Muhahaha's Ogres In Progress

Alright. I took some time off from crawl after my first win awhile back. I got back into it recently, as it sounds like I'll be getting the hardware to do Lets Play's for Christmas, and this game would by cool to LP with so I might as well re-acclimate myself to it.

Anyway, about the character. Although they ain't the best race around, Ogres are by far my favorite. This one makes great use of his race's two greatest tools; oversize blunt objects for smacking people with, and oversize blunt objects for throwing. At this point in the game his squishyness is generally offset by his massive HP pool, but I know that can't last forever, and his lack of resistances will likely come into play rather soon. I'm hoping I can find some sort of dragon armor soonish, and might turn on my armor skill preemptively in the near future. I've found a shield, so I could go that route if I want to stick with a one handed blunt. I guess dodging is also an option.

As for my God, I took Trog for the ammo delivery, chance of branded giant spiked clubs, and good panic buttons. If I last long enough I will likely change to TSO, I have a invocations manual stashed away should I live long enough to need it. With the WIki down I can't be quite sure what Trog's punishments are, and what if anything I will need to survive them. If I try this build again I might go Oka; I haven't had to use Trog's panic buttons all that often, and the ability to get usable armor may offset the need to blow Exp on Invocations.

I'm in the Spider Nest for the first time with any character ever, but the path is blocked by every bodies favorite spell-casting statue. I'm torn between trying to pelt her to death, running up and 'zerking, and just going to the store in Orc to buy a wand of digging and skip her. I guess Trog Summons might help. I'm not exactly sure what the bottom of this branch contains, do you think my character is ready to shoot for the Rune here? Or should I just clear 1-4 and get the hell out of dodge? Is anything in this branch weak to silver? If so I should grab some special javalins I have stashed away.

Trog's wrath is mostly about surprise parties with angry badass melee dudes. If you can stand up to berserk stone giants and the like, you'll be fine. Otherwise uh... hope you can blink + teleport/run fast.

You might be able to take out Roxanne with a couple of Brothers in Arms, but you have poor defenses, so some bad luck with her spell selection could result in your death. And for what? You don't need the rune now. Go do the Vaults instead, then the main dungeon down to 27. After that, you should have no problems with Roxanne.

ABANDONMENT: 50 penance RETRIBUTION: 50% summoning abjurable, but berserking hostiles from (iron troll, deep troll, rock troll, troll, black bear, grizzly bear, stone giant, hill giant, ogre, two-headed ogre); 33% weakening effect (decay, STR loss, paralysis, slowing); 16% fire miscast.

In my ogre win I did a similar Trog to TSO switch. I wouldn't recommend trying it unless you have good protection (dragon armour and some armour skill); berserk stone giants are serious business.

My strategy for the wrath was to get some FR, plenty of permafood, a ring of sustenance, and an amulet of faith, and then find a comfy cul-de-sac and abandon trog and wait in the dead end. I don't know if it's still the case (I tried it in 0.9) but if you wait in the cul-de-sac it seems Trog only summons 1 or 2 monsters for you to deal with, which you can hopefully bash to death with your GSC before they kill you. Trog doesn't seem to like to summon anything if he can't put a monster next to you at all, so don't try hiding behind a goblin or something - you want to get the wrath over with, IMO.

Some other advice on the character: don't use a shield, and don't train dodging - your size penalty means your EV will never get anywhere. I didn't find throwing skill to be that useful, although I confess I have no idea how it affects damage. I've never tried the thing where you paralyze big bad demons with needles, could be fun. Instead, I focused on armour skill, spellcasting (don't train it with Trog!), and charms - swiftness, summon butterflies, flight, portal projectile, blink etc all can be extremely useful and it's not too tough to get them castable even in GDA.

Thanks for the advice. I'll skip spider for now. I figured 4 levels of bugs would be some(Relatively) easy EXP before I had to deal with Yaktaurs in the vaults, but I guess I am more likely to find my dragon armor in the vaults.

