General tips: if you start as an elementalist, conjurer, etc., use your spells to kill things. Don't start training Maces & Flails just because you picked one up. You can certainly hold a weapon to use if you run out of MP (though you're better off running before that happens), but limit your skill training to the skills needed to cast your offensive spells.

If you start as a wizard, learn Call Imp as soon as you hit level 2. Then exploit the hell out of it.

Don't wear unidentified amulets.

Try to use your scrolls sooner. If one asks for an item in your inventory as a target, target potions first. Many potions are absolute life savers early on. The sooner you know what they are, the better.

Rest after fights until your MP and HP are full. Don't try to regen on the go.

If you are playing a wizard, you might want to start by maxing you magic dart (for example, for deep elf wizard it's spellcasting at 5 and conj. at 4, and this way you can learn 2 spells of 2lv and 2 of 3lv when you hit it). Mephitic cloud can confuse anything not resistant to poison, a very useful spell, almost seems to be overpowered. If something is poison resistant and tough use conjure flame, preferably in a tunel. If something hard hitting is in melee range, use blink and confuse it. Looking at your morgue files, I see a death from a worm, just step away from it, it's slow. An ant is quick but a mephitic cloud surely will work. Terence is quite weak but might wear an armour that makes him hard to hurt with a magic dart, so you might confuse him and stab with a dagger, for example or make it possible for him to only move from you into a conjured flame, using a tunnel.

Retreat from a normal speed monster (like Gnoll) if you are wounded or are out of MP. You can run around while waiting for your HP/MP to restore.
Don't melee Giant Gecko when you have MPs, your spells cause more damage (and are ranged) than Short Sword (or almost any other weapon).
Don't wield Club, it is awful weapon and cannot have brands.
You can almost safely use your spells vs normal speed monster which is not adjacent to you, when it's only 1 step away - retreat and go upstairs, then use another stairs to go back to the level.

Oh, and having your AC as high as possible is important for a low level character, so try on robes, they can be enchanted up to +2 even if not glowing/runed. Trying on a glowing/runed leather armour might also be a good idea as casting penalty is low and it can turn out to be something like a +3 leather armour of fire resistance. They also often turn out to be cursed and with a negative enchantment, so having scrolls of remove curse is recomended before trying. Also look out for helmets, gloves, boots, cloaks and bucklers (for normal sized species you need to train shields to 0.9 to nagete it's penalty on casting only if you are wearing a robe/steam dragon armour, in other words things that have 0 EV penalty)

I will definitely try this with my next wizard, and I won't pick up any melee weapons to train myself to either kill it with spells or run. Hopefully won't see any adders, they are faster than me and venomous, ouch :(

How would I know that those skill levels are improving (and then maxing) magic dart? And then how would I know what to shoot for with subsequent spells?

Imps must be better than I realized, I got them in one game and it seemed like they just blinked around while the enemy made a bee line for me. I'll try them again for sure.

First learn all the interface and commands by pressing "?" If you press z you can see what schools do you use and what power your spells have. As for adders, they are pretty weak, if you have enough range and at least 4/5 power of magic dart, you can just cast it until you kill it. At level 2 you can even blink to make things easier.

Anyway, this game is pretty hard and only thing that will help you is probably learning how to play, while dying a lot. Wizard is easiest to play in my opinion, but it still took me a few months to collect 15 runes, so you might consider if it's worth it. :) And even having a lot of experience won't probably save you from frustration and stupid deaths in this game.

That's fine for now to train the right mentality, but afterwards get used to picking up a dagger (it's quick and accurate in exchange for low damage) and using it with 0 skill under appropriate circumstances. Learning what 'appropriate circumstances' are comes from experience.

The game is balanced around the assumption you're immediately putting all your EXP into making your Lv 1 attack spell as strong as possible when you start out. Failure to keep up with the steep 'killing power curve' is the quickest way to die from bad strategy (as opposed to tactics).

