Thanks to the advice of this board and Psieye in particular, I've managed to get my character this far. My only real goal for this character is to clear a Ziggurat(s?) and I would love this boards help. I just want to know what I should be carrying into a Ziggurat since I have almost no experience with them. I did dip into one in desperate search of rMut on one of my other characters, but I only went 10 floors down before finding it and bailing.

Anyway, my main concern is what I should be bringing in. Please list everything you'd advise I bring in, regardless of whether or not I have it in my inventory, as I might have it in my stashes. Of note, I have plenty of recharging, restore abilities, CBoE and the glorious Wucad Mu. I'm also interested in what skills I should be training while I'm in there. What armours and resistances to bring. How much food to carry. Any particular wands I might need. (Disintegration for statues and flame for Silent Specters?) Of course, I'd also like to pick up any nice loot I might find, but I don't want to pack too lightly in hopes of finding good stuff.

It's worth noting that I only have 13 runes and have not gone to Dis or Gehenna yet. This is because the other Hell branches drained my supplies more than I wanted and I was worried that if I completed the remaining branches, I'd be left with insufficient consumables in favor of insignificant skill growth. That said, if you guys strongly advise that I try to build a certain skill, either in Hell, or by scumming Pan, I'm open to any and all advice you can offer. I want to have the best chance.

Lastly, any spells I should learn? I have access to everything. Please and thank you! bestow unto me your accumulated knowledge!

Re: CIP: Help me beat my first ZIggurat!

Wow, nice ring and rather strong character.

I agree with your wand ideas.
I like a few more teleport and healing wands. - After getting into trouble, I have finished (both won and lost) a few Zig floors randomly teleporting and spamming healing wands on myself.

The main things I feel I run short of in Zigs are food, id and remove curse scrolls (depending on build and how much loot I id). Of course, you might get burned and lose scrolls (or potions frozen).

Lately, I've found a lot of CMut potions in zigs.

I suspect the area to branch into is necromancy.
Necromutation, Borgjnor's, and Death's door are useful. I've only used the former much, but hunger-free spamming of spells, torment and mutation resistance are cool. (Although maybe not for holy floors!)

Probably you can lose fireball + delayed fireball, although they are nice for silent spectres.
I'd lose dig and consider losing phase shift.
(The better players might want to correct these!)

Summoning is another option, but it's up to you which direction to take.

My guess is the only floors that will give you much trouble are Pan lord or Mummy floors. Holy word scrolls can help. The other obvious tip is to take advantage of Veh's increased spell range. Position your firestorms such that they also fry the guys who are just out of your field of view. The most annoying case is when you get a single fire-resistant Pan lord charging far ahead of all the rest of the denizens.

Things that surprized me lately are damage-reflecting dwarves and confusing a suppression field for silence.

Good luck!

Edit: Oh, I assumed by "flame" you meant fire, of course.

Re: CIP: Help me beat my first ZIggurat!

Yeah, I'm afraid of Mummy floors towards the end more than anything else. Without Necromutation, it just seems like I'd get smoked fast. Tomb was surprisingly easy for this character, although I was incredibly cautious and stair danced my ass off. I don't think I could get Necromutation castable even if I finished Dis and Gehenna.

So, here's a question about Ziggurat honor. Is it considered a victory if you have to move to the next floor without killing everything?

Re: CIP: Help me beat my first ZIggurat!

Hmmm, so without necromutation, I think torment will be tough. The times I've done that I needed a lot of regeneration. Sure, you might lose HP fast, but that's ok if you can regain them quickly. At least you'll be alive and so can sublimate, regenerate, read holy word, and quaff potions. I suspect Borgj is still worthwhile.
diviton wrote:So, here's a question about Ziggurat honor. Is it considered a victory if you have to move to the next floor without killing everything?

My opinion is no. I think almost any Zig floor would be easy if you just make some noise, then CTele/Blink to the exit. (Although that gets more exciting for -CTele floors.) However, the main goal is really just to not die, and I would say this is a different case from, say, grabbing runes and running.

Anyway, that's a question I've also wondered about, so hopefully someone else will answer!

Re: CIP: Help me beat my first ZIggurat!

Yeah, I feel like it's not a true victory unless I kill everything in the Ziggurat. Just curious about the boards opinion.

I think I might try to get Necromancy up a bit for some of the Necronomicon spells. If it ends up that I have to bail on a zig, those spells could really help me. The Hell effects in Dis aren't as bad as the ones in Tartarus. The main reason I don't want to go there is because I don't want to drain my consumables, but I suppose I can always restock in Pan.

Plus, I'd like to buy some time to get more advice from this nice board. Please? =(

Clearing out Zot:5 (2 player ghosts! Yeesh!) And surprisingly I was ablr to get Necromutation high enough for any spell in the Necronomicon. So the question is, which should I learn for the Zig and if so, what spells do I lose?

Wait, did you clear Zot:5 with rF-?

Edit* Derp! I'm a goof who got rC and rF mixed up.

Re: CIP: Help me beat my first ZIggurat!

No, why do you ask?