-Edit: Silly me, I just found a route around Roxane that I missed. Met a spider that confused me through my resistance, nasty. Think I'll just clear as much of Spider 1 as I can and go to the vaults.

Long story short, I made YASD.

The RNG was being a bitch. I test wielded an artifact Glaive just to see what it was; it was distortion. The glow from unweilding gave me a -mp mutation(Could have been much worse). Then I found a Bazzar. It contained 3 shops. Two of them were armor shops, but NO DRAGON ARMOR! The third was a weapon shop with nothing better than a giant club of impalement. I usually like to at least clear the Vault Guardians by the stairs on Vault 8 by luring them up to dispatch in groups for the EXP, but I couldn't do that because Margery and Mara were haunting floor 7 and I was in no position to deal with either of them. I got frustrated, and I make stupid mistakes when I get frustrated.

I proceeded to visit a large Vault Full of nasties on Vaults 5 that I had earlier made the smart decision to skip as it was too dangerous. I couldn't even fight my way through the front door before an Iron Troll found me, and I decided to go 'zerk. (I should have just run, or at least popped a more flexible panic button). The damn troll and his buddies managed to kill me before the rage even ended.

Still. I'm not that sad. I know I'm getting close to winning with an Ogre. I just need to keep smart and get a *bit* more help from the RNG is all, right? I might roll Scald and Worship Oka next. It might be tougher to get off the ground, but the ability to put brands on my club is just too good to pass up. Any advice on what order to train my skills if I go that route? It will be a bit more complicated than what I did with my last character, who could have likely won with just 4-5 well trained skills.

Don't overestimate RNG.

When you have a look at games of good players (e.g. look at morgue files of top players ranked by total score) you'll find out that they are able to win without great equipment. They get the orb with rF+ in Zot while unexperienced players die with rF+++. Knowing your strength and the danger of your foes is more important than good equipment.

You overtrained M&F and Fighting (and Armour). While your ogre would never be exceptional at Dodging, it would still have benefited from higher EV. Also, it looks like you put all of your stat increases into Str. If you never planned to cast spells with this character, you would have been better off putting them into Dex (for higher EV).

Thanks for the post mortem. How high your skills should go before turning them off is something I have a hard time with. I never dreamed that you could have too much fighting.

And Margery has Dragon Armor? Doh.

It's not that you can have too much Fighting, but rather that the same XP spent going from 20 to 25 Fighting would get you many, many levels in other lower-level skills. The marginal increases in HP (about 15 at your level) and damage are outweighed by going from 10 EV to 16 EV, plus getting Traps & Doors to, say, 10 or 11.

The same goes for your weapon once you've reached minimum delay. A giant spiked club reaches min. delay at 22 Maces & Flails. You'd only want to go from 22 to 27 once you've leveled everything else you want.

Getting fighting to 27 early on an ogre is completely reasonable. My OgAE had 27 fighting on d:20. However I didn't have 13 levels of throwing or 5.4 levels of armour (in a robe???) and I stopped at 22 maces.

Also traps skill doesn't actually help you kill enemies.

Yeah. Is there a spreadsheet with the minimum delay numbers? I see you guys rave about it on half these CIP/YASD topics, but the level where you should stop training the skill doesn't seem to be mentioned on a weapon's wiki page or knowledge bot entry.

Also, I had just started training armor rather recently. I figured I was bound to find some dragon armor in the Vaults, and decided to get a bit of a head-start. I was planning on pumping T&D Over the lair branches.

Working on getting another Ogre off the Ground. I'll keep you posted if one clears the lair. (Scalds and Stalkers mostly. I'm sure they will be a bit more flexible when they get off the ground with Oka... but boy is it hard to get them going. Its a pain deciding on the order in which to train your skills when you have so many....)

Yes, that's an important question for ogres/trolls: when will they find/get dragon armour?

Training skills that don't do anything for you right now is almost always a bad idea. This includes training armour in a robe.

Alright. I got another Ogre going... sort of. Usually I don't feel a character is worthy to bug you guys about until it clears the lair, but I want to get your advice early here so I don't drastically screw up his skills before it is too late.

