YAVP: First Win - Minber2 [was "CIP: MiBe (best so far)"]

I am doing the best I've ever done by far: XL 24 MiBe, cleared D:25, Lair, Orc, Spider, Elf, and currently on V:7. Most monsters are a piece of cake by just whacking them till they die, though I have had a few close calls: got down to 8 HP at the final vault in Elf (thank you BIA meat shields!) and I was able to take out Mennas by berserking and putting on a Dam+7 ring. I have a bunch of stuff in my stash, including the following:

a +0 Crystal Dragon Armor and a +2 Plate mail of rF+
a storm dragon hide
a +4 ring of evasion, +0,+7 ring of slaying, ring {Hunger- Int-2 Dam+4}, and a bunch of other rings
a ton of books, wands, and other misc evokable items, and two rods
other junk I've collected...

If you have any advice, I'd appreciate it! In particular:

Are the skills I am training / have trained so far good? Should I train something else? Dodging?
Am I using the best items that I have? I have been juggling around all those rings and amulets and a case-by-case basis.
After vaults, where should I go?

jewellery: I'd default to +6 protection and Temptation, though Gongaf would be swapped in a lot for the protection.

At this point your skill choices won't matter much. I'd consider picking up Crossbows, or you could put everything into Dodging and more Evocations.

Assuming that you mean you have a 'crystal plate armour', I would wear that and dump enchant armour scrolls into it. You armour skill is high enough that even with no scrolls it would be far superior. If you instead meant a 'pearl dragon armour', well, still wear it but it's a little closer. With the pearl dragon armour train Dodging for sure (and raise Dex at XL 27).

Before Vaults:8 you should clear Crypt unless you're planning to do the extended game and want to save it for a god switch. I'd probably do Shoals first too.

Do you have any other good axes? I'd assume Trog would have given you an antimagic executioner's axe by now. Flaming/freezing are also better than electric on such large weapons.

it's probably worth scroll-IDing that wand too, unless you already know what it is by inference.

I would probably switch out to the Crystal Plate Mail. I think the higher AC will be much better protection than your current armour, and the difference will only get greater as you raise your skill.

I would probably also switch your ring Weichyck out for Temptation. From what I've heard (no personal experience) Contam only gives you glow on remove, and you probably won't need to switch rings much. The Hunger- is only convenient, not particularly helpful for survival, whereas +7 slaying is amazing. rN+ is also not particularly good, and you already have one pip; good enough.

Skilling looks about right. I'd have thrown a good bit less into T&D. Personally, I find anything over about 7 is a waste, as Zot traps aren't too dangerous when you're likely to trip over them. I would definitely raise dodging; Mi have great aptitude for it, and a little EV goes a long way.

As for where to go, I would clear Shoals before touching V:8. V:8 is one of the hardest areas in a 3-rune game, probably tougher than anywhere but Zot 5. I would consider clearing the rest of the dungeon before V:8 as well; D:27 has a similar monster set (ie, lots of dragons, stone giants, etc.) to V:8, and can give you an idea of what to expect.

Shoals isn't very hard till the last level; you'll face a lot of competent ranged attacks, and you'll need that +lev ring a lot. But you should be able to handle it, and your elec axe will cause extra damage to merfolk in the water. Just remember to be over land whenever your levitation is even close to running out, and keep a potion of lev on hand for emergencies. (Mesmorized by a siren over deep water with lev running out...)

Crypt is another possible source of experience. Crypt:1-4 are trivial for a berzerker. Crypt 5 has a lot of loot, but high level casters as well (ancient liches, etc.) which could ruin your day. Of course, you will often find a couple ancient liches in V:8 as well.

tl;dr: For safest approach: do Shoals, Dungeon to 27, and then Crypt:1-4. After that do either Crypt 5, or Vault 8, and then the other. Then, assuming you don't want to try extended, you're ready for Zot.

Your skills are good, if anything they're a tad over-trained (no need for 27 axes). If you plan to stay under Trog, pick up crossbows and dodging. Wear CPA. Oh and you may want to get rid of that blurry vision mutation.

oh, I forgot you're playing 0.11 - so byrel's and my advice to use the Contam ring is bad. Feel free to swap into it for fights, but don't wander around with it on.