I cleared Zot 5 and finished Dis. I hate Gehenna so I'm putting that off for now. I picked up some awful mutations including degeneration and teleportitis so I scummed Pan for a while to get a cMut potion. I found one and shortlu aftrr came across a Ziggurat. It was 12000 and I only had 9000. Probably for the best because arent the more expensive Zigs supposed to be harder?

I think I'm ready to find a Zig though. I just have to decide what I'm bringing along.

I've decided that I'm going to ditch blink and bolt of fire in favor of necromutation since I'm so scared of a mummy floor. I'm also very strongly considering ditching Delayed Fireball/apportation for Borgnjor's Revivification or Death's Door. I'm having trouble figuring out which would be more useful though. I feel like Death's Door would be great since thanks to Wucad Mu, I could get my MP back almost immediately and probably kill everything before it wore off, or at worst, just leave the Ziggurat. Still, Revivification sounds good too. Which should I chose, hmmm?

Well, I'm about to go to Pan in search of a Zig. I appreciate the help of dassem, but it doesn't look like I'm going to get any other advice, so this is what I'm taking with me. I have access to rF+++, rC+++, rN+++ (necromutation), rMut, preservation, clarity, stasis, respectable Int and very high AC for a caster. My spells are all perfectly castable. I also have 14 free item slots for whatever I might find in there, although I hope I'm not packing too lightly. I'm wondering if I should be bringing more potions, but they just weigh so damn much. The speed potions are for when I don't want to risk magical contamination, although I don't know if I should be bringing more restore abilities or curing. I figure I'll find both in Pan and in the Ziggurat. My character isn't that strong, although I have a very high potential for carrying, I'd just have to sacrifice my Int boosts for that, which may end up being necessary.

Here we go...

Re: CIP: Help me beat my first ZIggurat!

Both speed potion and the haste spell glow you the same.
I'd rather not walk around with rC-.. swapping to that rC++ helmet will take a few turns.
Grab a wand of disintegration if you find it.. you might find some nasty statues in Zigs

That is good to now about speed. Thanks.

As for rC-, I'm not as worried about it because ring of flames neutralizes most ice attacks. I only have to worry about ice storm from Pan Lords, although I've never seen that.

And damn it! I forgot the disintegration wand and I meant to take one! I still haven't found a Zig though...

Huzzah! This is the first Ziggurat I've ever completed! As you can see, it wasn't a particularly challenging one. I encountered two Pan Lords in the entire thing, but I never got a "Pan Lord Floor", so that was a relief. I got two mummy floors, but they were both in the first 10 floors of the Zig, so it wasn't a problem. Although, with Necromutation, I feel confident I could have handled one later on. The only scary moment was when I learned what Mirror Damage looks like... Those stupid Deep Dwarves almost killed me. I quickly realized the little icon meant they were reflecting damage, so I tried to only hit the ones without it, but since Fire Storm has such a huge blast radius, I ended up hitting them off screen and I didn't realize even that would reflect back to me. I got to crazy low health, but I managed to kite around the large floor, but I probably did about 3-4 laps around the 24th Zig floor before I could finally pick enough of them off. Other than that, it was mostly smooth sailing and I bit anticlimactic.

Now that my feet are wet, I think I'm going to try and take on some more Zigs. I could easily go for the Orb right now as Zot:5 is cleared and Gehenna probably wouldn't be much of a problem, but I've done that already and raiding Zig's sounds like fun, even if my character goes down in glory.

Not that anyone cares, but I cleared a second Zig!This time I even got a Pan Lord floor with 9 Pan lords on it. This one was even easier, just because I had a better idea of how to handle them. I'm trying to rely less on Wucad Mu and get as much MP as I can from Vehumet's passive restoration. Wucad Mu is seriously broken, so I'd like to be able to beat a Zig without using it.

I've learned not to Fire Storm something the moment I see it, because this results in me needing to cast it more. If I can afford to take another step forward, I have been, since this will allow me to target more enemies, get more MP back and not have to fall back on Wucad Mu. I still had to evoke it a few times, although it's possible I wouldn't have needed to since I never used my potions of magic. Ah well, I'm no longer afraid of Ziggurats. At least not until I get a Pan Lord or Mummy floor on the 27th floor.

Does anyone know if the cost of a Zig entry has any relevance to either the loot quality or enemy difficulty? Or anything at all?

Re: CIP: Help me beat my first ZIggurat!

Yay! Well done!
I recently got a Mummy floor on the 23rd, which was fun.
After that, even Pan Lord floors seem easy. In fact the main risk you'll face now is complacency leading to poor choices. :-)

I've also wondered this. Anyone know?

In my (limited) experience it did not. But there's such a random factor that it's hard to tell.
I also guess that some new creatures have come and gone in trunk. A few versions ago think I got a natural floor that had ghost moths and moths of suppression, which was tough in a different way, but I have not got a similar one since.

My opinion is that there could be some reward at the bottom of a Zig for completing it (besides the normal loot), such as enough gold to tempt you to try another. One way of doing that might be to limit scrolls of acquisition until a guaranteed one at the bottom, or somesuch.