Started as a Stalker this time for the Distill + Evoporate combo. Between Ogre Metabolism and the need to Distill corpses Oka hasn't been getting many sacrifices, so divine progress has been slow. Found the book of wizardry. Will likely pump conjurations and/or charms if I find a book with a low enough level spell in those schools to learn. Haste and Lightning Bolt are Fun Spells. If I don't find some conjurations soon I might start pumping throwing so Oka will give me rocks and javelins to cast instead. I hope I find a wand of cold or fire before I start meeting Hydras; Fireball just doesn't carry enough juice to clean all those bastards out of the lair. Guess I could likely melee a 4-5 headed one if I had to.

After beating all my Christmas games I finally got another Ogre going. This one has found a great weapon, but is wants some resistances badly. Hopefully I'll find some jewelry and get some better armor gifted soon.

Am I doing okay with my skills? How high should I crank my armor before I go back to training fighting and clubbing? I might also do invocations for a bit longer so I can reduce the fail rate of Oka's second power below 10%. Since this character has armor, I should just crank strength from here on out, right?

You should be training nothing but Maces & Flails until your GSC reaches minimum delay. (22, or 17 if you're ok using Heroism to bring you up to 22). After that I'd train Invocations until Finesse is at 5% fail rate or better.

Where did you get that bit about armor? You will naturally gain strength every 3 levels anyway. That will take you to 27, which is enough to let you wear any armor you can without penalty. Since you're not following Trog, you'll eventually want some spells, and in that case you'll want to put your stat increases into intelligence.

Body armor applies extra penalties if your strength isn't at least 3 times the armor's EV penalty. If you have less than that, the game will tell you that your low strength makes using this armor difficult. Having more than that doesn't do anything special.

Also, when should I aim for spells and what spells should I aim for? No haste yet, but I found both controlled blink and tornado in shops so far. Is it realistic to cast lvl 7 in armor?

Tornado is level 9, not 7.

It's realistic to cast them both in FDA, but not until late in the game. Ideally you'd go haste first, then cblink. I wouldn't bother with tornado unless you do extended as the XP cost in air will not be worth it until you're swimming in XP.

Still no sign of haste. And your right. I misread; conjure ball lightning is right next to Tornado in the book of sky, I got the spells and levels mixed up :) Silly me.

Also. I just found a huge 'S' shaped vault that takes up much of the floor it is on. There was a way out of depth Gold Dragon near the end. Is anybody familiar with this vault? If I lure the Gold Dragon away will it be safe to waltz in and loot the place? I haven't found a wand of digging yet, so I can't do anything sneaky with that to get inside.

Thanks. I killed the dragon by leading it (and its friends) to a choke and a corner. Killed the ogre and troll before the Golden Dragon came into sight, and then waited a few turns. He didn't show, so I went around the corner to check and found myself face to face with it. In the heat of the moment I quaffed resistance instead of changing rings, and popped heroism for good measure. It went down without any issue.

...But your vault still got me. I must have disturbed some of the OOD monsters earlier, because I found a Shadow Dragon and a Stone Giant halfway down. Either the corner or my own stupid inattention prevented me from noticing them until I was like three tiles away. I read Tele, Quaffed another resistance, and then made the idiotic decision to try and melee the dragon while I waited for the Tele to kick in instead of just running. YAFSD

Its a fun vault though. Perhaps this isn't the place for critique, but I would recommend adding statues or off colored floors as a warning. I was auto exploring and didn't actually notice I was in a vault until I saw the Golden Dragon and checked the mini-map. The slightly OOD monsters seemed a bit off in retrospect, but they were not enough to set off alarm bells.

Anyway. Thanks everyone for the tips. I know I have an Ogre win in me, I just need to be perfect and avoid stupididly lethal screw ups. That said I'll likely take a break from obsessing over the big guys for awhile. After a bit of shipping and customer service hell, I've finally gotten my new Microphone, and am ready to try some crawl LPs. It would be boring if I ran the same race over, and over, and over again.
