So my questions are:
  • Do I start training Staves to get the +0,+7 latajang going (w/no shield) or stick with my 2 nice tridents?
  • I have 13 potions of curing out of 18 needed for the trove. Keep diving for those?
  • Build up my Slings a little more to get more sling-related gifts?

Unless you have another demon trident stashed somewhere, you have one nice trident. Given that you have 15 Shields already and a shield of resistance, I'd stick with the demon trident. The vampiric lajatang is pretty awesome, though, and wouldn't take long to switch to since you'd only need 9 levels plus Heroism to reach min. delay.

I wouldn't worry about trying to collect enough potions for that trove. Use them as you need them, and if you're playing carefully you should eventually accumulate 18 naturally. At that point you might want to wait until you have a few more before opening the trove.

I don't like getting swamped with ammo gifts unless I'm playing a character whose central focus is missile attacks. In your case, I'd look to pick up some spells instead of going heavy on Slings.

Stop putting points into Strength.

Edit: Also, your ring of Churcheaxe {+Rage EV+2 Str+3} is a much better choice to wear around than the ring of see Invis. You can always swap when you're around something visible.

A DEMON trident is very different to a mundane trident. The demon trident doesn't have a great brand for extended but it'll do if you just want a 3-rune win. Just wait out, you'll get a better demon trident before Zot. The mundane trident is worthless.

For once, someone asks when they have a decent shield AND they have the shield skill appropriately trained. Don't bother with the vampiric lajatang. As much as it's one of the best weapons you may hope to find, that's only true if it showed up before you put all your EXP elsewhere. You can win without that lajatang. You're going to need the EXP for getting Haste online. Yes, that's while wearing plate and with crappy aptitudes - you can afford it and it'll serve you better. Crawl is trying to kill you by tempting you with a good item. Don't let it succeed.

Forget that trove even exists until you have 30 potions of curing. The monsters were designed assuming you always have some available on hand. Troves are like Oka gifts: chances are it'll be crap so don't go all out to satisfy the entry requirements. Again, crawl is trying to kill you by temptation.

Thanks very much for the great answers. I have never considered getting spells, but it worth a shot. I do have 2 Ice Manuals stashed, although no low level spell books at the moment; the jellies seemed to have gotten to them.

It's funny, I put off training shield until mid-Lair and was fully trained by end of Orc. Then, and only then, did I find Agnes in V:1 right next to the stairs and just barely beat her for the latajang.

Note that Ice Magic is almost useless for your character, the manuals do not change this, and the only spell schools of interest to you should be Charms and Translocations, in that order. Ice Magic mainly lets you do a different kind of damage at this point (not useful), while Charms increases your primary source of damage and survivability, and Translocations, trained high enough, effectively makes you immortal (Controlled Blink).
