YAVP - Ghoul Death Monk
My second win. I added ghouls to my roster of characters, because they could clean up some early ghosts without leaving their own, but I also wanted to win with one, as they seemed fun. I had some trouble choosing a god, because undead are forbidden from worshipping a few, I didn't want to branch out into spellcasting too much and the warrior gods demand corpses, which are sorely needed in the early game to heal quickly. Finally, I decided to go with Yredelemnul, because even with animating stuff, I would be left with enough meat to keep the ghoulish cravings satisfied. Though, I was still worried that Yred might be a hassle with herding of his gifts, but he turned out great.
Yredelemnul is a really fun god, even though I rarely used his higher abilties. Still, undead teams were quite good for help with problematic monsters like hydras and while I was a bit stingy with the more powerful stuff (or rather, usually didn't need their extra punch), I liked them - Saint Roka didn't feel as threatening when his powerful attacks were mirrored to him; in tough situations where my character was one against many, drain life + animate dead quickly turned the tide (though I've needed it only once or twice).
Only enslave soul seemed subpar. Not only the resultant disembodied soul wasn't all that more powerful (or at least lasting) than Yredelemnul's gifts (tried it out on Norbert), but apparently killing an enslaved guy does not yield any experience. All in all, this seemed a rather crappy payoff for all the costs involved and hoops you have to jump through while using the power. I dared not trying it on Saint Roka, because experience seemed a more valuable resource.
All in all, this character was great fun to play from the moment he got his first power from Yred. It was also quite easy, though that could also be attributed to good luck in early finds (boots of running, ring of Shaolin, great randart cloaks all in shops, wand of hasting from first acquirement).
