YAVP - NaFE of Kiku
I felt like playing a melee character that could throw fireballs and maybe have some other spells, so I decided to go ahead with this. I've also wanted to win with a naga for awhile now - they've always been a bit difficult for me, due to their slow speed.
I found playing a naga that engaged in both spells and melee to be a very enjoyable experience. I started out focusing on Conjurations and to a lesser extent Fire Magic. It didn't take too long at all to master the starting book, as Naga seem to have very good aptitudes. I then got some Necromancy, picked up a common trident (which I subsequently gave the Pain brand), and then focused on my defensive skills. Admittedly I probably should have gotten the dodging/fighting first, but I was eager to use a weapon of Pain, as it's something I've never tried before but heard was very good.
It was as good as I had read. Even though the trident itself was fairly common, it became something truly special when I gave it the Pain brand. I started seeing excellent results at around 10 Necromancy, but I pressed on a bit further anyways. It was enough to basically carry me through the mid-game; It tore through pretty much everything it worked on. Fire Magic took more of a back seat during this time, but remained useful. Constriction seems to be really good, and fun to use. It does pretty great damage normally, and it helped me kill enemies that were resistant to my weapon of Pain.
As I progressed into the later game, I switched to a bardiche. With that, slaying, and constriction, I certainly wasn't hurting for damage. I found the Grand Grimoire and picked up Haunt, for a bit of extra firepower. I also found Bolt of Fire towards the end, which was very useful. For escape, I was able to use Swiftness+Haste to negate the Naga's speed penalty. I had Spider Form, but I didn't really like the hit to AC, so I didn't use it much. I had a wand of teleportation for emergencies, and also a ring of teleportation when things looked like they might become urgent in the future. The Evocations was rather quick to get, and the ring was pretty reliable. I didn't have any control teleport, so I made sure I had enough HP before things truly went pear-shaped.
Are there things I could have done better with this run? I admit, although I have some wins under my belt, I still feel I am very much a novice at Crawl. Any tips on what I did wrong or right or should have done would be very appreciated.

I found playing a naga that engaged in both spells and melee to be a very enjoyable experience. I started out focusing on Conjurations and to a lesser extent Fire Magic. It didn't take too long at all to master the starting book, as Naga seem to have very good aptitudes. I then got some Necromancy, picked up a common trident (which I subsequently gave the Pain brand), and then focused on my defensive skills. Admittedly I probably should have gotten the dodging/fighting first, but I was eager to use a weapon of Pain, as it's something I've never tried before but heard was very good.
It was as good as I had read. Even though the trident itself was fairly common, it became something truly special when I gave it the Pain brand. I started seeing excellent results at around 10 Necromancy, but I pressed on a bit further anyways. It was enough to basically carry me through the mid-game; It tore through pretty much everything it worked on. Fire Magic took more of a back seat during this time, but remained useful. Constriction seems to be really good, and fun to use. It does pretty great damage normally, and it helped me kill enemies that were resistant to my weapon of Pain.
As I progressed into the later game, I switched to a bardiche. With that, slaying, and constriction, I certainly wasn't hurting for damage. I found the Grand Grimoire and picked up Haunt, for a bit of extra firepower. I also found Bolt of Fire towards the end, which was very useful. For escape, I was able to use Swiftness+Haste to negate the Naga's speed penalty. I had Spider Form, but I didn't really like the hit to AC, so I didn't use it much. I had a wand of teleportation for emergencies, and also a ring of teleportation when things looked like they might become urgent in the future. The Evocations was rather quick to get, and the ring was pretty reliable. I didn't have any control teleport, so I made sure I had enough HP before things truly went pear-shaped.
Are there things I could have done better with this run? I admit, although I have some wins under my belt, I still feel I am very much a novice at Crawl. Any tips on what I did wrong or right or should have done would be very appreciated.
