YAVP: NaNe of Oka-->Kiku-->Ash

I wanted to give Webtiles a shot so that my game was "official" so I decided I'd try a combo that I really liked in the past: Naga hybrid melee/spellcaster. My goal is to go with Okawaru until sometime past V:8 and then decide where to go from there. I've played Ash, Vehumet, Makhleb, Ely, Nemelex; thinking of trying something different. So far I have been AMAZINGLY lucky. I found a mace of protection and a Naga barding on D:2 and laughed in Oka's face when he gifted me a -3 naga barding "Qukhlal" {Str-3 Int+1, god gift}. Next gift was a lame morningstar, which was pitiful vs. a dire flail. Third gift was this awesome demon whip:

And then realized on the first Tele that I had a ring of cTele on already. :D Oka really was looking out for me this time!

Last time I mentioned this someone said it is extremely rare to get demon whips from Oka... strange, but the several Nagas I have run this way always get one eventually.

As you can see I got fantastic drops for only clearing out Lair. Scroll of acquirement (gold), amulet of resist mutation, helmet of intelligence, cloak of darkness +2, Ring of protection +6? Yes, please!

My skills are kinda all over the place... to be honest, I really don't have a clue on how to play melee in the early game. I've tried to keep a pip on Stealth most of the game and it has been a LIFESAVER. Walking past three eight-headed hydras in a row was a boon. My spellcasting is minimal to support the spells I've picked up so far; I'm thinking I should boost Necromancy at some point to help with Vampiric Draining's output. I'm disappointed that I can't use undead minions with Oka... I thought from the wiki when it said he doesn't care that "nonliving" allies die that it would include the undead. So other than taking it very slowly and carefully, anyone care to give Naga melee tips? I was going to get Shields to 9 and grab a large shield to help with my defenses.

If only I wasn't such a weakling with Str 10... Oka just gave me:

That and the whip give me almost full elemental coverage: rF+++ and rC++

The Treasure Trove I found on D:11 wanted two potions of cure mutation. I found that exact number -- two potions! -- in a shop in Orc for ~2000 gold. I eagerly brought them to the trove to find within it held...

Nothing useful. A couple plate armours and random mixed junk. Blech!

But I can't complain. A crimson imp near an early Hell entrance had a demon whip of electrocution, which I now have enchanted to (+5, +4).

Been playing predominantly melee, a first for me, with Poisonous Cloud and IMB just picked up since I had the slots. I'm thinking of either sticking with Okawaru or (more likely) trying out a "new to me" God like Kiku for the end and post-endgame.

I'm about ready to try Tomb and then Pan. I haven't found any of the big spells except for Shatter, so I'm quite melee-focused now. Unfortunately, I have very little experience for how to play melee. I know how to deal with Pan lords when I can blast them and their entourage with Fire/Ice Storm... but with a mace? Not sure. How do you deal with a room full of high-level demons that can torment and hellfire you? Carefully, in a hallway, one at a time if possible? Any tips are appreciated.

OK, I've decided that I am unimpressed by Kikublarghablargh. Probably because I'm a not a pro, but torment protection seems unimpressive and I am failing at Tomb... I can fight maybe one greater mummy at a time with my holy great mace before having to flee and heal. Though maybe that's just how melee Tomb is...

How does anyone get by without Necromutation in the extended game? I'm probably going to switch to Ash, an old favorite of mine.

When I did my melee run through the Tomb, I had three levels of negative energy resistance (but not Kiku). To my knowledge, having three levels of rN+ will mesh well with Kiku's torment protection. A holy weapon will serve you well there, but I still had to take on mummies one by one for the most part. I'd try to engage one and lure it back. It was very slow, and things got quite hectic on the last floor, but I think just taking it very slowly should do well. I used corners to try to lure mummy priests and greater mummies around corner. If you can get into melee range and beat them down as fast as possible, you have to worry less about their minions. Mass abjuration helped me out quite a bit as well.

Also, having a few cheap minions might be good. I don't know if this is optimal at all, but on my melee-focused run, I collected every near-dangerous weapon I could find (with a preference for Holy Wrath), and used the relatively cheap Tukima's Dance for back-up. Beat on a mummy until it's near dead, then let the ally get the final blow and the death curse isn't a problem.

Actually I did get the Necronomicon, but with 0 Transmutations Necromutation wasn't exactly castable. After clearing about 3/4ths of the Tomb I got it working and promptly abandoned Kiku, sitting out his wrath in the temple. It was ridiculously easy: I made a macro to "Cast Necromutation and rest" that I would spam and then a force_more if he sent monsters. So it was simply a matter of spamming the macro repeatedly until it made me stop to clean up, rinse, repeat.

Amusing that twice he sent Kraken corpses that could not me animated on land. :D

Anyway, I finished Tomb and am now at ***** with Ash and have Tornado and Fire Storm working. Found the demonic rune and just took care of Cerebov with Chain Lightning and OOD. I still don't get how melee players do it... but perhaps playing a MiFi and putting EVERYTHING into Fighting/Weapons/Armour makes a difference? Or is it special Invocations from Trog/TSO/the like?

Cerebov, like most big single threats, can be antimagicked, and you can haste (even as a Troggist). If you are with Okawaru and have no antimagic, I'd guess that cTele out as needed, or ninja the rune, or use a ranged weapon with Finesse. With TSO you have hasted angels, etc. I actually didn't find Trog's Brothers very useful in Pandemonium, doe to getting killed quickly - perhaps they're good on bosses once the boss is alone.

It's not for rTorment but for rMummyDeathCurse that Kiku is awesome in Tomb. Not useful if you can't genocide mummies fast enough for that to matter. Either Conj or Summ would be required to make the most of Kiku in Tomb but Trog->Kiku with lots of rare consumables (or the fog-spam unrandart cloak) could work too. But yeah, melee Tomb is about bringing 10+ rations as you're going to be sitting there resting a long time. Silence can help, but you're still going to be resting a long time.

Mind, where Kiku is really awesome is Dis (with Simulacra). With enough speed (controlled teleports) and Str, he is thus really awesome in the rest of the Hells too.

Kraken corpses can still be used with Twisted Res, or with good old Sub.Blood.

Melee in extended ought to have haste up and preferably phase shift + cBlink too. Against Pan bosses, I consider abjuration just about essential if I'm not an extreme Conj nuker. Borg is also very useful for melee if your religion allows it.

Being good at melee is 90% being good at positioning and that is very hard. Get better at it and you will see why melee is super good.
