After killing off a good population of Octopodes (one might call it genocide...) by munching them through my idiocy, I have one another prospective. I sure hope he's durable enough to survive me... If he does survive me, though, he should also aim to tackle extended.

Melee-wise I got a dagger of venom in D:2 which, along with meph, made a lot of encounters up to Lair entrance quite trivial. Ring of rPois, which was later replaced by the randart ring with additional effects, made things even more trivial. I was unlucky to have had Vehumet alter turn up in D:7, which made the training that much delayed, but I think I was also lucky in some other ways (like Baily be lined with deep water, letting me meph away on the poor orcs and picking up their root underwater), so I will have to just work on it.
I haven't put any skill points in any of the melee skills though, and have saved up most of enchant weapon scrolls I found in my stash. While I'm relying on a dagger right now, I am fond of polearms and am very much intrigued in the use of bow/crossbow, but I don't think I have enough strength to be carrying all that ammo. Maybe I can make do with just one or two hundreds :s Maybe flight (if I ever find the book for it anyways) might help with this? I am not sure if I have enough mana either :s

Magic-wise, I have decided to take on Ice and Air, along with Charm and a little bit of Translocation. Ice storm and Tornado are the ultimate goals, but as of now, I just learned throw icicle, which helped me dispatch hydras and spiny frogs in an open terrain. This is new to me as I usually try to dispatch them using freezing cloud, which they seem to simply race past and byte my 8 arms off before much damage is done, never mind kill them. The only problem was the mana cost since I was used to spamming magic dart before this. I will have to manage that somehow. I'll also learn freezing cloud spell anyways, and, with Summon Ice Beast, I hope to get some mileage off of it. I'm also thinking of making use of fireball against things immune to ice. Would fireball do much damage relying solely on conjuration, or would throw icicle deal more damage with it's 60% physical damage?

God-wise, I'm going Vehumet for spells, then switch over either to TSO or Jiyva. I always wanted to work with Jiyva's mutation with my Octopode. On the other hand, mp/hp on kill, angelic companions, and blessing a bow/crossbow do seem quite compelling. I just don't know if I can promise TSO I won't freeze that sleeping or confused Ogre running around in front of me...
I also read an interesting post combining Zin and Tornado (and Disjuction, but I don't think I have that spell in my copy), which seemed very fun...

Skill-wise, I decided to train 3~4 skills at a given time: 1 defensive skill, 1 offensive skill, Conjuration, Spellcasting. Focuses would be on either the defensive skill or the offensive skill unless Conjuration is the offensive skill being trained. This was in hopes to prevent my character from being a glass cannon, as was the case in my previous attempts at this character. Hopefully this way, I'll have enough offensive (mostly spells) power while having enough resilience to survive when my offenses isn't strong enough to dispatch the threat quickly (or when I'm on the run silenced, as was the case in the latest YASD with Mennas in Spider:2)
The problem right now, though, is that I need to train traps but I am not sure which skill to be replaced with. I'm thinking spellcasting...

Any suggestions or comments about this run would be much appreciated :D

My successfully OpWz (viewtopic.php?f=12&t=6528&p=87412) trained both Dodging and Fighting a fair amount in the early game after getting the spells in the starting book online. I had dodging/fighting/conjuration all training until I found another book, and got dodging/fighting up to about level 8-10 before switching back to dedicated magic training. I had the impression that it made a big difference in survivability, especially given the great survival tools in the Wz starting book. However, once you do get spells that you want to cast but can't yet cast, you should train single skills until you get those spells castable -- being over-generalized can be just as fatal or more fatal than having insufficient defenses.

Don't use Fireball for cold immune targets. Use Throw Icicle and summons for now, Poison Arrow eventually.
