YASD: DgAM

I spent much time thinking about god for AM (Oka prohibits Enslavement, Fedhas is tricky with Inner Flame) and decided to use none with steel bolts in mind.
Yet I overestimated ability of Dg to melee at 0 skill and subsequently I am out of bolts now and have troubles killing Gnolls/Orc Priests/Orc Wizards. Please advise which weapon would be the best.
I started training some SBlades but I am not sure it is a good idea because there is no 2h short blade and I still hope to use crossbow later.

As crossbow user I was going to use a 2-handed weapon but the best 2-handed maces cannot be used by Dg :( Maybe I will switch to Slings if I find many steel bullets.

The best 2-handed maces for normal races are better than the best 2-handed axes / polearms / long blades on many characters. This is because:
a) they exist, even branded, without worshipping Trog or (ha!) Okawaru or waiting until v:5 or d:22.
b) 20 skill is a lot less than 24/26

Great Maces are great, spread the word. If somebody commits the 'quicker blade' that has 13 base damage, 0.4 base delay and can only be used by small races, that shouldn't affect your decisions to use sblades or not on other characters. Similarly Ogres clubs shouldn't stop you from using M&F.

M&F also crosstrains to Staves if you find a lajatang you want to use before you have 20 Maces skill, and lajatang is probably the best melee weapon for a Dg who uses crossbows mostly.

I should also add that weapons you have now should usually influence you a lot more than weapons you want later.

I will train Maces then. I was afraid I would not find a Great Mace (I am not sure where I can find chances for a weapon) but at least I have a reaching whip.

Yes, this is why I started training short blades. It is not often when you find a +3,+4 short sword lying on the ground.

You are underestimating the huge benefit corona gives. Choose a powerful weapon that has terrible accuracy. Short blades and whips are the exact opposite of this. Good choices include halberds, scimitars, and morningstars. You can avoid training weapon skill entirely and just go fighting.

Here's something to show how much I used corona, which for the first 16 levels is pretty much the number of enemies I killed using untrained melee weapons:

This is not true. You lose some piety, but it is a minuscule amount so long as you don't use your slaves as death fodder.

I try to use Corona as often as I can but I forget about it even vs invisible monsters :(
I started the character to get some fun so I was going to use Enslavement heavily.

The big thing about corona is it means you miss with fewer shots early on, so you lose fewer bolts. It is very important to use it a lot early on.

If you aren't going to worship oka or trog (obviously Dg cannot) you also have to be adaptable if you happen to get unlucky with ammo.

Died to a Wight. 2 Wights were killed by Enslavement and this one was lightly wounded when I started fighting it so I expected an easy win. I should start reading messages when fighting if I want to win :) Great Mace could kill it.
