YASD - Crystal ball of fixation

Hello everyone, I am a newbie, played only 2 or 3 different class/race combinations so far.
This was one of my best chars, I was able to make my way to Lair , then did 2 stupid mistakes -- tried to ID a crystall ball (never found it before). It was a crystal ball of fixation. Strange things happened -- my ghost appeared, slicing me while I was paralyzed. I had a plenty of options (scrolls, potions), but was in panic and screwed up. Funny thing -- in this dangerous situation I've pressed the buttons like a hurricane, in seconds it was over.

As a Merfolk Transmuter, I've specialized in polearms fighting and some magic. Can you please review my skills/spells choice? (I'm not confident in it). Maybe I should try another class/race combinations? (I've learned couple of things about fighters and transmuters so far)

What tactics should I apply? I die often when I'm not concentrated/already tired.

I play stable version, should I try playing trunk? There is no compiled package for my Linux distro, do I have to compile it myself?

One of the biggest points of transmuter is blade hands, which is based around unarmed combat skill. So you probably should of gone unarmed instead of polearms.
You should definately play on trunk if you can, but I have no idea about linux so can't help you there.
I wouldn't reccomend playing when you're tired if you're at all attatched to a character, but more importantly don't ever panic, the game is not on a timer. If you get into trouble you can even just save the game and come back to it later if you can't seem to find a way out right then, you might find one later. Also don't be stingy, you're probably not going to take all your consumables with you when you take the orb out, so use them whenever you think they might help.

Other people have covered the playing stuff earlier, but... building trunk on linux is very easy, and you should. The instructions are with the download :)

(Also, the dying while not concentrating or tired thing is universal!)
