Vlad the VpEn^Kiku [CiP]

Yet another generic character. This is the last of the old .10 character I'd like to finish before moving on to the latest release. I found a dagger of pain lying on the ground, so I asked Kiku for a Necronomicon and learned Haunt. I've been raising Summoning for a while now, in order to be able to use it reliably. I stab most targets, shift to fighting with Pain if it's too weak to bother putting to sleep or I can't do it, and if the target is also immune to pain I use the quickblade (whose drain brand is most likely going to be useless). In order to deal with the Sphinxes from Tomb I swapped the regular Confuse with the mass version, it's a nice crowd control but a bit on the expensive side to deal with a lone monster.

I'm now cleaning the Lair sub-branches before getting ready to grab the runes. I'm not really sure where I should be putting my experience. Also I was thinking I should learn Levitation (or Flight) for Shoals, because rings of levitation are not reliable (and can't be extended! lost a good character to that once). I was thinking of handling dangerous Zot monsters (like OoF) with Haunt and Shadow Creatures which is very strong there.
I heard that the golden rune was easier than the silver one for a Kikuite, but this has NOT been my experience. Not sure if I should really bother with Tomb or not.

That wasn't very helpful ...

I know this is a very generic character that most forumites must be bored with, but it's my first time getting a Vampire to the Vaults, or a Kiku-ite in the deep Dungeon. And if I can win with that guy, I'll improve my Streak record to 3!
Right now my main problems are armour and skill selection. For equipment the problem is that I haven't really found anything good : robes of MR and rF, leather of rF and troll, a -1 cloak of MR. I have artifact gloves ( +1 pair of gloves of Impatience (worn) {+Inv rPois MR} ) whose egos are mostly useless since I'm a bloodless vampire with Invisibility spell and several pieces of artifact MR jewelry, but no other magical gloves so they're the default choice. No branded helmet, or magical boots. Only 3 ?ea over the entire Dungeon, so if I bring the MR cloak to +2 or the troll leather to +5 I'll be fresh out. Should I read the ?acquirement for armor? TLA isn't the best but the AC is better than the other choices and I could use the regen when I chug my only !blood to heal (healing while Very Thirsty/Near Bloodless isn't very fast). I'm pretty annoyed by my cloak being corroded and I'd like to improve that, but MR is definitely not the best ego for me and I don't have lots of scrolls to spare.

As for skill selection, I would normally train Charms now, but I have not found Haste anywhere ; I could still train it to be ready to use it as soon I as find it, but that doesn't strike me as great idea. Fighting & Dodging are obvious choices since they are always useful ; I'd normally chose Fighting over Dodging now since it's significantly lower level but as a Bloodless vamp it's better to avoid getting hit than having more HPs so I'm not sure. Hexes would give me more Mass Confuse spell power, which can be mighty useful. Similarly Necro would give me more Haunt spell power and better Kiku abilities.

As for my travel plans, I'm going to do Orc (I just noticed I had forgotten to do it), then Swamp:5 rune, then D:27, then the 3rd rune (probably silver).

acquiring armour seems fine, as long as you have lots of ?recharging. Since you plan to stay bloodless you should have lots of heal wound charges, so if you don't I'd acquire wand hoping for more.

The rest of your plans all sound fine - you really should be able to grab the golden rune without too much trouble, but I don't remember too many details of how I did it early as a Kiku worshipper other than 'I had dispel undead' and probably 'teleport on tomb:2'.

edit: the reason I can't remember is because that didn't happen, it was a different dieselrobin character - he had to get the golden rune after the orb of zot, so it was mostly teleporting with some fog/disjunction/dispel/ddoor maybe. The one who had to do early tomb died before getting that far.

I burned 3 ?acquirement, which got me :
+2 Gloves {Int -4}
+2 Gloves {+Rage} (not terribly useful to a bloodless Vp as far as I can tell)
-1 Cloak {Int+2}

So ... yeah. Int+2 is better than MR when you already have multiple sources of it, I guess, and my cloak was already -1. +2 Gloves without useful ego might be more useful than +1 MR gloves too. So it's pathetic, but not entirely useless. Which says a lot about the gear I'm currently using.
With neither of the two armour MR boost I am "incredibly resistant", and I go up to "uncannily" with a single one. I'm not sure what level of MR I really want, and if I want "uncanny" resistance I'll have to chose between sacrificing Int+2 or 1 point of AC. I'm thinking the Int is the more important of the two.