Or just use your +0/+7 ring of slaying.

Blurry vision can screw you over if you're trying to read an escape scroll. The difficulty is that you have so many mutations that a cure mutation potion may not get rid of the ones you want. You have some nice mutations too, so you could find yourself in the awkward position of losing the good ones and keeping all the bad ones.

Wand acquirement is generally useful, especially if you haven't yet found wands of teleportation, hasting or healing. If you acquire a staff, you'll be guaranteed a rod, which could offer you a strong ranged attack. I think Trog worshipers are guaranteed a skill manual if they acquire a book, but whether that manual will be of any use is a different question. You've already nearly maxed all the skills a troglodyte needs to train.

I would acquire a rod or two. Ranged attacks can be a remarkable enhancement to your capabilities. I wouldn't bother with curing the blurry vision. Some people rely very heavily on instantaneous scroll reads; if you do, you should do what it takes to get rid of it. Much of that can be done with a bit more caution (knowing there's a chance it won't work) and with heavier reliance on potions and wands.

Particularly with that (very nice!) mutation set, I wouldn't chance it.

Maxwell's armour is risky. It could make you survive things you never otherwise would. Or it could keep you from fleeing and living another day. Generally, the best advise in crawl is to avoid risk; while this is tempting, I would avoid it.

The other problem with blurry vision is you can't ever spot traps until you're about to walk over them, and even then at a penalty. This is not good when Zot traps become more frequent later on.

On a big 2h, antimagic is better then elec in general but you should carry around both and swap out depending on the situation (no point using anti-magic when there are no spellcasters in sight).

Maxwell... a 15-rune win has been done with it but you really need to know what you're doing for it. I would recommend it if you had a haste wand with lots of recharge scrolls.

Thanks again. I decided to put some more points into evoking (now at 10.6) and dodging (19.9).

Now I'm at XL 26 + 95%, have 26 STR, and just found a gold dragon armour. Should I put the extra point in STR to get the armour? I figured it's worth asking since it's going to come up any minute now.

Do you want to stick with Trog and never cast spells (did you burn all your books?) ever? Then switch to GDA. Do you want to switch to TSO, cast spells and go to extended? Then stick to PDA.

Another update. I cleared Shoals, Vaults, Crypt, Vestibule of Hell, and Zot:4. I found a +4 plate {rF+} so that's what I've been using, but I also have a -2 GDA and a +0 PDA in my stash, along with 8 enchant armour scrolls and a bunch of enchant weapon scrolls. I am planning for a 3-rune run, so this was my plan:

Go buy an amulet of resist mutation, since I don't have one.
Buy as many enchant scrolls as are available (only a few)
Buy an acquirement scroll since one is available
Buy as many useful potions and scrolls as are available
Acquire... what, staves (for rods)? I'd prefer jewelry or armour, but I doubt I'd get something better than I already have.
Enchant my plate armour (or should I do GDA or PDA?) and antimagic exec axe as much as possible.
Clear out Zot:5.
Get a bunch of wands of digging and scrolls of blink and teleport.
Grab the orb.
Run for it.

I also have 6 or so potions of mutation that I could gamble with, though that seems unwise. (I have no cure mutations, and I already have mutation resistance 1.)

Any problems with that plan? I figure there's no sense waiting around because I've maxed out all the skills I need, and I'm unlikely to find better equipment before ascending.

... and I've escaped! First win! Zot:5 and escaping was much easier than I thought it would be. When I first grabbed it, I ran into a LOAD of bad-ass guys that nearly killed me, but luckily there was a teleport trap nearby that saved me. After that, only one pandemonium lord showed up during the entire ascension, and he was easy to escape with a potion of swiftness.

One thing I noticed was that I was very careful throughout the game about consumables, including food, and in the end I had like 60 bread/meat rations, about 20 wands, tons of decks, and a bunch of other potions and scrolls sitting in my stash. I'm guessing it's more important to be conservative for both casters and for extended endgames, but I think I can be a little more liberal in using consumables in the future.

In extended, you get more consumables anyway. Arguably, casters need less consumables than melee.
