.

*important* fight them all upstairs so you don't draw tons of extra bad guys.

Once they're cleared out, I'd clear out the narrow hallways then work on the rooms.

Oh, and if the number of bad guys you've brought up in one go seems overwhelming don't be afraid to use BiA and even berserk once you've brought them upstairs.

I'd use methods 2 and 3 (after being downstairs). If you have an amulet of rage I'd consider berserking the guards (its berserk extension will stack with Trog's) but try to be only standing on or next to stairs during that fight (and use the evokables before you berserk).

Stair dancing Vaults:5 seems pretty bad to me in general --- it's at the root of the majority of the Vaults:5 deaths I've watched. (Also, since you're playing trunk, there's no guarantee it will even be possible if you encounter a stair-locking warden.) As a Be it is probably a little harder for you to get outside than for Swiftness/Haste characters, but it should still be doable. If you have any unmulched scrolls of fear that you have lying around, those will usually keep everything from rushing you at the beginning and give you a few turns to get into position. (If you have no reason to prefer a direction based on other monsters around, run to the side with the most guards afraid. In my experience there is practically always one side where all 6 guards are frightened.) You can also use blinking, but it's probably preferable to keep both of those for other situations where there are no substitutes.

In terms of the evocables, you could use the fan if you somehow get jammed up before you get outside the ring of guards, but other than that do not use your evocables by the stairs. It's still a crappy place to fight and you'd like to hold onto them in case you need them elsewhere.

Interesting, I've never died once doing that, I've died every other way imaginable, but not stair dancing V:5. Perhaps I over-prepare for V:5

I've never had such a warden arrive if I fight everything upstairs, I usually attract 1-5 "Other critters" But obviously if one does show up and lock the stairs, then you can't stair dance

The "Fighting stuff in the corridors" is no less viable a strategy after many of the initial guards are dead though.

This sounds risky to me, not only because of the possibility of berserk running out before everything's dead, but also because of the possibility of stair-locking guard with no way to use consumables to get into a better position.

Ended up going the 'use fear, run to a corridor' route, which worked less than ideally. Turns out fear doesn't work nearly as long as I thought it might, which meant the entire welcome squad had gotten over their phobia of me and was in hot pursuit before I was even halfway down the central corridor. Goody. Running for my life, I reached the outside corridors where I just barely managed to survive by using all of my summoning evokables. Got in a few more harrowing situations clearing the rest of the level (whoever thought it would be a good idea to put convokers on V:5, you are an evil, evil person), but I managed to survive. In retrospect I probably should've used BiA more. Still, this level is so much easier for a firestorm-wielding deep elf (then again, most levels are). Anyway, next stop: Zot.

+0 gloves also seem worse than your +2 gloves of dex - I assume those got corroded to -2 or something?

that said the orb run won't be bad with your axe and boots. pity you have no source of haste though - do potions of speed exist? if so it'd be worth detouring for them.

Really? From what I read GDA is generally the thing heavy-armor users wear. I mostly used it because it allowed me to get up to rF+++. Guess I'll switch it for the +3 MR plate now that the OoFs have been dealt with.

Hm. They used to be +2 gloves. Stupid yellow draconians. I switched to them after the dex gloves hit -1. At this point it's probably time to switch back.

There's 5 speed potions I can buy. That's probably a good idea, yeah.

I would add that GDA can be good if you are able to enchant it a lot... and that would mean that you saved your ?enchant armour for a long time, since GDA are often available only in Zot...
And that is not a good idea

GDA can be useful, but note I said a +0 GDA is useless. heavy armour is only useful because it can be well-enchanted. if you had a +8 GDA it could be ok.

GDA in particular has the problem of being rare and very heavy, so you usually should be putting scrolls into something else before you get and want to wear it. (and if you weren't with Trog, the spellcasting penalty would be bad. I think the EV penalties would be worse for a MiBe, since they have better dex and dodging). It also takes a lot of scrolls to get the AC benefit, and you have aux armours that need them too. All this combines to make GDA usually not good. (it can be a bit better for say OgBe, for having fewer options and fewer aux slots and more str).

Well, that was certainly my most boring orb run ever. Might as well not even have bothered with that extra preparation. Didn't see a single Pan lord or anything else even remotely challenging.
