CIP: Monstrous DsTm seeking advice

Hello everybody! Longish time crawler (since 0.8), first time poster.
I could really use some advice on this DsTm that started off as a throwaway joke character to let off some steam and ended up holding his (I decided it's a he) own surprisingly well.
Mainly, I have no idea what deity he could worship.

As shown on the dump, he is monstrous, with horns, claws, and Powered by Pain.
I'm hoping for hooves as third body slot facet to go for the whole stereotypical demon look, but talons will do as well.

While I wait for the other tier 2 facet and the tier 3 facet to manifest themselves, PbP already presents a quandary of its own. Or better, not the mutation per se, but the availability of that nice randart plate armour on a character that may be shaping more like a hybrid caster.

Now he is sitting in the temple, about to stash his most precious belongings, learn ice form, identify the remaining scrolls, and to choose a religion (or not yet).
I thought of Kiku (branch into necromancy, ignore the randart plate until very late game or forget it altogether), Makhleb (if he gets Powered by Death would it stack with Gain Health from Killing?), Nemelex (since he is basically turning into a medium sized troll sans the hunger and with better aptitudes) or Ashenzari (always a solid choice).

The point is, I don't know myself what I want him to do or what to expect from such a character. Maybe I should look first for the remaining altars and gain a bunch of levels hoping to receive the other tier 2 facet?

I have little experience with transmuters, the farthest I've ever got one was barely after Lair. Little experience with demonspawns as well. I'm unsure how to proceed with stats and skills.
At the level up I chose str and int without really thinking or planning, since I didn't expect him to even reach the temple.
For skills, I leveled UC up to 5, transmutations to 5, spellcasting to 5, and now I'm focusing UC again up to 12 or so.

I know so many dislike monstrous demonspawns and deem them only a waste of time, but I want to give him a chance and I'd like to see how far I can bring him.

Well, Ash isn't a great choice, mainly because UC means you cant bind your hands (And you can't get bonuses to that skill) and being transformed melds your armor, meaning when you're transformed you don't get the benefit of your armor cursings.

PbP is kinda the opposite of Makelb's healing, it refunds you a little SP when you *take* damage, which is Ok, but really it's only useful later on when you're pumping out lots of spells.

They do both work at the same time though.

If you want to get even *more* monsterous, check out Jyvia, double the beneficial mutations would be a nice longer-term goal, but probably not a good short-term goal.

At this point god-wise, I'd take something that can help keep you alive (that's going to be the challenge) Makhelb's not a bad choice, minor healing and blasty/summon-y invocations, although being a spellcaster you may find spells that fulfill that need better than Mak could, without divesting your exp from it's primary goal.

I'd say either Mak or Nemlex (Although Nemlex is pretty random/risky until his piety's maxed, although using UC you can just sac all the weapons you encounter)an

Chei is also sorta tempting, his stat bumps can turn a monsterous UC user (really any transmuter) into an absolute machine, but in order to take him and not get pwned by the first centaur you see, you'll need to already have: Some sort of ranged attack that can do real damage (spell or weapon) and Repel or deflect missiles castable

Right now you don't have the strength to use that Plate armor, you should if possible, at least pick up a buckler, right now you are a fragile glass cannon and will die pretty darn easily. Maybe find some enchanted leather (or ring mail) too until you can swap for better body armor

Small update: he reached lvl 10, gained another level in PbP, explored another couple of floors and found the remaining altars. Entered an ossuary but left shortly after, since the layout was too open and was getting mobbed by yellow difficulty undead. The rng showed once again its sense of humor in the dungeon, gifting first an amulet of resist corrosion, then placing an oklob plant right by the altar of Makhleb; its only other altar is in one of those tiny islands with an escape hatch, so I have to find either some source of levitation/blinking/invisibility/polymorph or another overflow altar to join its religion. I'll likely go for Fedhas at this point.

Found Lair on D:8, and Orc too, but it was a mimic. I casually noticed for the first time how the ctrl+o overview counted the Orcish Mines staircase as legitimate as long as I didn't realize it was a mimic, that's a nice detail.

Should I start training dodging now, by the way? I get a feeling that both without a ranged/magical attack and either armor or
dodging the character will be terminated with extreme prejudice by the end of Lair.

Oh yes, I phrased that poorly, I meant if he got PbD as the other tier 2 mutation.

He is shaping up quite well. Going very very slowly.

Joined Fedhas, found the first spellbooks and learned any spell that could give escape/utility/survivability, not allowing myself the luxury of being picky when you expect death any other turn. Got shafted once from Lair:5 to 7, had a close call with four blink frogs while in ice form in the open, otherwise no major problems in clearing Lair, the generated ending was evil_forest (rng, now you give me a relatively safe Makhleb altar? Too late!).

Picked up spellcasting again, hungerless spells sure are nice.
Urug back in the dungeon was proving himself quite dangerous as usual, but also not that resilient, so I unwisely berserked him down with an artifact +Rage sabre. It worked. I'm not gonna try the same stunt against Saint Roka on Orc:4, even if I found him without his entourage, he is not to be trifled with.

I'll probably proceed slooowly down to D:18/Vaults staircase or (attempt to) clear the first levels of Swamp and Spider. This is the farthest I've ever been with a transmuter, and I'm having a blast.

I'm surprised not to see Blade Hands in your spell list. With this spell and all those monstrous muts (and desirably more UC training) your damage output should be amazing.

Feeling the flimsiness!
Met Rupert on D:14 who confused me instantly with only meager magic resistance, had to quaff a potion of curing, he paralyzed me but couldn't reach me in time before the effect expired, so I managed to flee back to the stairs and took it as a sign to steer clear from that floor for the moment, and explore the branches first.

Many hairy moments in Swamp 1-4, due to having to juggle the forms to fight and survive.
Gators gave me the hardest time. Confusing Touch proved itself instrumental (and hilarious) against hydras.
By the way, do polymorphed alligators always turn into dragons? Because it happened twice, perhaps it was a coincidence?

Found my first artifact naga barding ever, obviously as a non-naga.

Then went to Spider 1-4, which in hindsight I should have cleared first. Nowhere near as many close calls as in Swamp.
The critters may pack a punch but they are frail, sort of like my character. Didn't need to rely on forms to survive at all, casted Blade Hands occasionally only to speed up the killing to be on the safe side against 3+ spiders.
Found Wiglaf and he died surprisingly easily to standard melee. The true danger has been a ghost moth on the second floor; I'm really thankful for that artifact sabre with sInv, otherwise I would have died.

Headed back to the dungeon to hunt the Vaults staircase, avoided Rupert.. and met Nikola. Luckily, his line of fire was blocked by the creatures summoned by a boggart, trapped behind my shrooms in a one tile wide corridor, and I managed to escape.

Now tackling the first floor of Vaults. I think my luck is starting to run out, but I consider it already an accomplishment to have reached this point.

As for stats, I put all the points on int, for skills 15 UC, 15 fighting, 5~ translocations. I can cast phase shift reliably now, I hope it's worth it.
Also, I got a swamp dragon hide and a mottled dragon hide, I'm debating whether to enchant one of them or wait for a fire dragon hide. Currently still wearing that +0 Steam Dragon Armour.

I was quite comfortable with the damage output at the time, but I indeed learned it shortly after.

For the longest time i thought he was! I guess he managed to scare me.
Usually I have no less than two mushrooms following me all the time. Around mid swamp I had 9.
