CIP-->YASD! HuFi TSO

Hey all :) After reaching XL 21 with my MiBe, i've struggling to reach that result with no avail for my second week of Crawl.
After an enormous struggle, and an average death at XL:6 for an insane number of characters, i managed to reach XL 22 with my HuFi of TSO, who has been slowly shaped as a Paladin.

I escaped death a couple of times, but my most bitter moments were especially two:

1) When i lost around 30 scrolls to a efreet named Azrael and his fire minion by being completely careless, and thinking i was wearing my conservation amulet. (And ignoring somehow the messages that told me the scrolls were being burnt. Blind?)

2) When i made TSO rage so hard by using a wand of draining 5-6 times while fighting a huge number of slimes in a narrow tunnel and using a saber of venom both for the same reason: i didn't want the slimes to corrode my armor, and i forgot completely TSO deprecates poison and draining.
So i passed thousands and thousands of turns at negative piety (If that does even exist) from ****. Sigh.
At least i noticed TSO doesn't actively punish.

Edit 2:
Alright, i got owned in Shoals, it was my first time trying that. I completely underestimated it. I got sorrounded by harpies, merfolks and sea snakes. It's useless to say i thought harpies were much less annoying.
Went once again under penance by killing Mennas. I thought i could kill hostile angels. Maybe with some Daevas in Shoals i could have survived, oh well.
And it was a bad idea to upgrade before finishing the char, i got kind of confused.

Edit 1: Forgot to mention i got my first rune, and it's my first time surviving the abyss. (Been there twice, the first time has been truly a nightmare, TSO had to save me once or twice, i don't really remember.)

Slime creatures don't corrode armor. And penance is not the same thing as negative piety. If you ever reach zero piety, you are excommunicated.
Your weapon is terrible. Find a demon whip and have TSO bless it.
Why on earth are you carrying around 4 scrolls of enchant armour?

Oh yeah i meant red jellies!
Well, i have no idea how much TSO was angry, but i remember the message i read on religion screen was quite morethreatening than usual. Still more than 10k turns seemed a lot to me!

Anyway in the sheet i have everything of value on me just because i went to pick them up to post the char sheet here, i dropped most of that consumable stuff again in D:10!
So the weapon sucks? I thought +6 +7 and speed was nice. Guess it's not.

Well +6/+7 and speed is nice, but a hammer is one of the worst mace types there is, so it barely compensates.

if you had a good ring of slaying and something with +Dam, then I guess such a hammer would be ok... But in your case an eveningstar would be ideal, or a demon whip as blacksheep says, but it doesn't have a good strength weighting (only 20%), but it's easier to find... I think I'd manage to find an eveningstar and have enough enchant + vorpalize scrolls. I mean it could be blessed, but wouldn't it be nice to dammage more types of enemies?

I have just analyzed source code.
With Str 25 and Dex 13 the following happens:
1) For weapon with Str weight 0:
calc_stat_to_dam_base() returns 19 (25+(13-25)*10/20)
player_stat_modify_damage multiplies damage by (78+2*random2(19-11))/78 which on average results in 8/78 increase (slightly more than 10%)

2) For weapon with Str weight 10:
calc_stat_to_dam_base() returns 25 (25+(13-25)*0/20)
player_stat_modify_damage multiplies damage by (78+2*random2(25-11))/78 which on average results in 15/78 increase (slightly less than 20%).

The difference between 1 and 2 is less than 10% (7/78), almost irrelevant indeed.

uuh, well I'm not that knowledgeable about melee ralated stuff, but what's the point in this str weighting then. If it doesn't affect damage much, then sacred scourge is indeed a better weapon, looking at the speed of it's attack.

It's 100%. 10 is max possible value which corresponds to 100%.

so what's this 7/78 value... it doesn't make sense to me. And to my previous question.. what's the point in str weigh... I thought the damage is quite proportional to it. Does it mean that 100% str weigh of giant spiked club doesn't give so much of advantage against, say, a tripple sword?

7/78 is the bonus multipler from stat. Here is full code, you can see that stat adds some bonus to 78 and then the value is divided by 78.

So if you use a weapon with 11 base damage, it will be increased to 13 (if str weight is 10) and to 12 (if str weight is 0) provided you get average rolls. Not a big deal actually but this value is later modified by fighting/weapon etc so finally it can be 39 vs 36 or something like that.

in short it's extremely rare that you should care about the strength weighting of particular weapons (kind of an exception for ranged combat, where str actually matters for every weapon type), and for this reason crawl doesn't even tell you they exist any more

anyway you probably want a spiked flail for now, use a blessed demon whip or an eveningstar if you come across one of those.

alternatively turn off shields and drop the one you have and use a great mace but probably that's not really what this character wants to do

eveningstar seems like a nice weapon anyway. it's roughly 30% slower, but deals like 20-25% more damage(I'm guessing from sandmans numbers from above), but the more damage you deal, the more goes through higher AC. Considering roleplaying I'd go with a sacred scourge for TSO and an eveningstar for,say, Okawaru.

It's a common phenomenon in code development, especially in open source that has a long history like crawl. You can come across code ('features') that should really be crowbar'd out because it's obsolete and/or irrelevant but nobody has gotten round to doing it as it's low priority and must be done carefully in case it compromises the stability of the program. Exactly why that Str weighting was written for melee is beyond my knowledge, but given the above it's not hard to guess a few reasons.

Base weapon type is the most important detail of all. For a hammer to be 'endgame worthy', it would need something like +18 on its damage modifier or have some really unusual property like the shillelagh. That hammer with that brand was good in the pre-Lair portion of the game. It's a shiny toy now.

Since you're on v0.11, you are constrained to looking for a demon whip (to turn into a sacred scourge through TSO blessing) or an evening star. The latter is extremely rare, the former you may need to prise off the fingers of a balrug or Hell-faction unique. Personally, I'd take off the shield and use a great mace for a while until I have one of those two 'endgame 1h mace' weapons.

Oh and please identify those scrolls. There's no reason to have that many unidentified scrolls at this point in the game. You mentioned your scrolls burning so I assume you don't have many ID scrolls left, but still - scroll-ID those unknown potions too.

Thank you all for your answers.

In this walkthrough i haven't found many identify scrolls, no idea why, and even though i lost a lot of scrolls, none of them was of identify. Now i dropped most of my stuff in D:10, waiting for identify scrolls, but i have found 2 or 3 of them. (Now i reached XL 23, 80%.)

By the way, should i upgrade my crawl version? And my char can be imported?

You can upgrade by overwriting files in the same directory you installed crawl to. Then you will not need to import the char, it will be done automatically

Upgrading a major version means you can't import. Upgrading a minor version (i.e. trunk versions) does let you import.

Actually some versions you can (0.9->0.10), some you can't (0.10->0.11). Haven't heard about 0.12 though.

Even when you can't import, you can finish your current guys then copy the morgue folder and high scores so the score table will be there.

I upgraded a character from 0.7 to 0.10... I don't know what the rules are :)

Also.. Yes more 10 points of Strength AND Dex is about 10% more damage, which fighting and weapon skills are then applied to. (a bit more but that's a close enough approximation for most people)

If your weapon and fighting are both 27, then you're looking at approximately 300% more damage in general, which means 30% more damage from 10 higher Strength AND Dex, which isn't a lot considering you only get 9 bonus stat points to allocate throughout your character's lifetime.

But, given the choice between two weapons which are otherwise roughly equivalent, you might as well pick the one with a higher STR weighting if you have a high STR compared to DEX, and a low STR weighting if you have a lower STR than DEX.
