Cip: Mu the Destroyer (MuWz)

Man, screw mummies. They're so emblematic of exactly what I *don't* want in a crawl character. They start off the game with odds stacked horribly against them: 'useless' rN+++, rTorment, rMutation; inability to recover HP rapidly or utilize any utility potions at all, unnecessary hungerlessness (since at that stage hunger is virtually a non-issue), Bad aptitudes compounded by slow EXP gain (so no matter what your build is it's 'as-likely-as-not' to have a higher %-fail for longer). And best of all? rF- so that even under perfect play you're always vulnerable to a one-shot death from an orc-wizard/centaur from D:1-4.

But then, if you play them carefully and you get lucky, then it's all the benefits of lichform which start paying off extremely early. Hell, if you go the sif path you could be seeing these benefits at D:5. If you're willing to start-scum until you get a rod or a sif altar on D:1-3 you can virtually guarantee a successful Lair and more!


In other words, playing a Mummy (to me) never feels like I played well and earned my success. Either I'm dealt a "non-lucky" opening between D:1-5 and I die, or I'm dealt a lucky hand to get me past the early game and the rest of the game ends up being a breeze. Small wonder then that I dont roll mummies very often since I dont find them satisfying, win or lose.


Anyways; I felt like ascending a mummy so I started rolling them. This was the outcome

Like I said - it feels like startscumming even though I'm obviously not. I'm trying to remember what mandatory lucky breaks I had earlier this game. IIRC there was a couple "<5 hp -but-alive" moments on the first few floors. I'm drawing a blank now, but maybe it was the staff of channeling? Yeah - and that's when I decided that Vehumet's conj/summon help would be far more valuable than sif's mana-channel since I already had the staff.


Still, did do a few things different than my business as usual. Most notably I took Orb of Death which I generally despise. Man, oh man if this isn't a SWEET spel. It's SOOO much more fun than Iron Shot. When I fire an Iron shot and I miss I feel cheated. When I fire an OoD and it misses I at least can SEE that it missed and see where it went instead. And generally I at least get an explosion for my troubles. Also, whereas Iron Shot misses because the game rolls a hidden number and decides to say "fuck you", Orb of Destruction misses because of environmental changes. Therefore, you can increase its accuracy. Finally, my biggest problem with Orb of Destruction has classically been that you kinda have to aim it from close to have a better chance of hitting in many circumstances. . . well Iron Shot is mandatorily at a shitty range - - so Orb of Destruction gives me more flexibility period.
And if you can aim a long-distance shot well enough to connect, then it's extra damage. A lot extra. And no pesky earth-training.
Yeah, you can bet I'll be doing a lot more Orb of Destructioning than Iron Shotting in the future.

I went Ice instead of Fire since I knew I wouldn't have the deep elf's luxury of being able to coast through all of magic in everything, and I needed the utility of a freezing cloud type spell pronto.

Rods are always in a weird space with me. I generally dont get much use out of them for the simple reason that for most my characters they already have better powered (and more hunger-reduced) spells by the time they stumble across them. Then Evo-hungering sucks badly. Next there's the limited mana reserve - generally getting 2-3 shots tops of the spell(s) I'm interested in. And worst of all, you need to switch weapons which virtually guarantees you wont have them out in a hotspot.
Well with my Mummy all my old conventional logic kinda fell on its head. Firstly, I was gonna be training evo anyway for channeling/cBall purposes down the road, so it made sense to mess with the rods. Second, hungerlessness is a big yay. Third, unlike my deep elves, I *didn't* have a massive bank of MP since I couldn't train up spellcasting super-fast or benefit from racial bonuses. So the theoretical 10-12 mp expansion of my total casting capacity was very appreciated. Also, 100% reliability is MASSIVE for a mummy! I can't recall how often I used the Deflect Missiles or Cause Fear spell to preserve my limited consumables/MP points and still got great effect even with ~5-10 evo.
I had a pretty wicked thought: If you hang around on a floor for >3k turns OOD monsters start to show up, right? But OOD for floor 1 is gonna be what; like Orc-Knight/Trolls probably. So say you kept restarting till you found a good rod or two -- maybe something with ice storm or a good swarm of medium summons. Level 6 evo-hungering is a non-issue and unlike spellcasting your evocations are guaranteed success from a rod. Keep blink/mephitic as your escapes and you're golden!

Anyway, 3 runes and still kicking. Haven't made up my mind about extended yet. Over the last 3-4 floors of the main dungeon I explored I found hats/armours/gloves with varying rF++ and rC++'s on them, along with the hat of the alchemist. Problem is many of them are negative enchanted artifacts as are the only boots I've found this entire game. This leaves my AC in a lousy place but my resists in an excellent place. I could (almost certainly) clear the extended endgame. I mean, level up my evo to~18-20 and get ice storm properly online and I'm already the equivalent of an ice-storming lich with powerful MP channel, cTele, full resists, and every spell I could be interested in. I just don't know if I actually *want* to take hte time to beat the whole extended; it's kinda redundant at this point. I'll probably pluder Slime or Elf before I make up my mind; so we'll see.