Had one game that was a modest improvement, still not sure how much conjurations or fire magic or spellcasting I need to pursue, in this game I pretty much just left all 3 on and went with it, got throw flame hungerless pretty quickly after unlocking it. Didn't get to use conjure flame, had one situation where it would have helped shortly after memorizing it but the monsters were on top of me and I didn't think walking through it myself would be helpful. Seemed like the ice beast was just too strong for me to kill at that point despite investing exclusively in offensive power. Still happy with the mild progress I made. Here's the dump:

Throw flame is a waste of spell slots. I never bother learning it. Also, hungerless is the least of your worries, especially for a level 2 spell.

Conjure flame is really really good for blocking off hallways. Also, some creatures are stupid enough to walk onto it and so if you can tank a turn or two of their damage you'll have them killed. You should learn it ASAP instead of learning throw flame.

You shouldn't be training spellcasting so early: focus only on fire magic and conjuration. You want both a powerful flame tongue and also to get sticky flame castable quickly.

You have 13 spell levels left, and didn't memorize the rest of your starting spells. Inner Flame is a bit odd, but the other two should always be taken. Sticky Flame would prevent ice beast from living.

Conjure Flame needs to be used before the monsters are next to you - since most monsters are the same speed as you you can move to a place where it's useful.

Training all of spc/conj/fire is OK, I might use focus on conj/fire.

I've been in your situation. Keep with the deep elf fire elementalists, they're built for casting, and learn all magic skills quickly.

Consider sticky flame a fiery poison. Smack something with it and run away, most monsters in the early dungeon can be killed with one sticky flame. Be careful if they're faster than you. You can check this by right clicking the monster, and if the info screen says fast or extremely you'll still get hit sometimes while running away.

Your experience shouldn't be stretched too thin in this build, but spellcasting should take a back seat in the early dungeon. Spell hunger won't kill you, but not being able to kill the other guys hard enough will. I like to train conjurations a little more than fire magic, because conjurations is a more versatile school, but it's important that they're both high. The game averages your skill to determine how strong the spell is, so having 8 in one and 1 in the other isn't doing you much good. (Someone smarter than me confirm this, please.)

When you see a monster that's dangerous try to lure him back into explored territory by running away once he notices you. It sucks to waste all your MP on 2 gnolls just to find out that there were 5 more just out of your line of sight.

Crawl is a game of incremental victories, you have to take what you can get and know that your next characters will be better.

According to what?

Quick testing in wizard mode is showing it's actually doing less damage per-cast to ogres than flame tongue when below power 30. Above power 30 it's killing them in about 4 turns, while flame tongue takes about 6. That's 2 more mp which could have been used on a conjure flame. And by the time you reach power 30 you can already memorize sticky flame.

Am I missing something?

I suggest using throw flame in game instead of trying to use it on spreadsheets and calculators. It will be much easier to see why it is a good spell if you actually try to use it.

I use it past lair on almost all my FEs.

I always use throw flame until things get into range, Look at it this way, for an extra MP it gives you a couple shots *more* before the critter gets to you. Yes, it's less effective at short range, but it's not like you're *required* to use only one spell to kill stuff, and after all the game for spellcasters in general is "don't let it touch you"

On the other hand it's usually the first thing I forget once I've gotten fireball or one of the other high level long range fire conjurations online.

It's also pretty nice to Inner flame a rat at max range, and then throw fire it to blow it up and take out it's neighbors, to do the same with a short range spell is more risky unless you're also using conjure flame, which takes up even more MP.

Throw Flame has better range (starting the fight earlier enables you to end it earlier) and against packs of monsters the decreased accuracy becomes less of a factor. Miss opp 1, hit opp 2 who was next on your "to-kill" list anyway.

I haven't tried out Vehumet with his new spell-gifting system. Does it lead to problems for FE's not having enough spell levels free at some point?

Not really. With Vehumet I train spellcasting a bit more than I otherwise would (which is not much), and usually travel with an amnesia scroll or two. It's also important to remember you don't need to take all of his spells. I think my last vehumet game I took 6 of the 15 spells.

Although it should be noted that DE could learn every spell Vehumet offered without too major of a strain on the xp budget. I think the situation where you'd actually want to would be pretty rare though. I was able to learn every spell offered except for spectral weapon (no longer a Veh spell) and delayed fireball by putting spellcasting at 33% and leaving it there until the final gift.
