Only been one day since my OpTm of Yredelemnul win and I already felt like starting a new character. I've wanted to make this combo for a while. Immediately I can't help but recognize how much easier the early game is as a Merfolk than an Octopode. This is actually my first attempt at that build and I'm already at level 15 without dying once. I've gotten crappy gear and crappy books, but I'm still doing well regardless. I haven't used any of Fedhas' abilities, but I'm excited to pop a ton of Oklob plants on a tough floor. I think Freeze might be the most useful level 1 spell I've ever used, save for maybe Summon Butterflies. It remained useful throughout the Lair. Even Hydra's weren't that tough. I'd just pop Ozocubu's Armour and then hit them with throw icicle until they died. Even if they got into melee range, the armour would prevent me from taking too much damage. I must have killed at least 6 this way.

I'll probably learn the remaining spells from the starting book. Not sure why I haven't yet. They just don't seem immediately useful.

Re: CIP: MfIE of Fedhas Madash (Cleared the Lair)

I suggest you to create some wandering mushrooms, they can save your life some day. The combo is very powerful indeed, my MfIE of Fedhas died in ZoT5 because I saved "save" folder and didn't want it to win :) Train some Stabbing, wandering mushrooms confuse target with every attack. So far you are playing a Dg :)

Edit: Fedhas' piety does not decay so if you are at 6 stars, you can safely create some mushrooms.

Re: CIP: MfIE of Fedhas Madash (Cleared the Lair)

While they'd still be useful at this point, mushrooms really shine when you've just earned 1* piety as in droves they make the hardest part of the game (earlygame) much easier.

Start using Rain and Sunlight - note the latter can be spammed (and shows invisible monsters). Experiment with blowing up corpses (don't stand near) and evolving a ballistomycete. Orc will get you a good polearm (glaive/bardiche).

Re: CIP: MfIE of Fedhas Madash (Cleared the Lair)

Started training stabbing as you suggested but still haven't made a mushroom. I've been letting the giant spores do the confusing instead. Its so easy to keep a steady flow of them. Just got to be careful they arent too close. Sunlight has proven useful agaibdt unseen horrors and rain helped me escape an otherwise overwhelming situation. It also helped mr extinguish sticky flame before it burned any scrolls. I hate sticky flame so I cant tell you how awesome that was. I also got a +3 +3 Glaivr of freezing from the ice cave.

Left Orc 4 for later because Saint Roka is there and tons of ranged attackers and I have no repel missiles.

If you're meleeing, which I tend to as an IE, Condensation Shield is obviously handy. Rolling with Ice Beasts is great, and I've found they remain very helpful till late game at least; they have an excellent long duration and are pretty sturdy (except against fire). If you haven't found a use for Throw Frost already then don't bother; it's the cheap early ranged attack and is generally the first spell I forget.

Re: CIP: MfIE of Fedhas Madash (Cleared the Lair)

Also if/when you get freezing cloud, ice beasts are immune to it's damage, so they can keep critters inside a freezing cloud and prevent them from charging you instead, it's great to use them as blockers to let freezing cloud do more damage, even if the critter wouldn't take much damage from the ice beasts themselves.

They are also immune to bolt of cold, so you can stand behind them and fire through down corridors.

Also ice beasts last a REALLY long time, it's pretty easy to summon a couple well before combat. So yeah, they stay useful tactically for a long time.

I've seen a game where Ice Beasts were used in Tomb 3 to get curses.

I'm aware of that. I just haven't evolved one. I just don't feel like using the Piety of Fruit for it.

In case anyone is counting, I've gotten 3 Gain Dexterity potions. which is pretty cool. I cleared Shoals and Spider to 4, although I didn't do much on Spider 4 when I saw that Jorgrun and Rupert were down there. I'll deal with them much later. I had a very close call to a Kraken, but barely made it out alive. I was overconfident. Planning on taking Dungeon to 20 and then exploring Vaults to 4. Still waiting for a nice Bardiche.

Good point. Its a shame Fedhas doesn't have four other abilities besides Evolution that could justify him as my God choice... =P

Reproduction doesn't cost piety or fruit either and I use that like it's going out of style.

Even if all of his abilities cost piety AND fruit, that doesn't change anything. I said I don't feel like creating wandering mushrooms because I don't feel like spending piety or fruit on that particular ability. The fact that the other abilities may or may not require piety or fruit is entirely irrelevant. (even though two of the abilities require neither) I use the abilities that appeal to me and not the ones that don't.

I just found your question about why I chose to use Fedhas was a bit strange considering I've been using his other four abilities religiously. (harhar)

Innate Abilities, Weirdness & Mutations

You revert to your normal form in water.
You are very nimble and swift while swimming.
You are agile (Dex +3).

I planned on clearing through D:20 before tackling the first 4 Vaults floors, but Frederick appeared on D:20, blasted me with Iron Shot for about half my HP, so I promptly left that floor. Vaults are next. I'd love to come across bolt of cold, man. Throw Icicle is still surprisingly effective, so I'm not too stressed about it.

Re: CIP: MfIE of Fedhas Madash (Starting the Vaults)

Reproduction does cost piety because it destroys corpses which would give you piety. I am piety-maniac too so I understand your feelings, that's why I wrote about non-decaying piety and 6 stars. You are wasting your piety by not using piety-paid god abilities. 200 piety +3 piety = 200 piety. 200 piety + wandering mushroom + 3 piety = 200 piety. The same 200 piety in the end but you have a wandering muchroom in the latter case.