Have you read the MuCK YAVP? Xom gave out a rod and for the next 100k turns or so this was used to overcome frost giants and the like on D:5's OOD timer.

@minmay: Ummm; I'm sure I may have made a mistake or two, but I'm *damn* sure that "Everthing you said is wrong" is just flat out incorrect. I know you play a lot of Mummies, minmay, and I know you're a better cralwer than I am. Hell, you could probably make a Troll Wizard work with your skills, but take a closer look at what I said:

The vast majority of what I posted was my opinion and my SUBJECTIVE reaction to the race and how I *FEEL* they play. This is not wrong - as it takes a special kind of crazy to not know your own damn opinion. Even though there's no need to provide evidence for a subjective feeling, I did so anyway by showing just how my games panned out - with a slew of early deaths until a "lucky-break" that carried me to lvl25+ (and now probably a win).

Still - if there was something more concrete you could show me to make me have an easier time with early game mummies that'd be awesome.

Like, here's a distillation of the more objective points I put forward (rather htan just subjective feelings) leading to my conclusion that a mummy requires a lucky break to survive the early game, even if that luck is just never being fed an enemy it cant handle..
1.) 3d5 dmg with rF- means you can be 1shot by an orc wizard. I dont even need to do the math for a centaur with flaming bow/arrows.
2.) Early rods are good to use on Mummies since high hunger costs mean nothing and guaranteed spell success is hard to come by that early. Hell, rods early on are good on pretty much anyone.
3.) Mummies' rMut, rN+++ and rC are "minimally useful" on the first three dungeon floors where, with the exception of Grinder, Out-of-Depths, and the incredibly unlikely draining-wand, you are hardly gonna face any of them. The most likely being ice beasts for the rC. Their usefulness only really starts picking up around the Lair.
4.) Mummies cannot drink potions, which means NO burst-healing in the early game and typically lasting till the late midgame or even more.
5.) Sif Muna's channeling is DAMN helpful early on and CAN be acquired very early - it's even "more likely than not" to find an altar by D:5/6.
6.) If you scum for Sif-channeling, then just mass imps, you can clear through the Lair with total ease.


I'd be interested to hear your advice.

I don't get the relation between Lichform and Nemelex.
Also, Lichform does have advantages in a 3 runes games, it's simply that they don't outweight their cost due to the spell being so hard to cast. But a mummy doesn't have to wait until she has extended game level of skills to get them, since it's part of the starting package. Of course that doesn't answer "are those advantages really important anyway" question.

My understanding was that Sif Muna protects from miscasts and Lichform protects from spell hunger so Mummy of Sif Muna can spam Ice/Fire Storm earlier than DEWz of Vehumet can.

firestorm also tends to not be castable until very late on mummies because their apts for it are not good

My main concern is Miscast Effect + Spell Hunger.
Fire Storm miscast can cause 3d20 damage (2 miscasts can kill both DE and Mu), Spell Hunger (for example, 550 hunger points for a single Fire Storm, Int 30 * Spellcasting 15 for DE) can get character from Satiated (2601 saturation point) to Starving (<1000) in 3 casts. It is impossible to cast spells at Starving.

PS. I have never played Mummy, it is only theoretically.

I'm with you, Sandman. Yeah; maybe if I were a more patient and analytical player I'd realize that food is something I can accomodate for while casting lvl9 spells...

But no, I find that on average you need to bank on 3 casts of firestorm for kills - two for sufficient damage, and one more for 'shit happens', or miscast effects. If I have to add on top of that the constant need to eat, the hope that I can find sufficient "clean" corpses to work with, and nervousness to cast while nauseated? No thank you, that's a lot of hassle.

Don't get me wrong, I still vote for (generally) getting firestorm active before working on lichform, but I then tend to use it very *very* sparingly. Often while under the effect of brilliance and being powered by gourmand or permafood. Is that working too hard to preserve my permafood in general? Yes. Yes it is.

Do I care? Not a chance. Mummy hungerlessness lets me spam abilities I would otherwise constantly be weighing the pros and cons on, not the least of which is channeling via staff/sif. It also lets me treat lvl6/7 damaging spells as "spam-castable" the moment I have sufficient skills to not fear miscasts, rather than also needing to do the whole mental exercise of: "Is it woth 6mp (vehumet) and choko-level hunger, to use Orb of Destruction against this goblin?" Instead it's fire, channel if desired, awesomesauce!

Sure, you've got -2 aptitudes (apparently that's "average" per minmay), but you're getting lichform benefits without 15-18 levels of necromancy and/or transmutations. Coupled with Vehumet-wizardry-effect you can get reasonably high conjuration/summons castable by Lair, no problem.