So I found this: "the +9 pearl Dragon armour of Eternal Vigilance {rC+, rN+}".
In a shop. At over 18k golds. Yeah ... And since it's in a bazaar, there's no way I'll ever be able to get it even if I could afford it one day.

Other things I might want to have (and that I can actually afford) are a Ring of cTele at 900 and a +5,+5 ring of Slaying at 1500. I already have the cBlink spell, and I'm probably going to find a ring of cTele eventually, so I'm not sure it's worth buying. The ring of Slaying is nice, but I already have a +5,+6 one one one hand, and a Ring of the Mage {Wiz,MR, Int+3} on ther other so I'm not sure how often I'd use it.
I currently have a bit over 4k golds, do you think I should buy either of those?

I wouldn't recommend PDA on a stabber no matter what. EV penalties, even minor ones, eat into your stealth. If I were you I would find a nice robe even instead of that leather, which isn't really doing all that much for you. Are there any robes of resistance or resist fire in the dungeon?

We'd need a full dump to give more accurate advice, but perhaps the better question is: what would you want to save money for anyway? Just buy both rings, the cTele will be useful for controlling teleports and double slaying rings can be made to work for you.

There was a few things that I wanted to buy (notably a couple books for spells like cBlink) but I ended up finding most of it in a D:26 vault. So there's this glowing Steam Dragon Armour at 1k and pretty much nothing else, now that I think about it. It would mostly be for a Zig, or finding another shop. I don't think I have ever seen a shop or Bazaar in extended or Zot. Since you can't serve Zin either, the only use for gold now is entering Zigs. But Zigs keep showing up in Pan which also spawns gold so go spend your entire fortune here in this bazaar. Tomb:3 will give you some more money as well. The only way you can see a shop now would be to make a bazaar portal from a high-powered Trowel card. That's not going to happen unless you switch to Nemelex and scum him like crazy.

Now then, looking at your dump the slaying ring may not be of much use to you unless you invest in a long blades and get some awesome 2h big sword. But you've already picked a good alternate path of Army Commander. Get Simulacrum and laugh as Kiku provides you with OP corpses in Dis/Coc/Tar.

The cTele ring is useful, especially in that castle layout of Cerebov's floor where you need to precisely teleport into the 7 metal rooms with no doors to get the loot. Gamble on that steam dragon armour, see if it's good or not.

yes, slaying is especially good on fast weapons. I don't think you'll need a big sword.

It is, but the amount of damage done per hit will be mitigated by AC. It'd be good for low~medium AC opponents but you'll need to do something else for high AC targets. Since you had already invested in summonings, you may as well let your army do the attacking.

If you want more concrete numbers, a total of +20 dmg from slaying bonus/weapon enchantments would have been the point where I'd recommend you just melee things yourself with a quick blade.

I bought both of those rings, and I certainly don't regret it. the cTele ring saved my bacon when I stumbled upon an Ancient Lich which proceeded to reduce me to almost no HPs with a couple of Iron Bolts. I managed to hide in a small room but I had no way out, so I used a ?tele with the ring to land on the stairs up, and I was able to easily rest on V:7.
Still on V:8, one of the main probelm were the Shadow Dragons, since they are immune to pain (or my damaging spells) and can foil my Enchanter tricks. So I put this second slaying ring instead of the artifact one and cut them to ribbons.

I think that the only thing left now is to try the extended. Tomb:3 should probably be first, but I don't know if I should try to do Slime Pits at all, let alone this early. My equipment is already not very good so I'm afraid of corrosion, and I'm not really sure what offensive would work well there, and I hate doing the Pits without Dig. Although I might be able to solve that problem and I should learn not to sweat that sort of detail.

Actually hmm, when was that commit that changed slaying bonus? 0.10 may still have had the old form before it got nerfed. I'm guessing even under the new slaying system, +10 + 6~9 from weapon enchantment would be considered enough to make a qBlade character viable.

0.8 had the old, 0.10 had the new, I think it was 0.10 were it got changed to new slaying.

Hmm, I tried that out in fsim, comparing with a +8 vorpal lajatang. Conditions: 15 allSkill, vs Brimestone Fiend (15 AC) and vs Dispater (40 AC), with and without +10/+10 slaying.

