YASD: SEIE

I've been playing a bunch of SEIE of Kiku, though I haven't gotten one much past lair. Right when I get to the point where I'm feeling not so fragile I die to hubris. This time it was Nergalle's draining attack. It was just bad play, I was stair dancing between Orc:2 and Orc:3 and she followed me up.

This game I went for Simulacrum, which is absolutely awesome. I got it online in Lair, used it to clear down do Lair:7, then a scroll of acquirement gave me a vampiric lajatang... I was so happy to get this awesome rare weapon and I think it's better than simulacrum. Regardless, I died moments later. But for those few minutes I had it, it really rocked.

Does this character look ok, skill/item-wise or is there something I'm doing wrong? After getting staves to 14 I would have worked on dodging and fighting for a bit, then try for haunt. Does this seem right? Any tips on playing this kind of hybrid elementalist of kiku? Is there a better combo for what I'm trying to do, or is this fine and I just need to not die foolishly?

even when I am playing naga caster (which has +30% hp compared to sludge elf) I get 10 in fighting by the end of lair. And now when you consider +1 aptitude for fighting for SE it is easy to say that you could have 12/13 in fighting when you go into the ork
also I dont really see why this

also you had a wand of hasting and was not hasted when fighting nergalie...

10 fighting grants 15 hp to 12 XL character, it is 2 shots of vamp lajatang. I think Level 13.3 Staves was a very good idea.

well, when you have 72 hp, 15 is quite good.
The thing is, this character has no defences.
Level 2.8 Dodging
Level 5.0 Fighting

And since simulacrum and ice magic was online , i would first get some defences before cranching into the killing staff with weapons.

I don't see simulacrum in the spell list. Yes, I agree about Dodging. SE is not a Mi so it should not melee dangerous things so early even with vamp lajatang.

Your skill management was quite good - probably I'd have raised them in a similar ways. While it's true hybrids get better in later game, I'm pretty sure your character could validly go in melee: defences were quite formidable for that point of the game - 21 ac/16ev/16sh - 72 hp isn't so bad by that point - other races like ko, ke and fe can be melee and have worse hp pool too - and a vampiric latjang is a wonderful weapon to use.

Anyway. you made two big mistakes:

1) Long term: You specialized in necromancy (13 point - good thing generally speaking), even choosing Kiku as God, but you didn't learn any of the strong spell he grants! You should have memorized at least animate dead or twisted resurrection - the former is strong all the game with Kiku, the latter is boring to use but rapes everything up to vaults - but also agony, if available. Nergalle could be tough for your character, but she would have died very quickly if surrounded by 10 orc zombies or 5 large abominations - also consider more allies you have, least is probable enemies will target you.

2) Short term: you were full of consumables. !agility, !might and haste could have made that fight trivial or, at least, saved your life. Use consumables next time, a txt morgue can't use it anymore anyway.

Thanks for the advice. Actually I got pretty unlucky with Kiku gifts this game, I didn't get twisted resurrection or sublimination of blood, but still no excuse for not using my consumables properly. I'm still a pretty new player and I think I just got really excited by the lajatang as being "better" than simulacrum, but this was not true for the place I was in the game. Sometimes its so hard in crawl to just relax a bit and remember that just because it's a sticky situation doesn't mean it's an RTS game...

The really great lajatang threw me off this game. I was planning on pain branding a lajatang but got the vampiric and thought "oh yeah! my end game weapon!" but really wasn't ready to wield it as such.

Otherwise, this is my first experience with kiku worshipers; Psyieye commonly lauds kiku as one of his top god choices, but I've never really understood until rolling this combo and getting sublimination of blood plus other goodies online.

What are your favorite necromancy spells? What are the essential ones? You get so many spells with kiku so quickly that it's hard for me to decide which ones I really need. Simulacrum seems like the natural choice for an IE, and I shouldn't have amnesia'd it when I got that great weapon, rather I should have used it until the weapon was ready to be wielded.

In a side note, I think I used consumables way better than I ever have in this game, up until the point I died. It's hard to judge as crawl has a fine line between "waste" and "necessity", but experience is telling me "smoke 'em if you got 'em" is the general line to take, as the only thing you are really hoarding in crawl is the orb.

Good combo for me with kiku are venom mage - that background have problems kiku solves and letting zombies tank while enemies are killed by poisonous cloud is always funny - ice elementalist - simulacrum sinergy, plus undead are easily replaceable and resist cold so also using ozocubu or freezing cloud when necessary is a good strategy - warpers - they lack meaning of offence, kiku provide them early on (focus on leathal infusion if gifted) and others too, as Kiku is a very strong god in 3 runes game.

About necro spells: most of them are strong, some of them are overpowered, very few are bad. Seriosly, it's faster to say what are the most useless spells at any point of the game: control undead (if dispel is available), Cigotuvi's Degeneration, bolt of draining. Necromutation isn't often really necessary and totally overestimated.

*All* other spells are good; how useful they may be heavily depend on character build and the moment of the game (e.g. twisted resurrection is totally overpowered with kiku early on, but after mid game rapidly become obsolete), the best way you have to learn is to try directly.

Whoa now, I take great personal offense(well, not really) at your condemnation of Cigotuvi's and Bold of Draining as useless.

Cigotuvi's can instantly, permanently, and reliably nullify a living threat. Sure, you don't use it as your primary source of killing stuff, but it's like Banish-lite for Necromancers . Pulsating Lumps are laughably slow, so they also clog up the maneuvering of pack monsters- it's great for manipulating large fights in your favor, especially if you're a hybrid.

And as for Bolt of Draining, it's irresistible for 90% of of the game, does more damage than expected thanks to the draining effect, and is easily available on a tight XP budget to necromancers, considering it's element-neutral and even training Conjurations for it is optional. Consider that Bolt of Draining can shoot right through your undead minions, and even functions as a minor, permanent debuff, which makes hit-and-run tactics viable(if that's your thing).