Re: CIP: MfIE of Fedhas Madash (Starting the Vaults)

well the other thing with Fedhas piety is that it's literally only useful for spending on god abilities, so being at 6* piety is no different from being at, say, 4* (or 1*) unless you actually use your abilities.

Re: CIP: MfIE of Fedhas Madash (Starting the Vaults)

Haha jeez, you guys really want me to make a wandering mushroom, huh? All right I'll do it, but like I said, I'm not saving piety. I use other piety based abilities. I'm fond of flooding the area and letting spores wander around.

Innate Abilities, Weirdness & Mutations

You revert to your normal form in water.
You are very nimble and swift while swimming.
You are agile (Dex +3).
You are weak (Str -1).

I hit a point where every branch of the dungeon had nasty uniques. The Dungeon had Frederick and Jory, Crypt had Frances and Agnes, Spider's Nest had Rupert, Lousie and Jorgrun, Vaults had Mennas and Roxanne. I just ended up finishing the Shoals since it was the only place that didn't have a unique. Plus, Shoals:5 never seems to be terribly difficult and being a Merfolk, I figured I'd have an easy time of things. I pretty much did. Ilsuiw was annoying as always, but not too tough. After that I decided I might as well get the second Lair rune from the Spider's Nest. I carefully eliminated Jorgrun, Rupert and then Louise. My MR has gotten high enough that I wasn't too worried about banishment. Got the second rune after killing Azrael along the way. He's really quite vulnerable to ice magic.

After that I went to Crypt and took out Frances and Agnes. That was just the first floor, but then I went to the second and almost immediately found Mara. No thanks. Mara is the most frustrating and dangerous enemy in Dungeon Crawl, not including the extended game, IMO. I dived down to clear through D:23 before going back to D:20 to take out Frederick and explore Jory's "Silence" vault. Now I'm done for the night.

I added some nice spells to my repertoire including Haste, CBlink, and Freezing Cloud. I'd still really like to get Bolt of Cold and, Crawl willing, Ice Storm. I also have almost every kind of dragon armour imaginable. I even found a Pearl Dragon Armour in the Labyrinth. I don't think it would be easy to make use of that on this character though.

Don't you have scrolls of enchant armour? If you decided to stay with robe of resistance, you could enchant it.

I do have a few. I'm not sure if I'm going to stay with it though. I'm wondering if I could pull off a more AC based armour like FDA, or MDA.

I would go with FDA. You have rC+ amulet to compensate, besides FDA would allow you to use a ring of Ice while still having rF+ and rC+.

Okay, I just checked and I have 8 scrolls of enchant armour. I suppose now is a good time to decide what I want to wear. How badly would a MDA and a FDA affect my spellcasting?

I suggest you to use wizmode to check spell failure rates. The formulae are quite complicated.

Hmm, I've never used Wizmode. Could you instruct me how to start? I don't see it on the startup menu.

Re: CIP: MfIE of Fedhas Madash (2 runes)

Start a new game (you don't want to wizmode your current character and invalidate it). If you were playing online, I'd just download the offline client for this (get the same version).

Once in the game type & to get the wizmode menu. I think the first time you do this you get the warning that it won't count as a win, etc. Once you get the "Enter wizmode command" dialogue just press ? to see what all the options are.

You'll want to set this test character's level, stats and skills to be the same as your current character's, plus any relevant gear that you want to include in the comparison. Of course, the spells as well. (This is all explained in the &? menu. To get a spell, use &o: and type the spell name -- it'll give you a book with that spell in.) Then just check the spell fail rates.

Re: CIP: MfIE of Fedhas Madash (2 runes)

In v0.12, MDA won't significantly affect your spell success rates. FDA is another story and until you reach 9 Str it'll weigh you down more than normal: go find some scale mail and put it on to see exactly how much it'd weigh you down by (FDA has the same base EV penalty as scale mail).

Re: CIP: MfIE of Fedhas Madash (2 runes)

I just equipped scale mail and it hit my spells too hard. It would have been nice to wear that pearl dragon armour, but I went with Mottled instead. Barely affected any of my spell cast rates. I got it to +6 and I have an enchant armour scroll to spare. Gonna finish the dungeon and then tackle the Crypt. 3 floors to go.

Annotations
Crypt:4 Margery

Innate Abilities, Weirdness & Mutations

You revert to your normal form in water.
You are very nimble and swift while swimming.
You are agile (Dex +3).
You are weak (Str -1).

...ouch

Margery should have been an easy kill, but she caught me with my pants down. I had just finished a fight with Boris and then some Skeletal Warriors. I Cblinked out of her LOS and near the stairs. Unfortunately, I stepped onto the stairs the moment she appeared in LOS. I foolishly tried to ascend them and she nuked me before I could get up. Guh. She hit hard...

Re: CIP: MfIE of Fedhas Madash (2 runes)

Yeah, this is why I don't walk around with rF-, it's too easy for stuff to just kill you without a second thought, and too many things do or can sling fire spells. Just not worth the risk.

Re: CIP: MfIE of Fedhas Madash (2 runes)

I forgot I had the ring of ice on. It was just a careless death.
