CIP - KoBe

I've decided that after however many months of playing dungeon crawl, I'd quite like to win so I thought I'd pick one of the easier combinations and see how I get on. I'm doing OK with this character, although he has been as deep as D16 and I've not come across the lair... I suspect it was one a much earlier level that I skipped because it was full of electric eels which I'm not really sure how to deal with. I guess I better go back and find it because things are getting tough now (at one point I forgot about that hydras grow more heads when you cut them off, and so I bezerked an 8-header and carried on hacking away until he had 5 more heads and I decided I better get away) and I could do with a break.

Look at all those wands you have! And needles! THOSE are for dealing with early eels. Use wands of fire or fireball to create clouds of steam so no more that one have you on your field of view, or just use that wand of draining, they completely destroy eels. Any other wand will do great too.

Also take off that ring of ice. You can put it on when you encounter some ice beasts or other ice creatures, but IMO having constant rF- is not a very good idea.

You seem to berserk a lot. Maybe too often. Stop training short blades, at least for now. As you can see in Ctrl-O or in your dump, the Lair entrance is somewhere on D:8-13.

You probably can stop training Short Blades. 19 is way past min delay. Instead, train up Evo or Slings to improve your ranged, or perhaps stealth if you want to go for stabber instead.

Btw, I think the 0, 6 sabre is better than the short sword you're wielding now. Also why are you wearing ring of ice? It gives you rF-. ID your other ring, it's probably better.

Yes, go back and look for the Lair entrance. Kill eels with wands or other ranged. BiA would also work. Or go do Orc, since you've already found the entrance.

Btw u seem to rely on Berserk as your main panic button. Probably not a good idea since you're vulnerable once berserk ends. Eventually that's going to kill you. Trogs hand and BiA are better. Don't worry about burning piety, there are always more stuff to kill.

I died at XL17 in Orc:4 when a High Priest overwhelmed me with demons. Oh well, I learned a lot.

Maybe I was a bit trigger happy with bezerking but that was because a) Kobolds can always eat chunks so the food cost wasn't an issue and b) this was the first time I've played a Kobold so I was bezerking a lot of monsters that I didn't need to... just part of the learning curve.

So is there no real advantage to training Short Blades beyond level 12-14? I think next time I'll build up more stealth early on as I would have had a better chance against that high priest if he hadn't seen me coming. In hindsight I should have just found something else to do i.e. a few levels of swamp whilst I got a bit better.

Orc High Priests see invisible so it is hard to surprise them. Passwall is much safer but it does not work with Trog. Coincidentally I lost my last character to summons of Orc High Priest while berserking too so it is not a good idea to berserk with summoners around (my Orc Priest summoned Sun Demon before dying and I could not even escape).

There's not *no* point in raising Short blades past 12-14, but there's "very little point" at that point you've maxed your weapon speed, and you're only raising your damage by a percentage of your weapon's base damage, which is very very low for short blades. You get only slightly less damage by raising fighting, and fighting gives you hit points.

Once you get short blades to around 12 you should be looking at other long term ways to do damage to bigger, better armoured critters down the line and training towards them. (Whether that's stabbing, ranged weapon, a different bigger melee weapon, spells, etc. etc.)
