YASD - HEHu of Okawaru -> TSO
Nooooooooooooooooo! This was so close to being my first win, and a big one at that.
After a month of solidly playing this ridiculous and wonderful game, this was my first character to get three runes. When I got the third, I thought I'd carry on going and escape when the going got tough, but that never really happened so I plowed on. My strategy was mostly archery for most of the game, converting to Long Blades later on, and adding Air Magic for support from Deflect Missiles, Haste, Flight, Silence and in the endgame Tornado. Okawaru provided awesome equipment and powers, then TSO helped with demons, invisible stuff, rN. Should also have used his shield more, but kept forgetting. Seemed to work very well - the only times I came close to death were rank overconfidence on my part, and most of the game I felt very safe. I found this build way easier than the Vampire conjurer/IE/enchanter builds I'd been trying up until then. The sticky bits were:
1) I didn't look up Nikola when I met him, and he seemed easy right up until he used chain lighting on me.
2) I met the ghost of my first try at this character while surrounded on Spider 5, and wasn't cautious enough.
3) Okawaru's wrath came at very bad times - like when I had cast Silence and was already in slightly stretching melee. In hindsight, I should have taken things slower during the wrath period.
4) The actual death. I had just breezed through Tartarus, and I foolishly looked up Dis on the wiki and was told it would be easier. I charged into melee with Dispater, surrounded as usual my Tornado (to keep away and kill any support), Hasted, Silence around me, teleportation wand at the ready. Throughout our little fight, he had rather less health than me, so I carried on hitting him. When I got down to about 20% HP (which is rather too late), I used my wand of teleportation and started to run for it. The teleport took me exactly two squares - straight back to Dis and his pet Hellion. I decided I wouldn't have time to teleport again, so I slashed at him a few times, but to no avail.
A few things I'd be interested to hear thoughts on:
1) Any obvious skills which would go well in this build? I'd kind of run out of things to train by the end.
2) Is there any way I could have killed Cerebov? I buffed myself up fully, and he wasn't doing too much damage in melee, but I was doing even less. I had to TP away then come back and just run past him.
3) Similarly with Ziggurat, mummy levels - any way to get past them? They are what made me run away - the death curses really started to pile up and an unlucky run of them would have killed me.
4) What would you have done with stats? I put points into a mixture of all three in a rather unplanned way (not least because the build wasn't that planned).

After a month of solidly playing this ridiculous and wonderful game, this was my first character to get three runes. When I got the third, I thought I'd carry on going and escape when the going got tough, but that never really happened so I plowed on. My strategy was mostly archery for most of the game, converting to Long Blades later on, and adding Air Magic for support from Deflect Missiles, Haste, Flight, Silence and in the endgame Tornado. Okawaru provided awesome equipment and powers, then TSO helped with demons, invisible stuff, rN. Should also have used his shield more, but kept forgetting. Seemed to work very well - the only times I came close to death were rank overconfidence on my part, and most of the game I felt very safe. I found this build way easier than the Vampire conjurer/IE/enchanter builds I'd been trying up until then. The sticky bits were:
1) I didn't look up Nikola when I met him, and he seemed easy right up until he used chain lighting on me.
2) I met the ghost of my first try at this character while surrounded on Spider 5, and wasn't cautious enough.
3) Okawaru's wrath came at very bad times - like when I had cast Silence and was already in slightly stretching melee. In hindsight, I should have taken things slower during the wrath period.
4) The actual death. I had just breezed through Tartarus, and I foolishly looked up Dis on the wiki and was told it would be easier. I charged into melee with Dispater, surrounded as usual my Tornado (to keep away and kill any support), Hasted, Silence around me, teleportation wand at the ready. Throughout our little fight, he had rather less health than me, so I carried on hitting him. When I got down to about 20% HP (which is rather too late), I used my wand of teleportation and started to run for it. The teleport took me exactly two squares - straight back to Dis and his pet Hellion. I decided I wouldn't have time to teleport again, so I slashed at him a few times, but to no avail.
A few things I'd be interested to hear thoughts on:
1) Any obvious skills which would go well in this build? I'd kind of run out of things to train by the end.
2) Is there any way I could have killed Cerebov? I buffed myself up fully, and he wasn't doing too much damage in melee, but I was doing even less. I had to TP away then come back and just run past him.
3) Similarly with Ziggurat, mummy levels - any way to get past them? They are what made me run away - the death curses really started to pile up and an unlucky run of them would have killed me.
4) What would you have done with stats? I put points into a mixture of all three in a rather unplanned way (not least because the build wasn't that planned).
