it is the opposite of bad? pity you'll have to train stabbing more (as a separate skill) though, if you want to poke-stab things.

I dunno man, not likely a very good idea, unless you figure you want to keep that trident for a good part of the game.

You're a living species, so you have to be full in order just to wield it, then if you want to change to something else - it will require that you be full once more, to re-wield it after.
You're going to have to put some decent points to get it going at a good rate, with your aptitudes, and maybe you'd rather be putting those points into something that will help you survive better - at least till you can establish yourself and start clearing the Lair with confidence.
The game is still early for you, I would drop it at my depot for later considerations. And stay with the stealth, stab, and hexes game for now.

It really depends on what your plans are for this character.
If you'd say more concerning that, then we'd be able to say something more specific.

It'd be a good near-late game transition. Make yourself a proper stabber for now so you can breeze through Lair. Ideally, wait until you have some kind of summoning so you can poke while something else tanks for you. Training polearms right now would be a bad idea.

It's a pretty good idea. Technically you could do trident stabs, but you also might find (as I have) that you don't need to stab anything when you have one of the best possible weapons in the game on d:8. You also have ashenzari should you ever wish to reskill. Please consider removing the ring of ice.

I think confusion + trident would work fine. Though having higher dex and stabbing would work better with a dagger + EH/invisibility, imo.

I actually made the weapon switch about midway through lair, which was quite a bad idea because suddenly my sleepstabs became crap and as well as my melee (should've gotten at least 10 polearms first). But I had summoning capability (ice beast at first, then shadow creatures) so nothing could kill me anyway. Then I got to minimum delay and melee became very impresive, it's really been a fair trade though EW has been pretty scarce. I'm pretty disappointed with mass confusion, seems like anytime I want to use it I can just use enslavement instead. Perhaps I just don't get it, but I'll probably tear out the page and get some necro for haunt. I was about to ask if I should switch to the +2 FDA that margie dropped but then I remembered that ozo's wouldn't work with it.

Of course sleepstabs are crap with a trident, it's confusion that must be used. I think FDA is better than OA, but you need to train armour a lot, so a leather armour(such as yours) or a MDA + ozo's is a simpler and cheaper solution. Mass Confusion is only worth using at the max power, I think or at least 100+

Mass Confusion is good when there are 2 or more monsters you'd like to confuse - ideally when there is a pile. Enslave the ones that resist. Other trick, is to turn Invisible, make a lot of noise to draw a mob, then Mass Confuse the whole lot. Summoning type monsters can get killed by their own minions too. It's good in the Orcish Mines, Elven Halls, Vaults, Abyss, Hell, Pandemonium, and especially Ziggurats.

Sleeping stabs always do more damage than confusion stabs, no matter what the weapon, confusion stabs can be done multiple times, so might be situationally more useful because of that.

Well, it's what I meant. It's just that a trident doesn't get a huge stabbing damage bonus unlike a dagger and the multiplier is twice as low, which concludes to not being able to kill a tough monster in one stab, so what's left is to confuse and do multiple pokes.

Ah, the way I read your post it seemed to imply that you should do a confusion stab instead of a sleeping stab (rather than in addition to)

Some other ways to get multiple stabs:
Paralysis
Petrification
Distraction (i.e. use summoned critters/allies)
Invisibility
Nets

And while Trident's stabs aren't nearly as good as dagger stabs, they aren't exactly awful, they get the same bonus as long blades.