Without slaying and against regular enemies, the vorpal qblade does a good job though the lajatang does better. Against high AC (Dispater), the qblade really sucks with no slaying bonuses.

With +10 dmg from slaying (in addition to being +8 enchanted), the qblade actually matches the lajatang for effective damage on Dispater and outperforms the lajatang against the Fiend.

Conclusion: a decent doping of slaying on a highly enchanted qblade makes it effective against high AC opponents too, proving me wrong.

15 AC is absurdly high for an enemy.

Qblades are good up to ~12 AC (stone giants). This is roughly everything you run into in the game.

Also comparing to the best basetype weapon in the game isn't exactly fair....

Yeah it wasn't the fairest of tests and it's rather meaningless anyway as both these weapons are pretty rare. You're probably not going to see either one unless you've invested in the correct skill and gotten the acquirement code to give it to you. Well, I guess Lajatangs are less rare than qblades.

Oh yeah, I do have one problem: not a single source of Haste in this game beyond a few potions of Speed. I was thinking that I could try my luck in the Slime loot vault.
Any advice on how to tackle this branch (or on what to do instead)?

Your quick blade, pain dagger and steam dragno armour are all enchanted to the point where they can't be corroded by acid. Find some expendable cloak, boots and helm then just do it like a melee dude would using your +10 slaying. As a bonus, you have summons to act as temporary chaffs while you approach shining eyes and acid blobs.

I was thinking I should improve my spell list.
I haven't found a single Haste book and Swiftness only in a book shop. On the other hand since I don't think I can find any new shop I probably should just go ahead and buy that Book of Burglary.
I also think that now that I have enough Translocation for cBlink and since I am a dodge-based character, I should learn Phase Shift. Silence may have been useful before, but now that I'm looking at the extended, I don't think it's a good idea anymore.

The problem would be getting enough spell slots for those. I only have one right now and since Spc is at 20 getting more the old-fashioned way is probably going to take a lot of time. So I was looking at spell I should probably forget. First, I don't think Pain is really useful at that point in the game. Then I've barely used Agony, since the targets it would be effective against die quickly enough to my Pain weapon. And then there's Animate Dead, which I have used quite a lot, but whose effectiveness seriously decreases now that I'm done with the Dungeon and the Vauls ; it's still really neat to animate an entire Kiku-gifted stack of corpses, but maybe Simulacrum would be enough for those?

All those spells you listed plus ensorcelled hibernation. They can all be discarded - EH because all the seroius threats have way more MR than the power cap on that spell.

But not all of them need to go. There's no reason to get rid of a spell unless it's to replace it by a more useful one. So unless there's something else you think I'm going to need, I don't think I should burn enough scrolls/books to get rid of all of them.

Speaking of usefulness, EH is not something I use to take out serious threats, but mid-level annoyances that would otherwise take much more than 2 hits to take down.

I was wondering if Silence and Darkness were worth learning. Also if I end up getting rid of Animate Dead (for Haste for example), is recall still going to be useful? I've been parking undead minions in a corner of the map to recall them when I need a screen, but if I only make short duration summons with Simulacrums and Haunt, that might not be useful anymore.

I like Darkness, but it's basically the same as the first level of the Nightstalker mutation. So if you find that useful, go for it. 7 spell levels is kind of a lot to get for it though.

when I was using darkness to assist in Tomb for a SpEn, I mostly just cast it before going downstairs - in particular, when repeatedly re-entering tomb:3 to reduce the number of greater mummies and priests in view and make it more likely that Dispel Undead would work.

I was thinking that Darkness makes it less likely for summons to get in your way. The spell range becomes closer to the LoS range and there are less summonners in the area at any given time. Summons blocking the line of fire were my main problem with using DU to clear Tomb:3.

I didn't like DU, especially in Tomb. Maybe because I tried it for a hybrid with Ice Storm.

Yeah, when I tried Tomb with a Fire Storming DS I learned DU thinking it'd be useful. Not so much. The lvl 9 nukes are way more effective when you can deal with their downsides.

Of course you can get a powerful DU much earlier than a reliable Storm spell, so there's that.

Killed TRJ by spamming Haunt and a couple of Simulacrums at max range. Stayed there thanks to cBlink, because this $#|% can't be shaken off by Swiftness. Who had the great idea to make this thing Speed 14? That was not nice. Not that it's anything new for Crawl...
No loot of value down there. So much for that.

I am now going to try my luck in the Tomb.
