YASD: Mottled DrIE^Veh - Stupid Fat Wiglaf

Mottled Draconians are sweet. This is the first one I've had in a very long time, and the first one I've had since I had a clue what I was doing. Anyway, I've gotten past Lair and I need to make a decision about my spells. (Incidentally I didn't know Lair had an ending with a gate to Hell.)

I've only got 2 scrolls of amnesia, and Vehumet is offering Ozocubu's Refrigeration so I need to clear up some spell levels to learn it before he offers something else. I've been focusing on Ice and Air skill-wise because they have pretty good synergy and I've got books that have Lightning Bolt, Tornado, Freezing Cloud and PCloud, so Air is going to be useful to me. I think the obvious choices to forget are PArrow and OoD, both of which are pretty useless to me at the moment. If/when I get around to getting some Poison skill, that will help with PCloud and make PArrow useful, but Conjuration is probably more broadly useful and I can probably live without PCloud and PArrow if need be.

IMO get rid of OOD, keep PArrow because it's super awesome, and train Conj. A lot. And a little poison afterwards. Note that refrigeration is not that great without rC. A good way for you to get rC if you don't find it is staff acquirement.

Got to D:18 and didn't want to deal with Frances yet so I've gone back up to check out Orc. I got rid of OOD in favor of Refrigeration, but I've hardly used it since I still haven't found any rC+ items. One of the times I did I wasn't wearing my amulet of conservation and froze my last heal wounds pot. Fortunately I found a wand since then.

I had to forget Summon Ice Beast to learn Bolt of Cold when Vehumet offered it, but I'm thinking about relearning it now since I have 6 free spell levels and I'm not too worried about missing any more of his spells since I can buy a book of Annihilations (well, 2 technically) in Orc:1. As long as there's not something irresistably good and more than about 1000 gold in the Orc:4 shops it's a no-brainer to buy that. Between it and the book of Sky and the book of Clouds I should have access to about every spell I could foreseeably want except Haste, and Vehumet won't offer that anyway.

This is the farthest I've made it with a primary caster. I'm really enjoying being able to severely hurt most things by the time they can hurt me. And when they get close enough to hurt me I'm not totally afraid to get into melee with OA and CS and a decent lajatang. It's a good time. The phial of floods is fun too. Much more useful than the old elemental evokers.

Edit: I'm planning to train Evocations some once I get a bit more Poison for PArrow. I've got a CBoE stashed to go with the phial, so I figure it's worth at least some investment. Then probably on to more Ice and Conj.

I was doing pretty well. Bought the Book of Annihilations because Orc:4 shops were full of garbage. At least as far as the stuff I could use went. Cleared out Orc and first two levels of Elf, then made it down to D:22 but got killed by Wiglaf and his dumb hat. My own fault a million times over. I hit him with a Freezing Cloud then PArrowed him a couple of times, but he must have been wearing something with rC+ because he was resisting the cloud damage and the Bolt of Cold I threw in there. He also used his large shield to block every PArrow I tried.

Then I failed to realize just how hard he could hit when he was all geeked up on Okawaru. I was running with Swiftness but he was keeping up while hasted. I figured I could blink either when I saw the stairs or when I got hit one more time. I should've just blinked and then seen if I could keep my lead and blinked again if necessary. I swear I'm determined to die to everything at least once before I win.

As an FYI, Sonja has absolutely horrible MR. 8 IIRC which means she is particularly vulnerable to paralyze, slow, polymorph, confuse, etc.

Funnily enough, Wiglaf and Mennas are the only two you listed that have killed me. I am insanely paranoid about Mennas and Norris however. Mara too, although Ive had a couple times where I caught him sleeping with a stabber.

Mara is mostly the only unique I'm still really afraid of. Nessos/Sonja can be annoying if I'm worshipping chei and it's hard for me to get to melee, but you can usually just blow some piety on slouch if you have accumulated enough piety by then. Killing boris is practically a minigame for me at this point, I enjoy repeatedly sending him back to the grave. I'm up to 4 kills in a single game now ;)
