Complete list of species/background abbreviations

After having seen a few too many people saying things like "OcWi" and "MeTr," I decided that it might be useful to have a central location listing every species/background abbreviation. Most of them are straightforward, but there are a few that people consistently use incorrectly. Incorrect abbreviations aren't a huge deal, but when people use the correct ones adds clarity and frustrates me less.

Commonly incorrect species:
  Code:
Demigod - Dg
Demonspawn - Ds
Merfolk - Mf
Octopode - Op
Vampire - Vp

Commonly incorrect backgrounds:
  Code:
Conjurer - Cj
Transmuter - Tm
Wanderer - Wn
Warper - Wr
Wizard - Wz

Species:
  Code:
Barachi - Ba
Centaur - Ce
Deep Dwarf - DD
Deep Elf - DE
Demigod - Dg
Demonspawn - Ds
Draconian - Dr
Felid - Fe
Formicid - Fo
Ghoul - Gh
Gnoll - Gn
Gargoyle - Gr
Halfling - Ha
Hill Orc - HO
Human - Hu
Kobold - Ko
Merfolk - Mf
Minotaur - Mi
Mummy - Mu
Naga - Na
Octopode - Op
Ogre - Og
Spriggan - Sp
Tengu - Te
Troll - Tr
Vampire - Vp
Vine Stalker - VS

Backgrounds:
  Code:
Abyssal Knight - AK
Air Elementalist - AE
Arcane Marksman - AM
Artificer - Ar
Assassin - As
Berserker - Be
Chaos Knight - CK
Conjurer - Cj
Earth Elementalist - EE
Enchanter - En
Fighter - Fi
Fire Elementalist - FE
Gladiator - Gl
Hunter - Hu
Ice Elementalist - IE
Monk - Mo
Necromancer - Ne
Skald - Sk
Summoner - Su
Transmuter - Tm
Venom Mage - VM
Wanderer - Wn
Warper - Wr
Wizard - Wz

Removed species and backgrounds:
  Code:
Death Knight - DK
Djinn - Dj
Healer - He
High Elf - HE
Lava Orc - LO
Sludge Elf - SE
Priest - Pr
Stalker - St

What are the rules that makes an abbreviation correct or incorrect, because they seem to be arbitrary?

Obviously it's the first letter of each word if it's two or more words, but otherwise is it the first two letters or the first letter of the first two syllables?

For example, Octopode is Op because those are on the syllables.
Spriggan is Sp because those are the first two letters, presumably because it has 3 syllables.

The rule has nothing to do with vowels because Centaur is Ce even though if you went by syllable, it'd be Ct, so why wouldn't Wanderer be Wa and not Wn?

The rules are "whatever the devs choose." Presumably it's usually what sounds best or what's most logical; in the example you gave with wanderer, it is probably wn and not wa because warper also starts with wa and because wa sounds dumb.

(also, spriggan has two syllables)

Usually I think of how I might abbreviate it if it were on a license plate, and I tend to be right. But yeah, if you're not sure, make one, lose, and see what the score screen lists it as. that's correct, even if it makes no sense. That's why we can have FeFE, HOMo, DECK, and a few other funny named combos.

That would have to be a DECK of Nemelex, right?

It kinda defeats the purpose of being a CK, right?

Being a CK isn't about _purpose_ really.

This should definitely go on the Wiki once we can edit it again.

little known fact: the abbreviations are chosen first by using the first letter, then the second letter is defined after one properly calculated round of `eenie meenie miney moe.` During the rhyme, the first letter is omitted; in other words, the Ogre acronym's second letter is determined by the letters "gre" as dictated by the children's scientific method of choice. This is why, if Sarah Palin ever became a race, she would be called a "Sr" instead or "SP" or "SA" if she became a class

OP needs to be updated to include Vine Stalkers and Formicids. Pretty please with sugar ontop?

Edited/updated the OP. Left in some of the (fairly) recently removed species and backgrounds, with a note, though if people think I should take those out, let me know. Added VS and Fo, and changed Grotesk --> Gargoyle.

Let me know if you notice any mistakes. Thanks!

Spoiler: show
Now that the metadiscussion of trolling, etc., has died down, I moved those posts to Suggestions and Criticisms thread. Don't need that stuff on a sticky page that is handy for quick reference.

I would add a "removed species and backgrounds" section.

Also I would have made a new thread based on this one and linked here, simply because I dislike the idea of editing the post of an inactive member, but it isn't really a big deal.

(Assuming the edited Blade post is here to stay, I would PM Blade and describe the edits so he won't be confused if he comes back.)

A minor detail: "class" is incorrect, the correct term is "background".

I'm so mad. Why the HECK can't I win with a High Elf Chaos Knight??

I don't have much luck with Tengu Artificers either, which brings a TEAr to my eye.

If you want to start a thread over in CYC or (more seriously) in the Suggestions and Criticism forum questioning these abbreviations, you are more than welcome to do so.

I am locking this thread. If you see needed additions or misspellings, etc., please PM me directly. Thanks!
