I tried ignite poison the first round actually, but it barely scratched her and the greater nagas. Maybe if I had it at full power that would've worked.

It was possibly a mistake learning Fire Storm when Vehumet gave it to you. You may have been better off training up Charms and learning Haste instead of going for more damage - you probably already had enough offensive spells to get you to the endgame.

It's the conundrum with new Veh - I believe there's a patch being work on to resolve the 'I must learn this endgame spell now before the offer expires' issue. As it currently stands, I don't think it was a mistake to learn Fire Storm when it was offered. It WAS a mistake to pump up Conj/Fire to actually cast Fire Storm before getting Haste up.

Thanks for the advice - altho I didn't find that book with Haste in it until well after I was gifted fire storm, I'll remember to give Charms more priority next time.

I'd say that if you're planning on going for 15 runes as a caster you will want a level 9 spell at some point, and in that case it might be worth learning in case you don't find it elsewhere - but if you're just going for the win it's really not necessary, though it can be nice to have. I've fallen into this trap several times myself, and have found that learning a high level spell that I won't be able to cast for many XLs takes up too many slots and gets in the way of learning things that would increase my survivability right now.

Most of the things you would want to use Fire Storm against (orbs of fire, ancient liches, late game uniques etc) could be killed using OOD or Iron Shot, possibly more efficiently than with Fire Storm. It's probably worth getting some earth magic for Iron Shot even as a HE as it's so powerful and versatile. In my opinion, of course.

As a HE, Tornado will get the job done better. But then, I always train bows on a HE, so I get the 'iron shot'-like projectile for 0 mp cost. Yes, arrows alone aren't as reliable for doing burst damage but Tornado+Bows demolishes hostiles.

Bonus: bows have range 8, a lot of dangerous conj spells have less range than this. With swiftness/haste, it's possible to kite scary enemies without letting them cast those dangerous conj spells.

Also, you shouldn't be on Snake:5 at that point in the game. You had all of Vaults plus 7 more levels of D to explore before going for a rune.

Exactly. Runes serve absolutely no purpose until you get to D:27, are able to survive it, and are ready to face Zot:1.

If you're picking them up before that, you're asking for trouble.

Personally I enjoy clearing a branch in one go rather than coming back later for the branch end. There's certainly no reason why an XL:17 character can't clear Snake:$ with care, and the fact that this poster was only killed by an unknown and unexpectedly tough unique goes to prove this. Once you've cleared D:27, Snake:$ should be a pushover and therefore less fun. Branch-hopping should be dealt with by the rune lock anyway ;)

That's fair Mumra, everyone plays for reasons they want to. Yeah; you can clear Swamp/ Snake at XL:15 or less. Hell, you can even get a rune in <10k turns!!! But if you're playing-to-win and not playing to challenge yourself (in a game already renowned for being ridiculously challenging). If you're playing-to-win instead of playing for a highscore. If you're trying to get the first win which LESS THAN 10% of crawl players will probably EVER GET~!

Then *fuck* self-challenge. Do things in the easiest possible manner with the most OP combo and tactic you can reliably use.

My experience has been the same as mumras, though, I've never had trouble before with getting the snake rune relatively early, as long as I had at least rPois. Greater nagas and guardian serpents aren't all that tough and they're easy to lure a few at a time or run away from if things go bad.

I could have done it easily this time too, it was impatience and overconfidence that really got me in the end. That's what makes this game so compelling to me, I have to overcome my own personality flaws in order to win.

I used to opt for doing Lair -> Snake or Lair -> Swamp as long as I had acquired some rPois already. But since then I've taken to doing Orc first, and proceeding down towards Vaults. In fact, Vaults-rune is often my first rune. though really, that has more to do with the fact that thanks to EXP gain and loot gain i've generally found a good spell set and such by then and can cast it reliably...

... and also, that a single forced-tele in Snake:5 or alligator-under-fog has gotten me killed or near-killed enough that I've learned to fear the deep snake/swamp. I guess that's my personality bit :P. I get frustrated by the constant auto-travel stopping in swamp and then accidnetally miss or get swamped (no pun intended) by the many powerful swarming creatures there. And snake:1-4 are usually fine, but snake:5 one unlucky constriction and my reliable "blink-escape" falls victim to mass-snakes.
